I think the anklet is called a "Kathak Ghungroo", but if you pick up some small, cheap jingles and tie them together into a similar form, you get about the same. Use the leftover bells to make a custom cymbal sizzler that doesn't scuff your finish (using brass or copper jingles).

I left my wire cutters sitting on the snare drum after I cut some bad snare wires, they did a good job with the ring as they have just enough weight to not really move and take some ring out, not super technical but we’ve all got some pliers or a hammer or something

When you detune one lug it puts uneven stress on the drum head and can cause it to break the head when hit hard!

I like to tape a piece of 5x7 note pad paper off to side on my snare. Takes out the ring without too much dampening

I like a bit of ring on my snare. I guess it depends on the type of ring. I'm a huge fan of Bill Bruford in general and his snare sound in particular, which was also quite ringy. I also like a higher pitched snare, crisp and cutting, but that's all a matter of taste and context. My snare is a brushed aluminium Premier 36 14"×5½ that's been my snare since the late 70s. It was the second snare I ever got and I've been very happy with it. I use a lot of rim shots and, you're quite right, I deliberately hit it off centre to get more ring. One thing I found very effective for reducing ring is a head with the hoop cut off and a big hole in it. Basically a 2" strip going around the rim. I've always hated sticking stuff to my heads, especially gaffer tape. Moon gel is OK, at least it doesn't leave all that gunk, but, like you said, I prefer to use other methods, like detuning a lug or two and as I like a high pitched drum and a bit of ring, it's not a problem for me, unless I'm using studio drums. My old drum teacher, many years ago, used to have us practise hitting a sixpence coin in the centre of the head. That was tricky as the coin would bounce around a lot and it's a very small coin, about ½" in diameter (and no longer in circulation, it was pre decimalisation, so before ’72). I hope I've answered your question somewhere in here. BTW the only live in LA recording I've found on my streaming service is live at the Nokia theatre in 2007 but I hear what you mean. There's a ton of a low pitch ring. It sounds more of a buzz to me. It's quite a while until the song before that deep snare comes in, so I wasn't sure I had the right recording. Great video, as always 🍻

BTW, very nice groove on that track. Haven't really heard much of John Mayer before now, so thanks for the recommendation.

hey man! i recently ran into a HUGE ringing problem...then snare rang sizzled n played obnoxiously...the reason was i got a new evans power center head n my old snare side head was completely aged into nothingness...so i just put the old top head on the bottom...this head came with the kit a cheap chinese "jinbao" kit...the head wasnt exactly coated but it was colored that way...anyway no matter what i did the drum sounded like crap...tried everything including lots of gaffer tape n moon gels...finally what worked was detuning the lugs next to the snare wires...the rest of the lugs were cranked up all the way...top head was pretty tight but much looser than the snare side...in the end i loosened the four lugs next to the snare wires and placed a couple of moon gels on either side of the snare wires an inch or so away from the rim....now it sounds great! nothing on the top head n two moon gels on the bottom...i know my biggest mistake was putting the old top head on the bottom but hey i got it to work in the end!

I'm having difficulty getting a good rim click from my 14 inch snare. I'm using a clear Remo Ambasador for the reso head and a coated Remo Emperor X with the sound control dot for the beater side. I play with my stick reversed and the tip of the stick on the snare head and around the American flag on the rim with a Vic Firth stick. I try several spots but can't get a distinct click. I tried with the snare on and with the snare off. I tried light and heavy sticks. I was thinking of switching to a Remo Ambassador Coated Drum Head - 14 Inch.

Enjoyed today’s lesson. I have a cheap Ludwig metal snare I’ve fought for years with tuning, new and different heads, muffle rings etc. I put a charm bracelet on it that I borrowed from my wife, and viola! She’s not getting her bracelet back!

a " where are your mistakes and how find them" book/lesson could be cool, i'm the ones that don't even know they do bad things but i always see videos about "how to do this better" without knowing if i have to learn this or something else Just a suggestion :p

Hey Steve, I want to present an interesting thing I experienced and hope to get some answers. I have a DW Design Series Nickel over Brass 14 X 6.5 Snare purchased Used via Reverb in 2021. It came with an Evans HD Dry batter head. The drum was Cranked and sounded very good. Better than the pdp Concept Maple snare that came with my Kit (also purchased Used at Guitar center). Recently I replaced the batter head with the same HD Dry batter, re-installed the Reso head and the Standard Snare wires. I have tried many variations to get it tuned like when I received it. It is tabletop tight on the Reso and pretty cranked on the batter. Yesterday, while dealing with my frustration, I placed the DW on my 16 inch Floor Tom. I played the pdp snare and a Mapex Popcorn snare , 13 X 3.5 placed in the snare stand. When I hit the DW atop of the Tom, Bingo.... it was spot on. It delivered the sound that I was seeking - Bonham sound from his Ludwig Snare!! - That nice Snap and slight overtone. However, when I place it in the snare stand - it is not the same? Does anyone have an idea as to what is going on with the Percussion?

Anybody have any Idea about this... Update, I tried a UV2 Batter head on the DW snare. It was OK to my ear - fully cranked up, less so when medium tuned. I re-installed the HD Dry head again, tuned it up high and that sounds very good, but Improved when atop of the Floor Tom?? A Nice Pop with controlled Over ringing.

After starting drumming in Hardcore Punk and Grindcore bands I’ve tuned the top head to as tight as it can be and the bottom head to pretty tight also. I’ve been doing it for few years now and I tried tuning my other snare lower and couldn’t get it right. Thank you for the video, let’s see how this turns out.

Righty tighty lefty loosy. Make sure when you tighten the lugs that you take up each lug a little bit at a time, as well as that you tighten the lugs in a star pattern to keep the tension even so as not to warp the rim. Just look it up online if you don’t know what that is Good luck!!
