I'm from Canada and I was staying with relatives near London during November 5, and we set off fireworks for the kids and then I went to a huge field where thousands of people watched all the fireworks. It's amazing seeing fireworks wherever I went, especially when I thought I wouldn't see fireworks until New Year's.

Robert Keyes was born Protestant and his father was a C of E Minister, his mother was related to the staunchly Catholic Babthorpes of Osgodby and Keyes later converted to Roman Catholicism. Sir Everard Digby was raised in a Protestant household, and married a Protestant, where later converted to Roman Catholicism by a Jesuit priest.

Yes, you have to wonder why he was alone, though maybe they felt that one person was likely to go unnoticed. It might have been the best way to go and they were just supremely unlucky that the guards happened to check at that time. History tends to be full of very important events being massively effected by small, random events!

No the British royals are Anglican - Church of England - the queen is the head of the church as well as the head of state. Started by Henry 8th after he was told by Rome he could not divorce his 1st wife. In 1605 the king was James 1st, a Protestant.

What you say is true.Organizations do have dark times.We can evaluate when the problem is settled, BUT. We can only respond based on the current situation, so we may as well call it good or bad at that moment in time.WWI was bad at that time.But now it has changed the political scenario for the better as no country now has the right to colonise another.

And many British Army casualties in the first war were Irish conscripts from what is now the Republic of Ireland, which was one of their rallying cries when they finally won their independence. In some ways it could be compared to the plight of Ukranians in the Red Army. So that argument can go either way.

I've been 'off my island' many times, and I'm not sure why you think I haven't. You were talking about Britain, so I replied about Britain. I am not a Christian, as you seem to be implying. I have literally no idea where you got that impression. I was only talking about the role of the British monarch in relation to the Church of England, which is what you were asking about, and what you still seem pretty confused about. I really don't know what your problem is.

Thomas Percy was a crypto-Catholic before he was formally received into the Roman Catholic church and Guy Fawkes was born Protestant but later converted to Roman Catholicisim with the help of his Roman Catholic step father. And King James was on 17 December 1566 in a Catholic ceremony held at Stirling Castle but brought up as a Protestant so history is not as clear cut as one thinks.

I already said I don't support the IRA. I only said that my opinion favors the cause of Irish unification, and that if Ireland under British rule was always so wonderful for everybody then my family probably wouldn't have left. But aren't we all (regardless of nationality) guilty of hypocrisy in one form or other. In that regard, this argument is probably good for keeping all of us honest.

It's hard to find a government, organization, group, etc that wasn't run by assholes at some point in its history. My point is that that even the most charitable and benevolent group can be misguided to do horrible things. It's human nature. Judgement should be made based on the entire story, not just specific parts that best coincide with a preconcieved notion (then you have nothing but propaganda).

Are you off your face? You think if James I was killed then Britain would have said, "Oh, well, never mind about the monarchy then." Eventually James I did die, and you know what? The monarchy didn't end. Charles I became king. And he was beheaded and still the monarchy did not end (well, apart from a short interlude). Besides, the Empire was built because of trade, not by monarchs.
@silverbiscuit15 жыл бұрын
No, the queen is not like a pope. The monarch being the 'head of the church' doesn't mean they make proclamations on religious matters. It's just supposed to mean that they protect the Church of England and are 'responsible' for the religious feelings of their citizens. Today, at least, it doesn't imply any actual responsibility or real control over the Church. And of course it's a Christian church, where did you get that idea?
