The grunts have a really sad story, they lost two times! First they are forced to join a alien faction they don’t want, they are treated like garbage and when they take stand, they homeworld is destroyed, and not even that cause after a green demon appears killing a lot of your species and only after that the alien faction that took you by forced is defeated. Honestly the grunt have a pretty strong reason to join Atriox forces, basically they had nothing and atriox promised them secure, even a new homeworld

Great video! Continue to make more. I really liked the Flood book. Admittedly the parts adapting CE where they tried to put the gameplay into book form wasn’t very good (it was pretty silly how it would say stuff like Chief swapped his weapon. Chief fires his gun and once it reaches x amount of bullets he reloads. Then he finds a health pack). Everything else was phenomenal. I really liked the side stories how they gave you the Covenant’s perspective on events, the parts where we got to see both Keyes’s and Jenkin’s perspective on being infected by the Flood, and how it expanded upon what the UNSC were doing. For the Halo show they seriously should have just done a mini series that juggles the events of CE, the book, and Fireteam Raven (watch Halo Canon’s videos about the characters. They actually have an interesting back story. It’s just never communicated through the game since it’s a railshooter). You should talk about more stories that show the Covenant’s perspective. I like how Yayap knew that they were all screwed, and he fled off into the distance. His ending is bittersweet because he finally got to find piece, but he and everyone who knew died.
@Woodyisasexybeast2 жыл бұрын
I couldn’t agree more with your opinions regarding The Flood. The chief bits are so lazily written but the good parts, like Yayap and Zuka’s story are good enough that it’s worth the read. I absolutely love the scenes depicting Keyes and his struggle against being infected by the flood. It’s so tragic and very well written. I love that they adapted it in the CE terminals. I’m thinking I might cover a story about a grunt and an engineer who become best friends. It’s an excellent story too and a bit more developed than Yayaps. Plus it’s written by Joseph Staten.
@SneedRemembrancer2 жыл бұрын
Honestly my favourite parts where it going into solid detail and examples of the average elite field commander being awful at tactics and command and how the UNSC are able to overcome the covenant’s superior units and tech though good strategy.
@shreksnow19182 жыл бұрын
@Based Sneedclave I forgot about that. Yeah, the Covenant are like the Imperium from 40k where they’re so steeped in tradition, and a reverse engineering old technology that they don’t really innovate. That was a cool part.
@shreksnow19182 жыл бұрын
@Woodyisasexybeast I was going to suggest that you could make a video about the story where the Engineer and Grunt became friends, but forget to include it. Was that in Contact Harvest? I haven’t read the book yet, but I really need to. I have it on paperback just laying around, but kept putting it off. I agree that the fact they put that part from the book where Keyes gets infected as part of the Annavery terminals was really good. Sadly, most of the stuff in that remaster didn’t really work well. The Halo 3/Reach graphics were really pretty, but didn’t translate well. I honestly never thought about the thing you mentioned in your video about how untold numbers of Grunts would have suffocated during missions. That definitely makes their story more tragic. One thing I don’t like about the Grunt design (goes for all of them) is the fact that the inside of their mouth isn’t blue. Their insides should be the same color as their blood. That’s why our insides are red/pink. Jackals and Elites should have purple mouths because of this. As for Brutes their physical appearance and blood color was never consistent. Personally I chalk up the reason for Chief’s sections being badly written is because the author couldn’t really do that much with them. Sure there were a few cool minor details, but he wasn’t able to deviate too much from the book. The other sections were definitely really good. One of my favorite parts with Chief is how when he kills Zuka he does it so casually, and has literally no idea who he just took out. The part that mentioned how Hunters have bond brothers was really cool. Although, the emphasis on their back spikes and how Chief cut himself on them was dumb. I’m not sure if this is a plot hole or not, but in CE you set off the Autumn’s fusion reactors and make it blow up the Ring. This makes me wonder why they didn’t just set UNSC ships to self destruct and send them straight at a Covenant fleet after they take too much damage. Maybe the shields make this not work, but if that can destroy a Halo it would punch right through their shields. Your Black Team video was pretty good. It’s too bad that their interesting story ended in such a dumb way. Although, I’m not a fan of the Spartans falling in love since they’re basically adopted siblings. While none of them are biologically related, they all grew up together so it makes it really weird.
@Woodyisasexybeast2 жыл бұрын
It is in Contact Harvest. Which is by far one of the best Halo books, period. Joseph Staten is a superb writer. Don’t put it off anymore. Read it! It’s up there in my top Halo books for sure. Along with The Fall of Reach and Cryptum/Primordium/Silentium. I much prefer the original aesthetics in most areas but I’d be lying if I said I disliked the remaster. With it came the terminals, which I absolutely love. Plus we got some absolutely spectacular landscapes. I’m not crazy about the lighting or character models though. The covenant models, specifically. I’m not entirely certain regarding the idea of flinging self destructing ships into covenant forces. One obvious drawback to such a strategy is the costly nature of producing starships of that magnitude. The UNSC needed every ship they could get because their resources were so limited. I enjoy black teams story precisely because of how unusual it is. Viewing it from certain angles definitely does give some “sweet home Alabama” vibes. However, when a group that large is forced to cohabitate, romantic relationships are literally inevitable. To say that EVERY Spartan views the others as siblings seems ridiculous to me, which is why I think the story works.

You know what, there is a small chance yayap may have survived. Assuming he made it far away enough to not be vaporized by the explosion, and wasn't on the left piece that smashed into the other side of the ring, then he could survive even with no atmosphere, due to the methane tank and the exoskeleton of the grunts, and from that point on covenant ships were constantly patrolling the desikrated remains of halo, they even parked high charity next to it, so one of them could have picked him up while searching for surving foruner relics

In the book he's killed when Chief drops the elevator and rolls a grenade over the edge. Cortana even wonders what his deal was. All that and his death amounted to little more than a "huh, that was weird, anyways..." reaction from Cortana with Chief barely noticing.

Yayap could... Could... Still be alive. Both a silver elite and Johnson were within close proximity of the Pillar of Autumn when she went boom, and survive. This means there's a very unlikely chance Yayap blew up. Cortana made a quick scan, found no obvious lifeforms and made the educated guess that everyone was dead. However, not everything died from this, nor did Johnson or some lucky few on the ring's pieces. The problem is... They were stranded. So thus comes a lot of story for how they all got off, where then at the start of Halo 2, Johnson completely blows off the explanation for how he's there :)

@shreksnow19189 ай бұрын
A while ago I relistened to The Flood book and my opinion on the thing is mostly unchanged. The parts directly adapting CE weren’t very good due to a combination of Chief’s sections already being set in stone so the author couldn’t do much with them, and CE’s gameplay simply does not translate well into book form (Chie picks up a health pack, Chief swaps his weapon, he pulls out his gun and once he fires x amount of bullets he reloads). The side stories on the other hand were truly phenomenal. My two favorites are the ones with Yayap and Zuka, along with Keyes and Jenkins’s horrific experiences being infected by the Flood. If you haven’t already you should really do videos on the lives of Keyes and Jenkins and how both men had different experiences with Flood infection. Something really interesting I noticed on my second listening is the Covenant are noticeably less religious than they are in future media. A lot of the lore really fleshing out their society didn’t exist until 2 when they needed to give you a reason to play as an Elite. They don’t even call Spartans Demons yet. They just refer Chief as “that human with the special armor”. The Covenant also KNEW FOR A FACT that Halo was a weapon and the goal of CE prior to the Flood reveal is to gain control of the Ring to prevent the Covenant from using it against humanity. It wasn’t until 2 when they believed that activating the Array would turn them into gods.
@Woodyisasexybeast9 ай бұрын
I have shorts on both Jenkins and Keyes because I love their stories as well. I may one day do a long form video too. Something along the lines of “most horrific flood moments” or something. Definitely not the final title but I think you get the idea. Despite all of the additions to the lore, I still feel like The Flood holds up really well. There’s some weirdness here and there but all in all, it works out decently. For example, I think there’s mention of a hunters spine being severed or something? I forget what exactly was said but it doesn’t perfectly line up with what was established later. Easily passable and explained away but odd nonetheless. Either way, I do think it’s a good book thanks to the added bits. Keyes’ death is genuinely one of my favorite sequences in the entire series.
@shreksnow19189 ай бұрын
Now that you mention it I remember seeing those videos and liking them. If you ever do one that expands more on Keyes you might want to cover what happened during The Cole Protocol. I recently listened to that book and it was really good. I really liked how Truth had some Jackals trade with humans using modified plasma weapons designed for humans. Said weapons were tracking devices and by giving them to Insurrectionists they could destabilize parts of the UNSC. Too bad all the intelligence Truth showed in the books and 2 wasn’t present in 3. The parts where he’s mad at Regret for messing up his plans and seeing the hierarchs arguing plants seeds of doubt in the Arbiter were good. One of my favorite things about Cole Protocol was how they showed a different side of human society with very different political affiliations. Such a shame we don’t see more stuff with the Insurrectionists. Wasn’t a fan of a lot of the changes in CEA, but I did enjoy the terminals. By far the best is the one that adapts Keyes experience in The Flood book. I think that some of the contradictions with how Elites act in The Flood vs later lore be reconciled by having certain Elites be less religious than the others, but they out up a show because it benefits them socially. It would also make them more interesting if they had different views and weren’t all just slight variations of each other. I just now remembered one weird contradiction between the book and CE comes from the part where that one Covenant craft collects Keyes. In the book they killed everyone but Keyes, and in the game Keyes is accompanied with several marines when you rescue him. Cortana even says they captured the rest of the command crew in the second mission. I think if there was a remake or my schitzo version of a Halo show they could probably have them kill a few of them who fight back, and execute the traitor because the Elites would view her as dishonorable and untrustworthy for selling out her own people.
@shreksnow19189 ай бұрын
Now that you mention it I did see those videos and remember liking them. If you ever do one that expands more on Keyes it would probably be a good idea to cover his actions during The Cole Protocol. That was an interesting book. I really liked how it delved into a different side of humanity and how they viewed the UNSC. I also loved how Truth had Jackals trade altered plasma weapons that had secret trackers and by giving them to Insurrectionists they’d destabilize the UNSC. The parts where Truth is scolding Regret for messing up his plans and the Arbiter is deeply disturbed by the fact the hierarchs aren’t united. I personally wasn’t a big fan of a lot of the changes in CEA, but I really liked the terminals. The best is definitely the Keyes one where they reinacted that scene from the book. I think some of the changes to the lore like the Covenant being less religious and the Elites not having the same honor code could be hand waved by having some Elites be less concerned with the theology and mostly just out on a show because it benefits them socially. If they had different views on Forerunner tech and other things it would make them more interesting and less like slight variations of each other. Kind of like how there was that crazy Elite in Ghosts of Onyx who wanted to have the Flood overwhelm his ship and his underling killed him to save the crew. One contradiction that you can’t mesh is how in the book when they catch Keyes they kill everyone except him, but in the game Cortana says they captured the surviving command crew and you find Keyes with several marines. I think if there was a Dead Space/Resident Evil style remake of my schitzo ideal Halo show they could reconcile these two by having the Elites kill anyone who tries to fight back, and execute the traitor because they’d view her as dishonorable and untrustworthy for selling out her own people.

Not to break the story's flow, but 12:50 definitely didn't happen on my second playthrough. After learning there were hunters (from my first time playing), on the second I stormed in with a warthog and ran them both over - naturally pretty much every cargo container was completely flipped. The Silent Cartographer has lots of "cheeses" with warthogs, You can even skip the "closing door" checkpoint with the Golden elite if you enter the room with a warthog (you'll be fast enough to enter before the door closes) I can't confirm if this is still possible on the remastered version as I've only ever played the original Halo CE

I mean, it did though. This is ripped straight from the novelization of Halo CE and is 100% canon. It’s 100% still doable in MCC

Grunts are EASILY the best comic relief in video games. They get the best lines, theyre the only species Chief deadpans before he smokes them, and one of them fell in love with a Spartan.

It’s always amazed me how they manage to not only be excellent comic relief but they’re also incredibly tragic. Such an excellent duality

From a doylist and watsonian perspective, it doesn't make much sense to have your lowest-ranked, most likely to die unit be the one that requires such a resource investment as a custom atmosphere. At such a cost, it would be much more efficient to find some other shmucks to exploit that can breathe oxygen, like the drones that were already present

Not a bad vid, i would argue that the unsc wasn't attacking the pillar of autumn past their first raid to secure supplies and armor, and after taking everything they could, left it be. The covenant there only had to deal with flood before guilty spark brought sentinels to. And honestly i also thought Yayap had found a quite place to eat his rations, basically he died at peace with a full belly.

Despite the book practically being a strategy guide for the 1st Halo game. I thought what made the book great were the little things like this videos story, McKay and Major Silva capturing a base, poor pvt. Jenkins story and the decision McKay makes that possibly saved the galaxy.
