War was very expensive, but is the only way some people made money. When people went on "campaign" ,as it was called, they travel with money to pay and buy necessities along the way. Knights had richly and expensive made armors and weapons. The winning side would strip the dead from all their possessions. It was the spoisl of war that could make a man at arms rich.

Sure, we humans today don't use axes, clubs, spears, etc. to kill. We use AR-15's and other sorts of guns, grenade launchers, drones, jet planes with guided bombs, and nuclear weapons.
