So far, the only real artist I've seen use AI art in an ethical or, at least debatably, so is a NSFW artist who's has decades' worth of experience creating and thousands of art pieces to refine his style that is easily recognizable as his. Recently, he started experimenting with AI art by using only his art to feed a bot, which he then uses to essentially skip the rough draft process to then edit the generated image and to what he wants to the final product to look like. He has only used this process for short, personal projects and hasn't used for anything that involves a commission or their larger long runing projects. His stated main reason for doing this is that he often has many ideas for small projects and prompts that he doesn't have the time for, so he uses the AI and his already developed art skills to pump out this short idea that would typically be lost to much larger more important projects. I personally see this as the exemption that proves the rule. The one ethical use is from someone who is already highly skilled but doesn't have the time for every stray idea that comes his way no matter how much they want to make. So, they used their own art and developed talent to adjust and edit the half-baked AI image.

Which is why I believe AI should be kept Open Source and should be kept as public property that can't be monetized so companies don't use it to replace actual people. One proponent I would add it's to put a watermark in the metadata that can tag it as AI, so that future updates and "perfected" AI don't replace actual art

This essentially the idea I had for game companies on games that have tons of characters (gacha games or large open world games). Train the AI on the lead artist's style and have it make NPCs/low rarity characters, then have other artists edit whatever is output. This gives the lead artist time to design characters that are actually important.

At least that way, the artists are still the ones who create the art, but they use AI content as a way to come up with those creative concepts quicker.
