i know these legacy videos don't do big viewing numbers. but as a 50-year old it's nice to reminisce about the great players of the past. it's also important for young people today to be aware of the great stars of the past, that helped make the game what it is and/or contributed to the legacy of the teams they played for. really appreciated carbo's body of work in 1993 in shutting down (after game 1, onwards) wayne greztky in the stanley cup final. was also a fine 3rd-line checking center that helped DAL win their 1st (and only to date) stanley cup in 1999.

Carbo is a beloved habs former captain and coach. my favorite carbo moment is when he gave the cup first to Denis Savard in 93 because he never won it. he instaured the "older player who never won gets to raise it first" rule that saw many beloved players not captain to be able to raise it first like Ray Bourque with the Avs

First watched him play for the Habs farm team in Nova Scotia. In Game 5 of the Cup final Gretzky had Carbs draped all over him and didn't have a shot in that game at all while facing elimination. Roy got all the credit but the Habs played a phenomenal series

Carbo did something you didn't mention. Blocked shots . He was fearless on a penalty kill . Throwing his body in front of everything. With his clear visor barely covering his nose. Loved that Guy! Happy you mentioned the Guy chants in the Forum too, it wasn't synchronized so the name just bounced around the building from every direction at once.

I remember a period when I went back and watched archived footage of hockey games before my time. I always go back to 1993 with Carbonneau. While everyone rightfully remembers Patrick Roy’s heroics during that incredible Stanley Cup run, I remember watching footage of Carb shutting down the Great one himself during the Finals. When I read up on how he requested to shadow Gretzky after the game 1 loss, that made me love him even more. The fact that he had to wait to get into the hall of fame was just ridiculous. I guess 3 Selke’s, 3 cups, and managing to successfully mitigate arguably the greatest player of all time in the Stanley Cup finals wasn’t enough to get first ballot. Regardless, he is one of my favorite players and I’m glad you got around to covering him. Also I’m wondering if you will ever cover either Andy McDonald or Samuel Pahlsson. Both careers I feel are interesting to talk about.

While I am certainly a novice compared to most Hockey Fans one attribute I do think is important to mention about Guy Carbonneau that wasn't was his ability to win face offs. I am almost certain he is in the top 40 all time in Face-off win %. That attribute in the "dead puck" and pro-defensive era was integral in late game, OT & playoff situations. However while as I said he finished his career in the top 40 all time in face-off win % that doesnt do justice explaining how great he was in the last 7-10 years of his career at winning face-offs. He was among the very elite late in his career to the point teams would try to do anything to avoid him taking face offs or get more favorable match ups. It is not like teams don't scheme in every situation to get more favorable match ups however to be so skilled that teams are micro managing face offs scenarios speaks tremendously about how skilled of a veteran he was.

I'm pretty sure it was Carbonneau...one game in the Montreal zone, against the side boards, he ended up with the puck between his skates. There really wasn't much from the other team trying to dig out the puck so he just started shuffling along the board towards the blue line with the puck between his skates with all the players just kind of watching. He didn't quite make the blue line before the ref blew the whistle and gave him a delay of game penalty. One of the funniest things I've ever seen in a game. :)

Doing all the work that goes largely unnoticed by the general public, and letting other guys have most of the fame. Nugent-Hopkins type in the sense that they rarely get the headlines, over the superstar teammates, but true fans know just exactly how insanely valuable they are. Loved when he helped the Stars win their 1st in 1999 and was a little sad to see my Devils keep him from a second with the Stars the year after! The Dallas Stars never get mentioned when people talk about Dynasties! But this team dominated the Western Conference from 1998 to 2000 and made it to 2 Cup finals in a row and winning 1! That’s a mini dynasty in my book! Side note 📝: so jealous of my cousin Roger in Montreal for meeting Carbonneau couple years ago, talked to him and got his autograph ✍️ cause I’m a billion times more of a hockey head(fan) than he is lol

What amazes me is that in the 80s, Guy Charbonneau was being recognized as a Selke candidate (if not winner) basically every year, but if we had someone like him today, they wouldn't get close to a Selke. Ryan Kesler had to score 40 goals to get anywhere near a Selke. Even during the Dead Puck Era and to this day, unless you're at least a 70 point player, good luck getting any Selke consideration. It's basically a consolation prize for some who is good defensively but not quite good enough offensively to win any of the other awards. In the 80s, when scoring was everything, they actually gave the award to the Best Defensive Forward. How much or little they contributed offensively was fundamentally irrelevant. I wish we'd go back to that. We need the Selke to go to a Guy Charbonneau type of player who excels at shutting other teams down and whether he puts up points or not isn't important.
