Even before this card was revealed, I was entertaining myself with Nicol Bolad tribal. The Eldest Reborn insured me to go there. I'm just glad this is a way better commander than the 7/7 original creature. I got the idea for Bolas at the same time I got the idea to try to tell stories through cards that feature most of the legendary creatures, particularly the gatewatch with their spark origin flippers. Seeing bolas get one too just made my idea worth trying. Thanks for the ideas.

Our playgroup is brewing a classical Elder Dragon Highlander with all 5 Elder Dragons core19. Would be nice if you could make a deck tech video for each of them. Just an idea :)

I like the concept and idea that bolas could be a "discard commander" but we already have that in the form of Nekusar the Mindrazer. I can accept other forms of discard like thought seize, and duress to try and capitalize on trying to get reanimation targets, but that's really it. Nekusar does a way better job punishing your opponents when you play wheels, and you already have cards like Liliana's caress in Nekusar already. the reanimation/permission/goodstuff deck would work better for bolas.

I like him, but...I'm more excited about Chromium. Thinking about doing a Cipher/unblockable kind of thing with some madness cards when I want to shift him over. He'll still have the Cipher spells on him, but become unblockable and hexproof, and when I discard those madness spells, boom, cast them and maybe toss in a few delirium spells too or spell mastery. Like manic scribe can eat people's decks every upkeep, or maybe that homunculus that reduces instant and sorcery costs when flipped. I have plans. All the plans.

I like it! Chromium is really unique, I like the idea of a massive dragon shapeshifting into a tiny 1/1 human

As much as I love the design and intend on picking up a foil regardless, I'm just not sure where this iteration of Bolas fits as far as Commander goes. His flip ability costing 7 mana is fine... But I feel it really didn't need the 'at sorcery speed' restriction. That would have been a cool trick to give him (dodging removal), since he's already a mythic and that much mana is generally impractical in other constructed formats. As a dedicated Grixis player, it's hard to justify him for the time being without a distinct theme when the others do things better. I was already planning a classic EDH deck with the original Bolas, where every card needs to be pre-modern. The only thing on him that stands out especially to me is that his PW side can reanimate other PW, an effect we've only seen come in more recently, which definitely lends him to a more fun build with the other Bolas walkers.. Definitely appreciate you taking a look at one of my favorite spoilers from M19. If I find a way to make him work, I'll let you know (but don't get your hopes up. It took me a year to find a way to make The Scarab God interesting that wasn't Zombie tribal or combo nonsense).

I think Bolas, Chromium and Arcades are the best of the bunch. Personally, Arcades makes me really happy I love the idea of a defender tribal deck 😂 Chromium is easily the most unique Elder Dragon. Expensive to cast but very hard to kill!

Nicol can be immensely strong When folks aren't making adorable little joke decks out of him. -- An Addendum Also, a lot of these cards featured here seem to be how a lot of folks tend to put together other Nicol Classic decks. And. Also. No impact late game? Being able to drop an opponent's entire hand seems pretty dang strong if you ask me. The annoying opponent who's shored up a ton of cards over time; Or keeping an opponent from having much of anything. Plus. He hits like a truck. 7 damage isn't nothing when it comes to commander damage. And sure. He doesn't have haste. But there are ways of getting him to do damage to someone the moment he hits board. I honestly feel the classic Bolas is mighty inferior to classic if I'm to be honest -- especially since as a Flip Planeswalker that requires a really hefty cost to even flip (much like the classic Bolas himself), he's still going to be prone to removal. It's just that usually with Classic, you can at least get an opponent to drop their hand before he's dealt with. If at all. |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| But I do know its your opinion and such~ It's just wrong

Differences of opinion are what make it a Society and not a dictatorship after all 😂 In super casual metas OG Bolas is fine, I'd agree with that but in a meta where people run removal, of any kind, you're going to have a hard time. I know in my current meta, and the other ones I've played in, OG Bolas would be long gone before I ever had a chance to wreck face with him. 😔

Not enough time to punch~? Why, that's why we have cards like Dragon Tempest and Warstorm Surge, as well as efforts to hand control our enemies beforehand anyhow~ And that's in addition to the usual Swiftfoot Boots and Lightning Greaves. Besides, don't most metas have at least one deck that runs removal? I'd imagine so. It's an integral part of the game I'd imagine. I really do feel as though people don't give Nicol Bolas nearly the amount of credit he's due, as with quite a few other commanders, and hearing him spoken of as just unequivocally bad is just heart breaking to be honest. Which also leads to a lot of folks tending not to really put a lot of thought or effort into building him as well, outside of just for flavor. And, honestly, I feel as though this video does a lot to spread the idea that it's better to not really try building Nicol at all. I feel as though a pretty decent deck tech for Nicol Bolas does exist (here --> kzbin.info/www/bejne/aYnTpGqljbB1eq8&) But, as long as Commanders aren't taken seriously, even if they're a little unorthodox, then the chances of seeing really fantastic decklists of those just go down, I feel. Which, again, is why I felt so disheartened hearing those things in this particular video, especially since I was expecting more of an uplifting atmosphere when it comes to Commanders and Brewing. Essentially like hearing a jeer when bringing a Nicol Bolas deck to a table. Differences of opinion are what make a society But presentation of said opinion is still something that's important in expressing meaningful and constructive conversation in which parties are urged to express and share their ideas rather than embarrassed into keeping ideas of their own quiet~
