What if our innate spirituality was the antidote to the escalating rates of mental health issues in the world? Dr. Lisa Miller, a Columbia University professor, studies the profound interplay between spirituality and mental health. She argues that our modern obsession with achievement has led to neglect of our spiritual side, contributing to increased depression and despair. In contrast, "awakened awareness," a state where we are receptive to life's signals and guidance, can serve as a neuroprotective mechanism against such issues. Emphasizing the universality of spirituality, irrespective of religiosity, she suggests altruistic acts as a means to strengthen our spiritual core. Such acts, according to her, could ignite a journey of recovery and holistic wellness.

My mother always taught me to be nice to everyone around, look at them and smile, greet them with warmth, help the elderly even if they don’t ask, and offer and share with people around you… I did not realise how it has become an involuntary trait in me, and its probably what has kept me so sane and fulfilled. Even on rainy days, it always feels like i will get through it, and even those days don’t stop me from smiling at strangers & caring for the people around me. Thanks for the video ! Really made sense

As an atheist, I've found spirituality. Not in the form of a "higher magical thing", but in a combination of these few things: - Meditation, to better control my emotional and thought patterns. Learning how to suspend overthinking. Self-reflection and questioning my notions, to find better suited ones for ongoing situations. - Connect, to others in a meaningful way, pursue hobbies and interests that build a community around you. Find what you couldn't find within. What a "higher magical thing", as the ambiguous idea that "the universe" does something magical for me (like the Secret), did not do for me as a skeptic. I found a way in the deeper purpose, and found pride in a good willed narrative, because it can drive me through hard times. I know there might be a few skeptics out there like me, so I share this in hopes that it reaches them. We do not need to -suspend- our critical thinking, we just need to understand why/how these things work, and use them in a way that better align to our beliefs.

I explored atheism once, I still enjoy some content from some KZbinrs. I also identified as agnostic. What I've come to learn is that by trying to escape Religion, all we do is create a religion of our own. Religion is about pursuing our higher spiritual self...religiously. Realizing this, I started to explore religion again with an open mind. It is clear that ancient people had less distractions and more time to figure out some things about this place. I have come to respect that and learn from it. I agree with your sentiments wholeheartedly. It is in the doing that we find our answers, and this applies to everything. I think the tacit knowledge that comes through practice can never really be transferred to someone looking for spirituality in brick, mortar, pages, or gemstones.

@@warrensabastienanderson Atheists are not trying to "escape religion", that's a serious misunderstanding of what religion means. Even it might be a serious misunderstanding of what an atheist and a skeptic really can be. Excuse me. I appreciate you taking your time to write up a response, and understand the point. But religion has no monopoly and ownership over good ideas, nor it has a leg up based on how long it's been around. Everything religion offers, we can separate from myth and superstition.

As much as I don't particularly feel the need to call out some people who may have abused their bodies to the point of exhaustion, I do, in some way, understand where they're coming from. Religion and spirituality are two completely separate things. Most if not all religions are mind-based dogmas, not spiritual practices. Most spiritual practices do not have anything to do with religion, but focus on a shared higher power that transcends the logical/psychological mind. If you read the Power of Now from Eckhart Tolle you will see he is not preaching any religion. He doesn't even like the term "god" because it is so often misused to conjure up the image of a man in the sky. I don't know of any organized religions that are spiritual, other than perhaps some original forms of Taoism and Buddhism.

I like how more of this topic is being talked about. Our spiritual essence in creation is not religious. The spirit has exisisted long before any religion took control of the mind, body, and spirit. Its amazing when you realize that it doesn't matter what you believe, it doesnt negate the spiritual essence inside you, if only it just wants to be acknowledged for its existence and help its given you by becoming a part of you during development. Without acknowledging it, you're less aware.

You may have considered these things and I really hope they don't trigger any further existential dread if you haven't but I think they are worth taking a reasonable amount of time to introspect on if you haven't. I think you have a loss of purpose not spirituality (which is just one means to a purpose, the lady in this video is terrible at getting this point across). I'm going to use the word purpose a lot but try not to conflate it with goal. The big distinction : a goal is an ending/result; purpose goes on forever and is proven through goals. 1) Do you need to be happy to have purpose? 2) Do you feel happier when you have purpose? It seems to me you had what you feel like was your purpose in life taken away from you. That really sucks. I've found these questions when introspected upon help one understand that they can be sad and in a shitty situation and still work towards purpose; through that purpose then happiness grows. 3) If you don't have a purpose anymore then what do you want your achievable purpose to be? 4) Don't do this one first. It will make it more challenging to answer the others as they will be corrupted by goals rather then proper self reflection. What goals can you set that work towards your purpose? #3 is a difficult question for some people. If you struggle with it I would suggest looking to your passions. Passion combined with purpose is how greatness is achieved (I'm sure as a business owner you know that). So what better place to find a purpose then through your passions. While you don't have to make those passions you can turn into work it seem to me likely better if you can (as we do spend ~30% of our waking life there); if not then you just need to make sure you don't let work impede the time spent working on what you think matters (purpose). Finally if you ever feel that itch again just go through the process again. You might be at the top of the field in something you once loved and get the same existential dread creeping in. Same questions will give you new purpose and direction once meditated.

Medical trauma pushed me into an extreme existential crisis. I left my corporate career and lost my network of friends from hobbies, divorced, relocated to a new state. After a decade of crisis, I started making art and sending it or giving it to people. I figure it's the best I can do in these circumstances, and it's leading me to my true north, all while showing me my painful parts that need integration and rest. The simple slow life is balm.

I agree wholeheartedly. I'd like to add that spiritual practices or rituals have historically taken place within a community, i.e. people sharing the experience with you. We have never in human history been so isolated from a sense of community, yet so tightly packed together. How many of your neighbours do you know? Practices and rituals serve to keep us grounded and aware, and serve as markers of our important life events like birth, graduation, marriage, and so on. Yes, individual practices and rituals are important too. But we humans are social animals. Many studies have shown that people who participate in regular social activities including all forms of worship, social clubs, charities, volunteer work, church involvement, public service, golf, etc., live longer, healthier lives than socially isolated people. Random Acts of Kindness - practice it as often as you can.

If you have a nervous break, you won't be any use to the Science community and they won't look into how you got framed and why you live in the street. I call it, when the scapegoat gets away. @@jJust_NO_ I don't think this person means forget all of your practical knowledge. Using your mind for practical purposes, like tieing your shoes, cooking a meal, or driving your car is not a problem. It is the psychological mind that is the problem, when your entire day is basically consumed by useless thoughts. At that point, your mind is using you, not you using your mind to learn and apply the learning. So to get out of your mind doesn't mean never using the mind. It means not being consumed by the mind, but rather using the mind when you need to for practical purposes.

This is so fascinating. I have a dear person in my life who has Asperger's and he is incredibly intelligent and a very logical thinker. One thing he has difficulty with is connecting to his spirituality. I'm just wondering how the difference in brain wiring has effected access to this 'docking' station we are all born with and how to connect with that for improved feelings of connectedness. There is a strong sense of misanthrope there that impedes feeling connected to humanity as a whole.

Because the core to any of these "solutions" is not to ask why you feel burned out, but instead put your salvation in some nebulous "helping others". While the Patch Adams approach does allow you to get outside of your head, it doesn't resolve (or even give you space to question) the why. To wit- nurses have some of the greatest burnout rates. They are quite vocal about the why (monetary interests always putting pressure to do more with less).

I know a lot of people who are depressed because of their religious beliefs. I just want to see people find community, be their authentic selves, and act with kindness. I just don’t think religion should be the primary way of finding those things anymore. I would love to hear thoughts on this

I have used spirituality for 20 years to help with my Bi-Polar disorder and mental health recovery. I have not had an episode in over 15 years, no major depression over 15 years, outside of some sad days, like when my car breaks down, dog died etc. I work a hybrid remote job and work at my own pace most of the time, no need to go "crazy" for work or feel ashamed of it, but urgency is needed for a job sometimes. I incorporate some of spirituality with my counselor, at home with my family, some with my church, from from meditation, etc.

Spirituality prevents depression because it is you lying to yourself to protect yourself from truth. It is just as unhealthy as embracing nihilistic viewpoints. The truth is that we're depressed because we're worked to the point of snapping. On top of that, we're obsessed with ourselves and can't handle when we don't live up to the lie we sell others.

Dr. Lisa Miller, a professor of psychology and education at Columbia University, explains in a TED Talk that spirituality is an essential component of mental health. She argues that as we have become more disconnected from our spiritual selves, there has been an increase in addiction, depression, and suicide rates. Achieving awareness, which is tactical thinking, and awakened awareness, which is our deeper purpose and direction in life, are both necessary for mental health. The awakened brain has three major networks: the frontotemporal, the bonding network, the attention network, and the parietal. Dr. Miller suggests that everyone is born with the neuro-docking station for awakened awareness, but we need to engage our awakened brain to get there. Altruism, or love for our neighbor, is the form of spiritual life that most correlates with a strong cortex. If we are feeling stuck or trapped in despair or depression, we should step out of our comfort zone and do something nice for someone else. The act of giving can help renew our sense of purpose and direction in life.

This is dangerous for mental health. Life is not a journey or a path. To some, that can be considered autistic thinking, a narrowing of the mind to paths and journeys (detaching from the larger scope of our life). Life is a space of possibilities, and in that space of possibilities, we have life priorities that work like buckets. Once your life is a purpose, a path, or journey, your life’s space of possibilities shrinks and narrows to wrap around them. Think about a car. A full tank of gas can gives you a radius of around 400+ miles all around you. You have a space of so many possibilities to where you can travel with that car. Once that car has a purpose, such as only going back and forth to a work location, has a path to travel on, or has a specific journey to stay on, then that space of possibilities disappears to a narrow focus, taking away your freedom. Though life is not a dead car, we do have a space of possibilities with life. In that space of possibilities, we have to (1) prevent our life from getting worse, (2) take care of life priorities that maintain our life and keep it from falling apart (keep it stable), (3) when we have space, time, and resources open up, we can add to our life and grow it, and (4) be vigilant at watching the problems others face in life so that we can change our lives so that we don't ruin our lives like others. Once we get our life priorities done, we have play time in our space of possibilities where we can enjoy experiences, develop hobbies, have fun, and do things with others, using a space of possibilities 😉😉 , that others minds have never... experienced... before... Ohhh-h-h-h YeaaaaAAAaaahhhh! 😋… Life is beautiful!

What does it mean to be spiritual, and what is spirituality? Is it to believe in fairy tales and use them to help us cope with stress, fears, and burnout? I think you are referring to non-conscious activities that we perform at an automatic level, but they are still defined by our neuron connections. This is the amount of data that we can deal with at an aware level, so we place them in the queue with our super-processing unit, and we get some answers... sometimes correct, sometimes not. But it depends on how we have trained our brains on different topics and subjects.

There's much that's important here culminating in loving others. Yet the stumbling block to that is lack of forgiveness, which can only be done by asking God to show us the way because our worldly minds see differences in the physical world, better and worse, good and evil, that are not there in the spiritual world. The solution doesn't show up in the cerebral cortex. We are all one. That takes metanoia.
