If there was anybody offended by this song I certainly didn't know any of them. We actually were offended by very little back then compared to now when everybody is looking for a reason to be offended. The song was #1 in America for 3 weeks.

This song absolutely is political. Burton Cummings is trying to soft sell it now after 50 years. They're talking about war, ghettos, racial strife, poverty. Burton lives in LA now so..... Canada was busy welcoming refugees from the draft in those years.

1970 -- for decades, most Americans didn't even know that this wasn't an American band. This was the height of Vietnam and the protests in the streets and on the campuses. For those who did know, it was like a gut-wrenching punch from your best friend and neighbor in the whole world. But whichever of those two groups you were in, you HAD to love the song. This was a HUGE hit in the United States. Got MASSIVE airplay on American radio for the next -- well, the next 5 decades, if you go to the classic rock stations right up to this very day. And nobody EVER spoke about the fact that it was a Canadian band whose original inspiration was an improvisational moment in a club up in Canada. And they were really talking about the female groupies they met in their recent American tour. And America itself was in some ways hating itself -- it was a time of tremendous critique -- of the war, of money before every other value, so it met our ears as something almost internal to us -- it feels like an American easily could have written this -- but of course, it was these Canadians, which makes more sense. Really powerful classic rock, way up there with the very best.

Randy Bachman says it was over a hard time they got from some idiotically hard right wing border guards in North Dakota that gave them an impossibly hard time crossing into the US for a tour because they were a rock band and had long hair. They even tried to force the band to sign documents saying they would be willing to fight for the US military. This was, of course, the time of the Vietnam war, so they just "NO!" turned around and came back home. It was a protest song against those sorts of people who loved the Vietnam war and were making everyone's life miserable. That is all. Burton Cummings has spun several different tales about the song but that is what Randy Bachman says.

@ToddSauve, so the other poster's comment is true. Also, the Democrat party, Lyndon Baines Johnson (D) was knee deep support for the war. The same as they were to allow Bush Jr with his war. Select a few to oppose in order to keep face and, in turn, push for more unwarranted wars.

This is the story Randy Bachman, the Guess Who's lead guitarist, tells about this song. The band was at the border going across to do a tour they had scheduled in the US around 1969-70. (They were going from either Saskatchewan or Manitoba into North Dakota. They played a tremendous number of gigs in Saskatchewan back in those days, and Burton Cummings now lives in Moose Jaw.) But the border guards/customs agents hated that they were a rock band and had long hair. So they made the experience an administrative nightmare for them. At length they even tried to have the band members sign a paper declaring they would volunteer for military duty if they crossed into the US. The Vietnam war was raging at that exact time. This infuriated the entire band so they said "Absolutely not!" cancelled their tour and returned to Canada. President Richard Nixon later invited them to the White House to sing a few songs, a year or two later, because they were such BIG rock stars. They sang "American Woman" as one of their songs. 🤣😂🙃☺ The song is only meant to highlight how the image of the American Statue of Liberty had been hijacked by the extreme right wing of the US political spectrum during the Vietnam war. I'm a Canadian in my mid-60s and I can say with authority that 99% of people in Canada _do not_ hate Americans! This is not meant to be an anti-American song. It was only ever meant to be a criticism of the far right wing mentality of some people in the US, and elsewhere, who seemed to love war and killing other people for no valid reason. I was only 10 or 12 years old when this song came out and I didn't have a clue what it was talking about! LOL! 🤔👍 Try the Guess Who's live version of "Running Back to Saskatoon" for much greater musical joy from this band. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eJrbgoCHe7KCj7M Or this version, which is the original live version from radio, that we all grew up with from 1972. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oHeoeomhiK2UgLc Or this killer version of "American Woman" they performed live in Winnipeg in 2004! kzbin.info/www/bejne/sGm2q5Jnn6yVnpo

The vietnam war era is *mostly* before my time (born in late 1966) but I always took the "american woman" to be the statue of liberty and a song against the US "throwing it's weight around" regarding its neighbors. I remember hearing people joke, not that long ago actually, that Canada was America's 51st state. I can imagine some Canadians just being a little low-level frustrated with America and her power, in all its forms. I know, I often feel that way about California.
@ToddSauve
@ToddSauve 2 ай бұрын
@@Agg1E91 Yes, everyone gets annoyed with their neighbours from time to time. I know that here in western Canada there has always been a severe annoyance with Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal and how they _always_ have their thumbs on the scale when it comes to who the federal government governs for. We are far more aggravated with them than we ever are with the US. Not that the US doesn't aggravate us all from time to time, but in the West we dislike Ontario and Quebec's imperialism a great deal more.

Lenny Kravitz was really into revival of the late sixties and seventies during the nineties and this then-well-known 1970 Guess Who song was a natural for him to cover. Everyone knew this song in the seventies, eighties, and nineties, and it was interpreted to have political meaning. I saw your eyebrows raise at the line, "I don't need your war machine. I don't need your ghetto scenes." That part was deliberately political. In 1970, Canada was accepting thousands of people from the US fleeing the Vietnam War and political persecution and people naturally immediately thought of that when they heard those lines in this song.

The Guess Who was one of the most popular bands in America (US and Canada) in the late 60's through the 70's. Lead guitarist Randy Bachman dubbed lead singer Burton Cummings "The Voice". What a fitting moniker! His voice has incredible range, beautiful tone and clarity, and all the power he ever needs to call upon. You need to check out "These Eyes", No Time", "No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature", "Undun", "Hand Me Down World", "Share The Land".

Love Burton Cummings voice.❤❤❤The Canadian rock band The Guess Who's 1969 song "American Woman" has been the subject of much speculation about its meaning. Some believe it's an anti-war song from the Vietnam era, while others think it's a patriotic message. However, Burton Cummings, the band's frontman and co-writer of the song, has said that it was never meant to be political. Cummings has said that he was inspired to write the song after noticing that American women seemed to age faster than Canadian women, which made them "dangerous" in his eyes. He explained that when he sang "American woman, stay away from me," he actually meant "Canadian woman, I prefer you".

👍 The 70s??? Time keeps on ticking... Going through a box of old ticket stubs not long ago.I was blessed. My first rock concert: May 19, 1973 (50 year anniversary last year lol yeah, I'm old, but still above the dirt...) East Tennessee State University Rory Gallagher ZZ Top $4 It was about two months before Tres Hombres came out. (Dusty Hill's 24th birthday, I came to find out on his passing) It was Festival Seating and I managed to get about 15 feet from mic center. Rory Gallagher was pure fire right out of the gate, and his band was phenomenal. (particularly Lou Martin on his electric piano) Rory was amazing to see play and I think that he had as much fun as anyone. Then, Billy Gibbons and the boys came out. Back when they were the most badass blues rock band that ever was. Straw hats, jeans, no beards (but Frank. lol), and BG in a white tshirt w/ pack of Marlboros rolled up in the sleeve(lol). Needless to say, Rory and Billy made a big impression on a 16 yr old. Blues rock, slide guitar nut ever since. RIP Rory, Rod, Lou, & Dusty. Thank You! Keep Rockin' Billy, Frank, & Gerry Openers... They used to be on the radio a lot then. Liked their music, and I ignored their politics. I figured American woman was a metaphor for America's involvement in other countries. I know a Vietnam vet and he told me that during his tour there, around 1968-70, most of the people in South Vietnam hated their own government because they were so incredibly corrupt. He also said if he were Vietnamese at that time he would have been a communist just like almost everyone there. The corruption in their government and military was something awful, such that every little village chieftain was on Saigon's payroll while the average poor farmer got nothing but exploited, and you could not trust the South Vietnamese army to fight the North at all. When a real armed engagement happened with the North or Vietcong, the South Vietnamese army evaporated. It was all an exercise in futility for American troops because the people they were "defending" didn't even want them there.

@@ToddSauve That is one man's opinion, at least according to you. Communism allows no freedom of speech, movement, religion, gun ownership, or any other rights as that we in the free world enjoy. Concentration camps are normal. Even now over 1.5 million are in Communist Chinese concentration camps, and USSR had an estimated 18 million in theirs. For those who claim to love communism, I ask, why do they never act upon this? Perhaps, it is because no one really wants totalitarianism. So ask your "friend" why hasn't he migrated to Vietnam, China, Cuba, or North Korea.

Burton Cummings, the band's frontman and co-writer of the song, has said that it was never meant to be political. Cummings has said that he was inspired to write the song after noticing that American women seemed to age faster than Canadian women, which made them "dangerous" in his eyes. He explained that when he sang "American woman, stay away from me," he actually meant "Canadian woman, I prefer you".

@@willieboy3011 I agree with you completely. I am not a communist and neither is my friend. My friend from church told me this about 30 or 35 years ago. It was his honest feelings about what he saw and experienced as a member of the US army. He joined the US army because he was an 18 year old kid from the interior of British Columbia, Canada and wanted to vanquish "those communists" in Vietnam. His experiences in South Vietnam were completely disillusioning and he came to realize that it was sinking into the hands of the North no matter what anyone like he or the rest of the US army, navy and air force did. I am not making this up, so it is not opinion at all but rather one man's verdict on what he experienced in South Vietnam. He was stationed in the central highlands there. 🤷 You do know that Vietnam was a colony of France until the Japanese took over during WW2 and the French government there sided with Vichy? President Franklin Roosevelt had no intention of allowing the French to retain their colony but he died just before WW2 ended and the US state department convinced Harry Truman to allow the French to move back in. The French had an incredibly corrupt history there. It was not a wise move on the US's part to allow the French back in, or to take up their place when the Vietnamese threw them out. IMHO, they could have worked out a good working relationship with Vietnamese leadership, who had sided with the US against the Japanese during the war and guided US pilots back to friendly territory when shot down over French Indochina, as it was called at that time. But history is what it is and there is nothing we can do about it now.

Burton Cummings voice has been on my favorites list since I first heard it back in the late '60s. I don't really see that changing at any point in the future, No offense was taken in the US as far as I know. This song was all over the radio for quite a while.

Lenny Kravitz did a version of this Guess Who song. The Guess Who themselves have performed many variations of the song. This song came out during perhaps the height of anti Viet Nam war sentiment and I always took it as a statement against a side of America that a lot of people did not like at the time.

🇬🇧 Until watching reaction channels I wasn't aware of this group. But I was aware of this song, I'm not sure wether I knew the song by these guys or Lenny Kravitz (I'm 60 yo). Either way, it's a fantastic tune, & lead singers voice is perfect. They have a very different (yet beautiful) hit from way back when called "These Eyes", that I would love for you to hear. I just know Andrei would love it. ❤🎼

This song illustrates the complex relationship between Canada and the US. The countries have a warm feeling for each other overall, but Canada has a bit of an inferiority complex for obvious reasons-30 M vs 330 M people. Over 90 % of Canadians live within 100 miles of the border with the US, in the 2nd biggest country in the world. Canadian actors, musicians, sportsman, have made it big in America, some of the biggest stars in Hollywood are Canadian-Ryan Reynolds, Keanu Reeves, and a ton of others, and Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Steppenwolf, April LaVigne, Celine Dionne, Gordon Lightfoot. T But Americans are loud and boisterous, where Canadians are usually quite reserved. But to say this song is Anti-American is a misnomer. They were complaining about the same bad things that most Americans were bitching about in 1970. Vietnam, racism, rampant crime in the cities, and the jingoistic attitude of American foreign policy. Great song, great band, who have a long discography. My second fave is NO SUGAR TONIGHT/MOTHER NATURE.

The Guess Who are from my hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba. I used to watch them at Community Club dances when I was 13 which was a looong time ago. LOL This song was about how American girls could be much more forward than Canadian girls also a political statement as this was the time of the Vietnam War. I met a lot of draft dodgers back then. Even Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin has commented on Burton Cumming's voice. Other Guess Who songs These Eyes Sour Suite Albert Flasher Undun So long Bannatyne Humpty's Blues Laughing No Sugar Tonight Cheers 🇨🇦
