In a 1992 NFL week 4 game between the Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots, the Patriots lost 41-7. After the game, Patriots head coach Dick MacPherson was asked about a controversial decision that he made during the game that may have changed the entire complexion of it. And MacPherson's justification for why he called the play might be the stupidest bit of coaching in the history of the NFL. This is the story behind the stupidest and dumbest head coach that the Pats have ever had

What younger fans don't realize - in addition to the fact that the Pats of the early 1990s were so dreadful that you felt sorry for them - is that Bill Parcells, who became Pats coach in 1993, is in many ways responsible for the success the Pats have had over the last 30 years. It was Parcells who totally changed the culture of that organization (took a team that was 9-39 from 1990-1992 and had them in the SB four years later). Belichick - a Parcells protege - is a very good coach, but he got extremely lucky with Brady. It was Parcells who laid the foundation for sustained success.

...yet, Bill Parcells is not appreciated by the organization. Players that he drafted and developed are in the Patriots Hall of Fame, but he isn't. The way he left in '96 may have left a bad taste, but like you said, he laid the cultural foundation that has lasted for decades.

I could justify going for it on fourth down in an effort to take a lead a few minutes before halftime, but going for it because you thought the score was 6-0 when it was 3-0?! To use one of your catch phrases, "I'm sorry, WHAT?!" The Patriots were worse than if you did nothing but spike the ball into the ground on every single play back then!

Dick MacPherson tried though.. He had heart. He wasn't good for the pro level... but he actually turned around the attitudes in New England at a time when things were pretty low. I'd say shame he didn't win much but... his losing actually led to them building into a powerhouse

some coaches & people aren't made for several teams. Take a look at Tom Flores. Tom Flores was a QB, and a super bowl winning coach and still he sucked at the same time Coaching the Seahawks. JaguarGator9 is exaggerating extremly here. Yeah the justification and move was stupid. But so what? A million thoughts are running through your brain. He sucked as a NFL-Coach, was confused about the situation and that's it. Thinking the score is 6:0 when in reality it is just 3:0 is not more dumb than passing the Ball on the goal line (or maybe it is). Jim Morra once said: You think you know, but the truth is, you don't know!

I agree man; MacPherson jumping up and down, pumping his fists, leaping into players, making everyone smile... it's turned around for the team, but when MacPherson was there, there was little structure & zero accountability. He got people to give a damn again.

The other thing about all this: MacPherson had health issues in 1992, coaching only 9 games (Dante Scarnecchia, an underrated Patriots dude, finished off the season, similar to Joe Vitt mopping up for the Mike Martz Rams in 2005). In 1991, they were a competitive 6-10 (shame on the 1991 Jets for only being 2 wins better; the Jets were loaded).

I was covering a high school game once. It was a wild game and crazy high scoring. The team I was covering had the ball last and from about its own 30, tried a Stanford/Cal type play with about 10 seconds left. The play actually worked reasonably well but ultimately, they got tackled as time expired. When it was over, I walked over to the coach of the losing team. The first thing he said was to ask me, "What was the final score?" When I told him 49-46, he had what I could only describe as a painful reaction. I think he thought they were down 4 and needed a touchdown. As it turns out, I'll say that I don't think it would have mattered. They didn't have a time out so they would have needed a big play and then to either get out of bounds or get down with enough time to beat the chain gang to the ball and spike it before the clock reset. Neither was that likely and even if it was, anything outside of about 30 is a tall task for most HS kickers. But I thought it was interesting that in that scenario, the coach of a team with the ball and trailing by 3 in the final seconds didn't know the score.

This video has fodder for another video. At 11:55, Footage from the 1992 broadcast states the New England Patriots started 0-3 in 1985 and finished 2-14. Last time I checked, in 1985, the Patriots went to the Super Bowl and had their rump roast handed to them by the Chicago Bears, with a final score of 46-10. Let's see a video about the person who was stealing a paycheck by allegedly being NBC's NFL statistician.

When MacPherson was the coach at Syracuse, they went 11-0 in the 1987 regular season and went to the Sugar Bowl. Late in the game, with the score 13-13, MacPherson kicked a field goal to take the lead, then whined about it when Auburn kicked one of their own at the end of the game to tie it again. Later on, he said he was sure when he kicked his field goal, that Auburn wouldn't kick one to take the tie--even though Syracuse was the higher-ranked team and had spent the whole month complaining about not having a shot at the national championship even though they didn't beat a single team that finished ranked. (Miami and Oklahoma were both 11-0 against much tougher schedules.) I never had much respect for him after that. If you're going around telling people you're the best team in the country, you either stop them on that last drive or you shut your trap.

I'm paused at the 3:14 mark; I was in Puerto Rico during the 1992 Fall semester, and Hurricane Andrew tore through the Gulf area in the week or so leading to the NFL opener. These are the Patriot teams that I grew up watching. My whole childhood they were a terrible franchise. I was a little too young to remember the 1985 Patriots so all I ever remember are teams like this. This is the biggest reason why I’m so thankful for the BB/Tom Brady era. It’s also the reason I never became one of those douchebag Patriots fans that I see all the time now. It’s ok to enjoy the 20-year run they had with Brady but it’s teams like this 1992 squad that remind me all the time of what it used to be like rooting for the Pats. It puts things in perspective.

While that is pretty bad i'm going to cut Macpherson a bit of a break here. He was a head coach and had a ton of success in Syracuse which is a bit of a miracle in some respects. (tho not nearly as difficult as it is today) He was plagued with a lot of health issues during his New England tenure and that alone makes it hard for a coach to be on the ball. Let's also remember, New England was a JOKE in that time period to the point that they were an embarrassment to the league.

The only way I could justify forgetting the score is if it was a Fog Bowl or Blizzard Bowl and NOBODY could see the yard lines, much less the scoreboard. But even then, in 1992, if nobody knew the score on the sideline, it would take a few seconds to find the radio sideline guy and check the score with the radio network! On this overcast and warm day though, just absolutely no excuse!

Luckily for the Patriots they were able to get Bill Parcells and they improved each year until they finally made it a Super Bowl in 1996.

They found the red zone a lot more after Brady's predecessor, Drew Bledsoe, found his footing, but after Bledsoe was badly injured in a home game vs. the Jets, Brady eventually took things into overdrive and the rest is history.

Ah, Dick MacPherson. His last year coaching was the year before I began watching the game, but his name lives on in a computer game I played…well, it sort of lives on. The game had a league with fictional versions of the 1992 NFL, complete with generic names (e.g., Patriots were Minutemen) and anagrammed coach names. New England’s coach was Shep MacDockin. 1992 had been the first year for the game, and it was the only one in which they didn’t have an NFLPA license. 1993 kept the generic team names but real players. 1994 added team names, helmet logos (though not in gameplay), and end zone art. The two things they carried on from year to year were having an archived 1992 league, and having anagrams for the names of coaches. Homer Glemkin, Hal Sundo, Cub LeCorset, Mel Varvy, Stefan Waney. Long live Front Page Sports: Football Pro!

I have fond memories of Football Pro, though I only ever played one of the late 90s versions of the series, that had the actual players, coaches and teams. My dad and I still have a joke inspired by that game. The announcer would always say "(Player Name) in motion," and at that time the Chargers had a receiver named Pupunu. So if one of us needs to take a restroom break, we still say that we "need to send Pupunu in motion!"

@@DamonNomad82, let’s see…it’s possible that ‘99 might have had the coaches’ names, but I don’t think any of the others did. Did this one also have actual helmet logos on the players’ helmets?
@DamonNomad82

@@MatthewChristianMurray They did have the logos on the helmets. It let you customize the uniforms, but if you did, the helmet logo changed to the Sierra mountain logo.
@MatthewChristianMurray
@MatthewChristianMurray Жыл бұрын
@@DamonNomad82, bingo! That’s FBPro ‘98. The helmet logos didn’t show up in gameplay, only in team management. ‘98 was a good one. ‘99 was the last one. Madden-style animation, but the gameplay was atrociously buggy. It was recalled, and Sierra shut the series down shortly thereafter.
