Father Fish and Lucas Bretz, LRB Aquatics delve into the intricacies of Betta fish nutrition and feeding as well as the science behind hospital tanks during a conversation held on Sunday night.
While debating the merits of live fish food versus flakes, and freeze-dried bloodworms versus fresh ones, Lucas emphasized the nutritional value of each option while pointing out that the freeze-dried brought along extra unknown factors because of the conditions they were packaged under.
They also debated the importance of preventing uneaten food from sinking to the tank bottom, particularly in Lucas' extensive 300-tank fish room. Father Fish advised ensuring food consumption will mitigate such issues.
Their discussion extended to the challenges of maintaining a sterile environment in a hospital tank. They concluded that despite efforts, it's difficult to achieve sterility due to bacteria introduced by the fish. This realization highlighted the practical limitations of attempting absolute cleanliness in aquaculture settings. Through their exchange, they underscored the nuanced considerations involved in fish feeding and tank management, reflecting the complexities of maintaining healthy aquatic environments. Their conversation revealed the blend of expertise and practical experience necessary to navigate the intricacies of fish care in professional aquatics.

Dear Father Fish, Thank you so much for sharing your endless knowledge through your youtube channel! I've been in the hobby--on and off--since 1992, and after watching your videos, I surely hit a gigantic growth spurt, as hobbyist. For what it is worth, I got into this hobby still back in Russia, where I am originally from, at age 15, with no filter and no water conditioner (water conditioner wasn't a thing back then in Russia), a 70 L heavily planted (basic stuff, like hornwort and anacharis), tank full of completely incompatible fish which was never pre-quarantined, yet I never had any disease outbreaks. I am thinking it was because I was following advice of local fish breeders/ sellers who told me to change water as little as possible as 'old water' was considered as healing and antibacterial. It was not until I moved to the U.S. in 2003 and started a 55 gal with filter and water conditioner (and carefully researched compatible fish) that I had my first ich outbreak. Now, I put all my fish through a rigorous new fish QT as quality of fish (health-wise) is so poor nowadays. Anyway, I really want to understand the MECHANISM (mechanism of action) behind the need for buffers in the substrate. Could you please make a video about it, going deeply into the science behind the need for alkaline substrate and why acidic substrate would be harmful (also, harmful to lifestock or to plants?) Additionally, would it be ok to use crushed Indian almond leaf instead of peat moss in the substrate? I ordered a ton of them, and never ended up using them. So, it would be good if I could use them as part of substrate (although, they are said to release tannings that are acidic... so would that be an issue if they are part of substrate)? Once again thank you so very very much for sharing your endless knowledge! Regards, Yulia Rirdan
@FatherFish
@FatherFish 2 ай бұрын
Really excellent ideas Yulia. I will ask my research staff to help put together something conclusive on buffers. By all means use the almond leaves. Crush them into the substrate and mix them with other kinds of leaves for the surface food web.

I culture my own earthworms. Get a few starters, sterilize them, then put them in a box/crate with shredded wet paper...give them vegies scraps, fruits scraps, then wait...once baby earthworms are out, they are great for fish. I don't feed my fish with earthworms beyond 1cm size.

I’m more careful how I feed in my smaller tanks like 20 gallon and under, not so much in my bigger tanks but I do feed more natural foods than heavily processed foods. Don’t forget that a well balanced natural aquarium has a bigger capacity to handle the processed foods

I need to do a vid on this. If you add 1/2" of coarse gravel to the top of a deep substrate system they will not disturb it much. Add swords, val, fern and anubias to control plant chewing and feed softer plant material such as lettuce as distraction from the plants.

I am attempting to make Paludarium with your method in mind. I have a question about ICK. I am intending to have a cool water species tank, 55-70 degrees Fahrenheit. Since the species I am putting in are not tropical, will the method you use(Increase tank temp to 87F) still okay? I worry it will be too harsh for the collection of fish I will have(Ex. Japanese trapdoor snails, rainbow shiners, Madaka rice fish, cherry shrimp, etc., also research plants that would be good for those temperatures)

Bettas not having the enzymes to digest plant matter is not the same thing as whether or not they should eat it. Even cats, as obligate carnivores, instinctively nibble grass. Human also lack the enzymes to digest cellulose, but our microbiota in the gut does. I doubt the research has been done yet on the microbiome of betta fish, but it would be a reasonable assumption that something similar might exist. Make a good thesis for someone lol
