Last time I gave someone a book to 'borrow' they kept it for two years (I was so mad and upset) and moved away and when she gave it back it last week, it was still in pristine condition so we're still friends :D

I have a book, that was with a friend for years, and they spilled juice all over it. I don't give books to anyone anymore to read, the before mentioned book just looks so horrible, and I am afraid to lend books now. The only exception is my mother because I know she won't take them out of the house.

My friend ruined my collector’s edition hardback book, got paint all over it, ripped it and lost the dust cover. Another one of my friend’s who i lent a book to like 2 years ago lost it and didnt want to tell me so she blocked me on social media thinking she’d never see me again BUT she lives in my neighbourhood so naturally i walked to her house and asked for it and it was awkward lol

The only way you could really do this is if it’s a companion series. I read a companion series out of order and it was fine, but that was BECAUSE it’s a companion series.

I remember loaning The Night Circus to my friend, and within a week I asked if she'd read it yet (hadn't even started it) so I ended up making this huge lie that I needed it back because my sister-in-law wanted to read it, when actually I just wanted it back with me where it I knew it was safe and sound!

I actually did read the Throne of Glass series out of order because at my library I couldn’t tell if it was the first or second book and by the time I got home I was pretty miffed😂 But it makes me scream when I accidentally get the second or third instead of the first...

I accidentally read Prisoner of Azkaban before Chamber of Secrets. I read Sorcerer’s Stone when I was about ten, and I just didn’t realize it was a series. When I was in the library and saw Prisoner of Azkaban, I was delighted. I grabbed it and read it without giving it a second thought. I didn’t see Chamber of Secrets until a later visit to the library. While I was reading Prisoner of Azkaban, I just remember thinking “Wait, Hagrid was in Azkaban? When did that happen?!”

I sometimes read book series out of order, because that book isn't there in my small hometown's bookstore. What I do is then buy the next book in that series and order the book I missed from the internet. But that book will take a couple days to arrive and I'm so addicted to that series that I continue reading even if it's the wrong book.

I agree with you on the skimming thing. Reading the mortal instruments, I'm on book four now, and honestly the main reason I'm reading at all is because I really ship magnus and Alec. I've skipped so many parts and povs, intire scenes with clary and Jace because I just don't care😧😂

Good answers. I have only done the read out of order a few times because the flipping book wasn't marked properly and it was before Goodreads. It is so annoying when people won't return books or return them trashed and don't even get me started on spoilers.

I've read out of order with the Hex Hall series. I got Demonglass without realizing it is the second one and then ended up not being able to stop reading it so I read Demonglass first and then read Hex Hall. I also did this with the Queen's Thief series.

The reading out of order happened to me by accident with the Wardstone Chronicles. I read the first one and then accidentally the third before the second and I got a bit confused but it wasn't THAT obvious and I only found out years later and suddenly some things made more sense :')

Omg I remember for The Mortal Instruments series, I read City of Ashes first!! It was because I was in a rush at my school library so I just picked up the first book that sounded like it was gonna be good, not even thinking about it being a series. I was literally so confused during the ENTIRE book until I finished... I looked at the back and realized it was THE SEQUEL TO CITY OF BONES! But hey, I mean at the end of the day the TMI series became one of my favorites BC of the second book so I try not to feel too bad about myself.

I have read series out of order because sometimes you grab a book without knowing it is one of a series and it is book 4. I have done that a few times. I use to never mark in my books at all but I started halfway through my undergrad and by graduate school I was marking all over the place and filling up the margins with my notes. My books from classes are my most prized in my collection, I love them, and bending the spines, writing all over them, and folding over pages made them a million times easier to reference when I was writing paper after paper after paper. I re-read a lot of my philosophy, theory, and political books 4+ times and I intentionally broke in the spines so I could lay them flat. Initially it broke my heart, but now it is my preferred way to treat any book because it is like a diary in a way and it is far easier to read a paperback when you have broken in the spine. (Also why I don't borrow books or go to libraries. I hate when people do that to shared books).

Ive read a series technically out of order before. There is this series by Gena Showalter and I didn't know it was a series at the time and read like the 7th book, but it wasn't that bad because each book is a story about a different couple

I read two series out of order (kinda): Harry Potter- I started with the 5th one (when I was 8 ((now 23))my grandma gave it to me as a challenge to read it over the summer holidays-I read it within a week) but then I got the first four, read them and then re-read OotP. Twilight- first full series I bought myself, I read Twilight, then Eclipse, then New Moon, then Eclipse again and finally Breaking Dawn (I remember being so confused at who the Volturi were until I realised I'd read the third book before the second)

Still not much into them now if they're too cringe. Well I would read a book when there's romance in it and often even enjoy the romance but I wouldn't read a book just for romance.

When I was younger, I read the Warriors series out of order - they were at this school book sale, and I remember looking at a table filled with the books and being totally unsure which one was the first book. I still really wanted it though, because CATS, so I just randomly chose one and then read that. I was so confused at first but had a good grasp of what was going on at the end. After that, I just got the first book and then read everything in order. Man, so nostalgic. I still have all the books here, spent so much on my life reading it. That being said, I only have up to the third series I think. Maybe I should reread it.

I am obsessed with the Hunger Games trilogy and own the physical books. But I am living in another city and left these books in my home town, which is a one day travel away. I was in the mood to reread the books, but was 1 month away from my next planned trip home, so I bought the kindle version to read them on my laptop. Unfortunately, this kindle version costed approximately the same as the physical version ... but I never regretted it :D I also have a few of the Harry Potter books in German (physical) and all of them in English, both physical and digital :D And then I also have a few self-improvement type of books both as digital versions and audiobook versions ...

a funny thing about how you mentioned only caring about the romance in a book: while I was in middle school and reading (and re-reading) divergent I read the first book about 6 times but by the last 3 times or so I memorized on which pages my favorite fourtris moments started and only read those. like, i skipped the first half of the book and picked up reading to the end from the first real romantic moment between four and tris. also i semi-accidentally spoiled the very end of the series to my friend, oops.

I read Harry Potter out of order lol. The first book I read is Half-Blood Prince, then book 5, 4, 2, 3, 7. I just never read book 1 cuz when I bought 2-7 book 1 was out of stock and I just never went back to get it lol it wasn't until like, 4 years later I read the first book lol

How I passed Contemporary American Literature in college without doing any assigned reading: Took it during the summer as a half-semester class because that was the only time it was offered that would work with my schedule; ask to write the only paper assignment on The Crucible because the author admitted it was about McCarthyism; use the e-books to search for key terms for the final exam because it was a take-home.

Weirdly. I did have read Harry Potter in an insane order of 1, 4, 3, 2, 5, 6, 7. :D After my reading the 1st book, my mom bought the forth as she couldn't find 2 and 3. So, my reading sequence had been based on availability. Being a kid, I never thought of rereading it as well. I think with Harry Potter, any books from 1-4 starts with them going to school anyways. And luckily for me that the 5th book wasn't released yet at that time, because that book was on a different circumstance.

I read the first warrior cats series out of order because i found it in my school’s library all those years ago and they didn’t have the first one so i took the second one in the series but i didn’t realise until I’d started reading. Then I continued reading the series until the 3rd or 4th and then went back and read the 1st. I also read the necromancer (i think) trilogy out of order in exactly the same way, read the 2nd coz they didn’t have the 1st then read the 3rd and eventually went back to the 1st. Tbh I’m glad I did that tho because after I finished the 2nd book and returned it, someone else took it out and then left the school without giving it back.

Required reading is the worst my AP English 2 class next year decided it would be a great idea to give us “How to read literature like a professor” as our summer reading and let me just tell you. I once read a series out of order and the only reason for that is because I didn't have any idea that it was the second book. I only found that out when I am like feeling so weirded out because I feel like something is missing so I searched information about the book online and then I found out that it was the second book the reason is because it was a gifted book and sometimes I am lazy to look at the other pages where information might say that it is the second book. The book cover and the back did not say it was a second book and that happened. However, I did not finish that book. I first bought the first book and then finish the first book before reading the 2nd book again and that time I finished the book.

I once ACCIDENTALLY read a series out of order. They didn't have the numbers on the spine, I didn't know that much about it. I thought I'd Wikipediad it and then I had the order wrong. Plus it was fantasy/magical realism and each book was very separate and the plot didn't always make sense anyway. So I didn't even realise until I got to the next one =_=

I lent my friend my favourite book bcs i love sharing books i love and when i gave it to her it was a collector’s edition hardback book. When i got it back, she had lost the dust cover, gotten white paint on the hard cover and there were tiny rips near the spine that happen when you flip the pages too fast. Sooo not impressed. Had to search online a bunch for a new one.
