Locating all three axis seems a lot easier with this probe than my current method. I just ordered one, can't wait to get it. Nice video, thanks for posting.

Great tool. Can't live without it. I did finally break a probe tip after two years of use. Pissed me off but I did buy a spare so after a few minuets of dialing it in I was back up and running. I ordered mine off of Amazon.

Two things to fully understand. 1. You MUST calibrated the sensor to your spindle’s center line. You do this by tracking the ball on the sensor with a reliable indicator held stationary on the machine. (Not under power....turn your spindle by hand.) You make any adjustment necessary to the sensor with tiny opposing set screws in the top of the sensor in the same manner as mounting work in an independent four jaw chuck. If you don’t want to do this every time you place the sensor in the spindle than you must dedicate a toolholder and collet to the sensor and leave this assembly together as a unit. 2. The tips are held in the sensor with a knurled ring around the thread. This means they are meant to be finger tight. Guess what happens over time to something that is finger tight......you’ve got it.....it loosens up and the sensor will give you erroneous measurements every time you use it that way. You must get yourself in the habit of CHECKING THE TIGHTNESS OF THE TIP EACH TIME YOU GO TO USE IT. I haven’t been brave enough to put any thread locker on the threads to help hold it in place because when you crash it you must be able to unscrew the tip for replacement. If you crash it bad enough the pointer will not start at zero even with tip replacement. You must disassemble the unit.(They are not as delicate as Haimer leads you to believe.). I have posted elsewhere (not KZbin, can’t remember where exactly) on how to recalibrate the sensor. No you do not need to send it to Haimer and pay a ridiculous amount of money to get it back months later. Hope this helps someone.

Thank you for those tips @37yearsofanythingisenough! You are correct in that you definitely want to set concentricity for your specific machine, which we cover at 00:54 in this video. In regards to your second point, if the only issue is that the dial is not resting at zero, Haimer USA’s Tech team has a PDF that could help with that, and you wouldn’t need to take the unit apart. Sometimes, after a crash, more than the dial is damaged, and in that case, we do recommend having the sensor repaired by Haimer. If interested in that PDF, please contact us at tech@haimer-usa.com. Thank you!

I was about to ask if this is worth the $$$ to use on a bridgeport manual mill ... after watching the rest of the video I think the answer is yes. Using the Z to measure depth or to find the center of circular features is useful. Who's a good supplier in Western Canada?

Maybe someone can help me. I am trying to center the probe. In the video, it is shown how one bolt is squeezed out, and the opposite is tightened. I try to do the same for myself, but when I release one of the bolts, the opposite one does not tighten. It is already tightened all the way. The bolt manipulation does not cause any reaction at all on the ball.

If you have a Universal model, there is a bolt that runs down the center of the shank. Loosen that bolt and torque it to 4.5 ft-lbs or 6 Nm. This should correct the issue and give you the ability to set concentricity easier. Reach out to Haimer Tech department for further support.

Hello. How often adjust the 3d sensor? If I have spindel without ATC, I need to colibrate it each time?
@DKNguyen3.1415
@DKNguyen3.1415 Жыл бұрын
Yeah. Or you would need to accept some amount of tolerance. Not unlike throwing something into a lathe chuck indicating it in and re-aligning the chuck.

Silly question, but how do you install it? Like measuring the tool so when you set the zero it Will calculate in the right way?
@chrismayhew3651
@chrismayhew3651 2 жыл бұрын
My manual method of doing it is to first check the spindle nose height (or what ever surface your tool references to ) with respect to the table is zero using a 100mm gauge block (so I know the spindle nose is 100mm off the table) then set the Haimer tool length using the same gauge block on the table as an offset. This will then give you the Haimer tool length offset.

I'm interested in this tool, but I have a concern... when measuring flatness, is there a chance the indicator will start moving sideways while being dragged along a non smooth surface? Thanks Jimmy

That is true with _any_ indicator, and a high side load can cause inaccurate readings. Take a good finish cut!
@DKNguyen3.1415
@DKNguyen3.1415 Жыл бұрын
I was told you aren't supposed to drag this sensor along edges because it wears the tip out. You need to move away from the piece then touch into it. And from experience you shouldn't drag because dragging will cause the probe to drag and stick in the direction of dragging which is 90 degrees to the direction you want to measure since the probe can move all directions. It can be quite frustrating since the three extra movements greatly extends the time it takes to align something and accidentally break the tip. If you throw in a test indicator it would be much faster to align to the machine axis since you can drag then. Once the part is straight then you can use the Haimer to dial in the coordinates of the edge. Test indicators definitely win out if you need to drag along the edge or surface and care more abour variation than actual coordinates.

When a collision has made the zero to adjust. The needle shows more like -2.3 when its zero. How to fix that?
@RoboDriller
@RoboDriller 9 ай бұрын
You can zero it. There's set screws on top that go down into the dial, like the 4 that go into the holder.

Please improve your quality control for bolting the shaft to the sensor. Mine was way over torqued. It also often looses it's calibration. If you buy one, check it before every day's use. Mine is constantly off. It's a time saver, but reliability is questionable.

I did at the time and I was informed that the warranty was some absurdly short time. They gave me the appropriate torque value for that bolt, but wanted money for me to send it in. I'm not saying I don't use it or that it doesn't work, just that one bump and your off center. Most importantly, your essentially on your own.
