In a lot of ways 13-year-old Cameron Thompson is a normal teenage boy; obsessed with computer games, sporting the first hints of a moustache and a newfound interest in girls. However he is also a maths genius who is currently doing an Open University degree in applied mathematics and has Asperger's Syndrome, both of which create challenges in his life. Can Cameron balance the need to remain the genius he has always been, and therefore different, with the classic teenage longing to be accepted?

Not to mention he is unable to illustrate effectively from the problems he suffers from, so it's only better to wait for the right time as he improves and grows a little older.

He is a bit like my son ( who is also autistic) not having the ability to understand or recognize emotions. Art is very subjective, emotional, and not literal. My son is very literal, it's very hard for him to "imagine" unreal things. This young man is all literal and has a very structured thought pattern. Yeah! Hormones and autism DON"T mix! Well, that's the thing isn't it. When it comes to maths, I just know the answer. I completely understand this guy (whom I think is now 21 years old, I can't find his current progress online unfortunately.), it's frustrating trying to explain it to someone because, it's just there... In my head. It's hard to even explain the process of thought. Well, think of it like this... Can you tell me what neural pathways are used to lift your hand? Nope, but you know how to lift your hand. (Thus you can skip the explaining and just lift your hand) It's just fascinating.

I'm not sure I've ever seen a more wonderful and inspiring set of parents. They love without smothering. They advise without commanding. They support without judging. And to do all this with no blueprint for a son so gifted, and also so challenged, is something that really deserves the utmost praise! Also, honorable mention to the teacher as well. As someone who found himself stuffed in a similar program because of a physical disability, I can tell you firsthand that teachers like her are absolute unicorns. She's also one in a million.

And on top of being amazing parents to one brilliant child with his own challenges. They are wonderful parents to 3 children! Another one of which is also autistic. They put in such effort with their children. It's so amazing and admirable. I remeber once my biological parents were having the biggest fight in the living room. I hid in my room and just wailed crying. This was at like 13 as well. And my step dad came in and smacked me. He said, stop crying! And I stopped crying because I didn't want to be hit. I couldn't imagine having challenges like these children and having my parents to contend with.

+Dreaddy Bear It's most likely won't help him. Philosophy requires abstract thinking, and that is incapable of that. His brain is wired in logic, that why he is unable to understand art. He needs structures, and he needs to understand logically everything, for him to make sense out of it. But arts and socialization is mostly emotional and is difficult to understand it logically.... The human brain is limited in functions, and gifted peoples just get more points in certain areas, but less in the rest, so they are unbalanced.

This guy's brain is really incredible; that puzzle with the coins near the beginning of the video for example. I paused the video, thought about it for some time, got out a pen and paper, worked through the first 8 examples for smaller cases, came up with a conjecture, tried to prove it rigorously, before eventually coming up with a hand wavy justification that I understood for why it worked that. All in all, I think it took me about 20 minutes to get to an answer. Play the video again, and Cameron stumbles a couple of times, then manages to get to the correct answer just by working it through in his head. His brain must be working so fast for all of that to happen; it probably took him less than a minute, all without writing a single symbol. That's extraordinary, and I hope that people can appreciate that fact.

I think they are sort of giving him values that may give him anxiety when he grows up, his life is fragile, if he gets bullied, if his grades continue to decrease if he thinks he is failing his family or gonna become a hobo he'll probably freak out and slow down his progress and continue the cycle which is why his syndrome is actually quite negative the trade of being smart with numbers and logic but being blocked to express yourself when you need to. Humans are social he is social he needs to express himself so it can be quite damaging to a young teen.

Cameron's wonderful. He's exactly the kind of friend I wish I'd had in school. I wish someone would teach him that art is backed up by math. Art is an expression of math and when math catches up, we will all understand the importance (beyond beauty) of art. Math is the language of nature and art is the expression.

I find the simplest way of introducing children who are more focused on mathematics such as this case is to try and get them into engineering from a young age and slowly move into architecture, to show how mathematics and aesthetics can combine interact with one another. I generally start off by showing sculpture work by David C. Roy. He combines his background in aeronautical engineer working on jet engines with his wife's passion for art and design, to make kinetic wooden sculptures that can move in motion for hours at a time. Yes, there is beauty in nature but it can be difficult to show that beauty to someone Cameron who has a hard time understanding emotions what most people can see while observing nature and art. But with something like kinetic sculptures theirs the physical beauty is not only the engineering of the parts and how they correspond to one another but also in a mathematical sense, how each click of the gear equals one rotation of a wheel but depending on the rotation and force applied the way the sculpture can appear varies. Also, the beauty of seeing your mathematical theory put into a physical would most likely help him understand how art can appease others even if he doesn't truly understand it from another view.

I was saying the same thing in a different kind of way, but I came to the conclusion he just isnt ready for it yet maybe, that's something that one grows to understand and like, and I'm sure he will see within time, just like when his hormones kicked in, he started to like girls, when he is pondering things on more of a deeper level as age comes he may start to realize at least the value of art. I imagine one day he will be drawing complex mathematical shapes and it will suddenly come to him in a moment of realization of their beauty, but hey, who knows heh.

They don’t have that social filter. I have a nephew who has Aspergers and he thinks and achieves in similar ways to Cameron. When a young cousin of mine (who has severe mental and physical disabilities) got a trumpet for Christmas, he started to play it in front of everybody because he was so happy and proud. He wasn’t playing music, just making noises, but the whole big family was obviously very encouraging and positive. Except my nephew... Confused why everyone is praising what is obviously terrible, he ran up to the trumpet, stuck his fist in the horn, and screamed “That’s the most terrible music IVE EVER HEARD!!!!”

I was diagnosed twice. Its a harder diagnosis than people my collate however it helps people understand in a way what to say or do. Many of us have specific interest like me it is pure math- at 15 i had the opportunity to get an alevel in further maths. I like that we are getting an opportunity to be shown!

I really don't know what to say... this was a most inspiring story. I so admire the parents and his family. This young man is so brilliant on so many levels. He may think he is a strange one, but I feel he is very insightful and comprehends his condition and is fine with it. I think he is just a gem of a person and works hard at being a lovely young man. I hope he continues to work on his social skills because he is not a machine, he is a human being and needs balance. No one should tip him only towards academics. As a public high school teacher in the United States, I was impressed by the autism/Asperger support at his school. We have special education, but if the child is bright, they are on their own. Kudos to his family! in addition, I think a math degree from Cambridge would be much more prestigious than one from an extension university.

The reality is most children struggle with friendships never mind with a child who hasn't got the ability to follow social norms and fully understand their own and others emotions. Lots of adults are the same. My son is loving and kind, but his ASD means that he struggles in groups, he feels the need to take the lead especially in school as he is very black and white and can't understand others ideas especially if he thinks it's wrong. In these situations kids with ASD are filled with anxiety which results in a fight or flight response known as meltdowns which also means that other kids are also very aware that these can happen and avoid the children. While looking at a documentary can be adorable, the reality is heart breaking as a parent as it's not just a matter of being socially awkward.

@@nintendoant88 Also if he gets sick of learning in a way that isn't ideal for his mind, it's very possible he gets fed up of maths in some years time and wastes a real gift. The University prof. was spot on and called it, he needs to do fun thinking problems that actually make sense to Cam, and in a way he can explain (like the puzzle he was given in the office), rather than just doing mindless sums that he needs to try and explain why they are, when they just are to him because maths is a rule set ingrained into Cam's way of thinking I assume. He probably doesn't even need to work out some of the stuff he knows very well, it's probably almost hardwired into his logical thought processes, which makes trying to explain how you got there to an answer extremely frustrating, as we see Cam expressing in this video, and almost futile really when there's a much better way for him to learn that makes sense to him (which will make explaining it much easier and natural for him)! I have high hopes that with the uni prof looking out for him, he could achieve great things, and avoiding some of the possible educational pitfalls he faces as a smart young kid with ASD!

I'm gifted and autistic too, and this is too relatable. I panic over the smallest assignments which are related to ancient Greek (my biggest special interest and my greatest talent) I usually take one day to understand different concepts, so I'm used to moving fast. There are things though which I still need three or four days to fully get. Lately I've been panicking about the participles, because although my teacher sent me mails with the explanations, in different manners, it still took me too long to get. And I've had serious meltdowns because of this slow motion. Now though I'm progressing fast again, and I'm already two years ahead of my classmates in the curriculum. I don't know. I can say ancient Greek is my biggest gift and biggest curse... 💚💚
