I love the way that Alice Wu uses the double yellow do not cross lines to separate the characters Ellie and Paul on the road then Ellie and Aster at the end. How difficult must it have been to stick to this?

2smoulder what didn’t make it into the interview, Alice spoke about her own story that inspired The Half of It. She had a college best friend who was male and straight, it was right around when Alice was realizing that she was gay. When her friend found love with a girl, his girlfriend was threatened by their friendship and ultimately Alice suffered her first heartbreak from the loss of her friend. Knowing that story, it made me appreciate the ending even more - like it was a tribute to that lost friendship from college... it was her happily ever after.

KIYRA LYNN Thnx Kiyra...I heard that on one of AWs other interviews. It’s obvious that this film is based on Alice’s life experiences, as well as her unique screen writing and directing skills. I’m praying 🙏🏻 that she’ll eventually consider The Other Half of It, but not hopeful from what she’s said so far 🍍🦉🐛🐬

One of the best and most incisive interviews around. This film was beautiful in so many ways, so big shout out to Alice Wu and the cast 🙌🙌. I have my own China girl and her mannerisms are identical, even to the slamming of my car door! Btw she also writes papers, but for Uni students, which I have never understood until now 🤔. Leah’s back story also tugs at my heart strings, which makes me love her even more...is that even possible? Great casting and looking forward to “the Other half of it” in a few years time. Someone give WuHu an external deadline please 😍🐬

Aw, thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed the piece and that the film touched you too (my heart was so full at that end scene). Plus, this cast - not only were they really good in this project they are also very sweet and kind people as well. :)

Easter egg: the pics of Ellie’s mom are of Joan Chen who was in Saving Face, Director Alice Wu’s first feature!
