Jumbo Joe Thornton was my childhood. Him along with Setoguchi, Marleau, Clowe, Boyle, and Nabby made my formative years as a hockey fan. He'll for sure get his number up there with Patty in the rafters at SAP.

I hated Thornton, then again I'm a Blues fan and he basically tried to kill my favorite player, gave my favorite concussion symptoms that caused him to miss the rest of the season. Perron would only play in 10 games that season and 57 in the next. Perron wears a large, tinted visor BECAUSE OF that hit.

Those were some of the strangest series results I have ever seen. The Wings were the better team every single matchup. The Sharks overall team play and players never translated that well in the playoffs, and the streaky goaltending made them non-viable as contenders (they could have managed if they were a better possession team, less finesse -- they were never tenacious enough on the backcheck to make that playoff hockey magic happen). Defense wins championships. Thus, they have none.

@@slamdunkgator915 Yeah, I see Jumbo as a first ballot hall of famer. Marleau was probably a borderline case for the HoF until he broke the games played record. I could see them waiting until Jumbo's eligible and putting the two of them in together since their careers are so intertwined. As far as Jumbo's number being retired, I'm nearly certain that will happen, probably next season. Then again, they might wait for him to officially retire and he could decide he wants to play in Davos for awhile before officially hanging up the skates (which would also delay his HoF admission).

I'm someone who began admiring Joe in Boston, even when Burns was throttling his playing time, I wasn't the only one to see the rips in the mask. And we were the same people that also saw DEFINATE Bruins management problems and would hardly stick up for them. So, here's a few historical chestnuts: 1) Adam Oates was dealt, partly as a favor to him. There were dark off-ice things that I doubt few but the parties involved know about. 2) The 400 lb Gorilla line was a great idea and a dominant line, but once Mike Knuble moved on, it turned out he was a key catalyst, and the effectiveness with Thornton and Murray dissipated. 3) Joe was a wrecking machine off ice, mostly to local bars and restaurants, some refused to serve him, some did but were not thrilled about it. 4) I'm pretty sure it was a New Jersey match I was at right before the trade, but I do recall him appearing to quit playing during the game, not even attempting to take the puck during a face off. 5) Agree the 2011 hypothesis is not exactly sound, but I do firmly believe the trade accelerated Bergeron on his path as one the Greatest Bruins in history, Also, the on-ice leadership took a HUGE jump and the locker room lawyer cliques were not allowed to gain a foothold. To Joe's credit, he did seem to mature significantly in San Jose and I never held his success against him. But me and others didn't particularly miss him, either.

What always will stick out with me with Jumbo Joe is that he seemed to be two different players, and two different people, between Boston and San Jose. In Boston his goal/assist ratio was more balanced but he was much more physical and a snarly. It seemed the moment he went to San Jose he became an excellent perimeter playmaker but also got the, as Tom Larschied called him, the "loveable lug" personality he kept the rest of his career where he was the big, chill nice guy mentor on a team.

Kind of a jerk on the ice, but you've gotta respect how great a player he was, especially at passing.

The thing that pisses me off about Thornton, he used to step over the centre line when talking with refs while playing the Canucks. I felt it was his form of intimidation/disrespect towards Henrik.

@Ian Hall the current jerseys are nice tho. Brought back the waist stripes, the wave pattern inside the stripes, the fin logo on the shoulders. They're solid. It's the ones before that sucked

@@Tech_-on1ou I guess I should clarify that my problem is more with the socks, pants, jersey, gloves and helmets all being the same color. If they kept the pants, gloves and helmets black I would have no problem with them. Also I don't know if it's the TV I watch it on but the teal looks like a different shade than the previous two renditions.

@Ian Hall agreed, I like the contrast with the black as well. Gives more pop. Just like the shoulder pad jerseys. But the new jerseys on their own are lit.

He needed to be paired with a true sniper in their prime, but it never happened. He did the best he could with less than ideal linemates. The worst thing I would say about him was that he would often refuse to shoot to the point of absurdity.

He had Pavelski, Heatly, Burns, Marleau… he even made Jonathan Cheechoo the Rocket Richard winner 😂

@@MrVisde Heatley was past his prime when he joined the Sharks, and wasn’t there for long. Marleau has never been a sniper. Pavelski tips pucks in front of the net better than anyone, but has never been a sniper. And Cheechoo, he was a hard working third liner who had one great season, followed by one good season, mostly thanks to Joe. I didn’t say he had no help, they had good teams, he was just a setup man with less than ideal trigger men.

@@kftc1980 yeah, I know what you mean…would’ve been fun to have Selanne and Thornton overlap with the Sharks. Still, Marleau sniped (566 goals, #23 all-time).
