"The Hair of Isaac Newton" sounds like some sort of nerdy cocktail drink that you'd order at the pub across the street from the Royal Society....

These objects give me a distinct "religious" artefact feel. Almost like Newton is some saint of Science, especially when seeing relics of hair samples alleged to be his. Just something I found interesting to think about.

My hot take on ivory is that any new ivory is of course despicable and shouldn't be traded in, but if we're talking about historic objects then that's a whole other class. These things hold a significant historic value because it tells a story of multiple generations. The ivory trade associated with slave labor, which associated with that whole century, which is when mankind started to enlighten itself beyond religion. It's almost poetic, how these things somehow lead mankind to the greater good, abolishing slavery, abolishing ivory, learning science and eventually applying all that we learned to undo the hole in the ozone layer. It was all apart of it.

I don't think the hair itself contains DNA. If there are follicules attached, then yes, but otherwise not. I could easily be wrong of course.

Keith is the first person I think of when the Royal Society is mentioned. And he’s a credit to the profession of the Library Arts. And that Van der Hagen portrait of Newton looked a bit like Brady, didn’t it?

Beethoven's hair has been done. Of several alleged specimens (I forget the number) several were from the same individual and had good provenance so they were deemed to be genuine; two were from other individuals and deemed to be not genuine. The DNA analysis allowed some inferences to be made concerning Beethoven's health.
@MusicFanatical1
@MusicFanatical1 Жыл бұрын
Let's compromise by saying they are hairs from his wigs. That way they can be from different people yet also Newton's hair and we all win. Maybe that's the real provenance.

"Problematic" is some of the understatements ever heard from Keith.
@secularmonk5176
@secularmonk5176 Жыл бұрын
I despise that word, because of how expansive its definition has become. The real purpose of the word -- in the era of identity politics -- isn't to enlighten or add context, but to threaten with destruction. To intimidate into silence. To try to deflate high regard for the achievements of the Western world. Just today, I encountered an article in the New York Times about Picasso, giving consideration to the idea that because he was a "mean guy", we should no longer take inspiration from his art. Think of what a shallow world is left if you get rid of everything "problematic". Everything from before the observer's lifetime is tainted ... and therefore vulnerable to political manipulation by those resentful of the status quo.

I get the feeling Kieth was being nice to you. There's no DNA in hair itself. You'd need the root to test for DNA.

There is some DNA even in rootless in hair, it's just very hard to extract by normal means. It can be extracted using the same techniques used for fossilised bones, but that's still a very expensive process.

Unless the hair includes the roots, it can't be used for standard DNA analyses. There are some techniques that work on rootless hairs, but they're less reliable and very expensive.
