I remember one of these sitting on the lot for a long time in the small Ford dealer in the northern Wisconsin town that I lived in as a teen. My neighbor was friends with the owner of the dealer and said the dealer could not move the car and hated seeing it delivered to his dealership. My friends and I (14 or 15) at the time loved the looks.

The Mustang SVO set the standard that Ford would follow in their performance development. And with the same engine that was in the Thunderbird Turbo Coupe from 1988. The CJ5E EcoBoost we have now is direct predecessor to the 2.3 L TurboTime SVO sported. Absolutely adore the nose and hood.

Very cool car. I test drove one once back in the day. Impressive but I was a 5.0 Foxbody owner and decided to stick with the V8. The SVO could be modified to make some serious power. I saw a couple at the drag strip in the late 90's early 00's and they were running mid to high 12's. That was damn fast back then. I was running 14.5 in a mostly stock 5.0 LX back then for comparison.

I worked as New car salesman for Ford in 1983-84. I loved the SVO . I remember learning a the specs. I told the prospective buyer all about the engine it was a 4 Cyl, Fuel injected , Turbocharged, with what was called an Air to Air intercooled engine. Spoiler was a Dual Bi-planed Spoiler. I couldn't afford a new one but a few years later I came to own 3 of them 84, 85, and a 86 that was the nicest. I kept it as a show car. I did get to drive up in Talladega Grand Prix road course With the SVO owners club. It was a real thrill ! Sold it in 2004 with just 50k miles in showroom condition for 5 Grand😭

around the time the first F&F movie came out, i remember when turbo four cylinder OEM cars were the thing for a young man to get. and then you had to put on the "turbo timer". today it would be the "two step". and you'd duct your blowoff valve to big horn device so everyone could hear you throwing revs as you passed the V8 car show. funny how those OEM engines lasted after "fishtank aquarium" level parts got tossed on.

I had an '84 Mustang Turbo GT -- basically the same spec as an SVO but without an intercooler, thus only putting out 145HP. Like the SVO, it came with "TRX" wheels which required tires in metric rather than imperial size, which in turn substantially limited your tire options. Those got swapped out for standard 5.0 rims the first time I needed to replace the tires.
@MarkKempton2 жыл бұрын

SVO did not have TRX metric wheels. 16” with very low profile tires. Which in the day were equivalent to saying having 21-22” today. TRX wheels would NOT work on the substantial improved suspension with 4 wheel disc brakes, +wider suspension track. I owned two. 84 and 86. Plus a 85 GT (yes, with the factory Holly) at same time.

The Merkur XR4TI was a Mustang SVO in many ways. It's not quite a Foxbody, but close enough to be one. It does share the same powertrain as the Mustang SVO. But the Merkur had so many flaws in the design of the car. I have a friend who owns a 1989 Merkur XR4TI and he's put tons of work into the car. They are awesome cars and fun to drive. But it also is a rare car that nobody ever mentions. Not many people have heard of them either.
@skaldlouiscyphre24532 жыл бұрын
The Sierra/Merkur is a more sophisticated platform than the Fox platform (IRS, for starters). In Group A trim the Sierra was practically unbeatable until the R32 GT-R came along and broke the category a second time. Allegedly Ford used the IMSA Merkurs to test the Sierra Cosworth's engine before introducing it.

But it ran like a top, was great on gas, and would cruise right along on the interstate with the automatic overdrive transmission. Ford should bring back hatchbacks in the Mustang, which were pretty versatile and handy to have. You could haul some pretty big stuff in the hatch with the rear seat folded down.

This was a very interesting video. I use to own a 1984 2.3 Litre Turbo GT Mustang. It wasn’t a “SVO” Mustang but dang was it ever a blast to drive. I rebuilt the engine with a friend of mine & just basically refreshed it, honed it & all new seals obviously & a few mods & she really came to life. I even beat a few 80’s 5.0 Mustangs which goes to show you how quick they are because the 5.0 V8 didn’t make much more horse power than the 2.3 Litre Turbo & in some 5.0 Mustangs they had around the same hp as the 2.3 Litre Turbo. I loved when you’d stomp on the loud pedal a cool green light would flash saying “Turbo” which was located on the left side by the steering wheel on the dash. Also if someone could please answer this question i have… As i mentioned above that i use to own a 1984 2.3 Litre Turbo Mustang & i’ve always wondered what is the difference between the regular 2.3 Litre Turbo Mustang to a “SVO”? Obvious things are obviously the scoop hood,rims,double rear spoilers & they both have the same engine so is those items i mentioned on the “SVO” basically the only difference between the two?

Even though i had the GT i really liked the SVO. After the SVO run WHY didn't ford put the koni shocks, the better springs and four way disk breaks on the mustang gt . I have wondered to this day. I think one reason was there weren't many after market parts and people playing and modifying turbos back then. Even V8 stuff there wasn't a ton ( Kaufmann, BBK, Steeda and a few others) but not much for the SVO . I would like to pick one up, upgrade it, give it about 300hp+ and enjoy it. The one major problem is you said faster. Mine was a 1985 GT. Stock, not once did i get beat by an 85 or 86 SVO but i can see a 1984 svo beating the 1984 gt which was low on HP. They had to much lag and i was already gone. They pulled but high 14's low low 15's at best. My stock gt (with 3.27 gear manual) and air filter running 14.3-14-5 at Carlsbad back then. But the SVO would out handle many cars during that time short of the corvette and that was pulling 1.0g with the beefed z51 leaf springs and the 255 gatorbacks. I will for sure pick up a 1985 or 1986 svo. I think their value will for sure go up in the future.

Thanks, Brendon, great review and background of an often-overlooked, at least from me, Mustang. Wow, how those old V8's were strangled. My 12 Accord with a 3.5 V6 at 280hp vs my 92 Roadmaster 5.7 V8 at 180hp
@midnight3472 жыл бұрын
That v6 is dohc and has alot more rpm and tech involved and those 302s had 300 torque at like 3k rpm and not much less at 2k. There's where your difference is. You also didn't have to Rev it to 6-7k to get to that peak power number they had. There is more to it than peak. The v8s were obviously restricted that is why a decent heads cam intake on a fox will gain you well over 100 rwhp which is alot when it only had 200 or so give or take to the wheels stock.

The 1992 V8 makes less HP than my 1962 V8.

SVO's were truth on a road course! Special Vehicle Operations! And the last year SVO made 10 more hrprs than the GT but less twister pounds.

Every time he reviews a car and says it's lighter. I always laugh when he jumps in the driver's seat because I always think not anymore. 😊

That front clip and the dual spoilers look a lot like the Merkur.

Some of us would LIKE to forget the Fox Body Mustang. Was it a sporty looking little car? Sure. Did it look like a Mustang? No. I was so thrilled when in 1994 the Mustang started looking like a Mustang again. You can stick the badge on a fox body, but that doesn’t make it look like a Mustang.

That was same engine that The 1983 Ford Thunderbird Turbo Coupes had which that car set the modern standards for Ford then along with this Mustang, Taurus and Tempo, Probe.

My uncle had one. It was a 79 with the same motor.

I wonce saw a 2012 mustang with an SVO tribute body kit. It looked awesome

With modern turbos they'd kick major ass. Borg and Garrett have turbos that would make 400-600rwhp, and 400 to 450 ftlb on that size engine. Peak boost around 3000 rpm.

Since Ford brought back the 2.3L turbo aka ecoboost, these SVO fox body Stangs would be great candidates for a restomod! The new 2.3 would be such a beast in that car even if it is just a motor swap!

It would be great to see an Ecoboost Foxbody or Sierra.

The production numbers were juat under 10000. Not under 5000. Surprised to see such a nice one end up at an auction like that. Someone took care of that car and it's got some tweaks. It's lowered. It's got adjustable fuel pressure regulator, and silicone intercooler hoses. They so added a support for the upper biwing. At a Ford show, or higher end auction it would've gotten more, for sure.

four of these suddenly popped up in my FB market place feed...i hope someone can save 'em before someone tries an LS swap. I had a 1986 turbo t bird with an SVO front mount intercooler and still have my 1986 GT Mustang. If i only had room for four more cars....they'd be great for when the price of gas goes up again.

85.5 was rated at 205 hp and 86 was 200. They had better intakes and larger injectors and different computer.

I worked on the prototypes , there was not much excitement then. First mustang that handled, what about the 1965 GT350 or the Boss 302s?
