Here's something to think about in regards to Mats Sundin. For those who may have forgotten, there were 2 different offers placed for Eric Lindros in 1992: one by the Flyers and one by the Rangers. Imagine if it had been the Rangers trade that had gone through instead of the Flyers one. It would have meant no Peter Forsberg in Quebec, which would have meant Mats Sundin would have been the 2nd best Centre on the team behind Joe Sakic.....which means it's likely that Sundin would have never been traded to the Leafs. He may not have put up the points some of the stars of his generation did but he never looked outmatched against anyone and had the best backhand in the league. Sundin's toughness was also underrated. He didn't fight or lay giant attempted murder head shots like Clark, but he was a freight train that used his size as well as anyone, and could face wash a guy in to the ice if they didn't act right. Also 28th all time in points, and 25th in goals. Not too shabby

If he played in the 80s, he might have been compared to another big centre, Mario. But his prime years were in the dead puck era, so it’s impossible to compare them. And he was a bit like the Sedins, not always playing with elite linemates. It seemed a lot of the time they were carrying linemates. He was remarkably consistent from year to year. 40 goals during that yawnfest is pretty impressive. I still think he could have played after that one season in Vancouver. He wasn’t fantastic, but he wasn’t bad, either. I wish he’d stayed for another season in Vancouver, with tempered expectations.

I mentioned this in a separate post I made a moment ago, but since you said you'd take Sundin over Forsberg, I'd like you to imagine a world where the Rangers trade for Lindros in '92 was the one that went through instead of the Flyers trade, which would have meant Forsberg not around in Quebec to make Sundin, for lack of a better word, expendable. His final season pro-rated to about 20 goals and 40 assists. Not bad for a guy who was nearing 40 years old or so. He probably had another couple of productive seasons in him.

Best trade Cliff Fletcher ever made. IMHO, the best Maple Leaf since Borje Salming. I much prefer him to Matthews. Mats was very loyal, and I think Mattews is going to leave at the first opportunity. Another excellent video Mr. Hockey Guy.

Hard to argue Sundin wasn't a great player. One player can't win the cup on his own, you need a team. I think he stepped up in the playoffs. Sundin never got a cup but I blame the GMs in this case not the player.

I have the same view... It's a damn shame that he never won one, but it is what it is. He played well, dedicated himself to a win. Toronto management is the one to blame.

I wished the Wings could've grabbed him in FA, one of my favourite players

Aw man we could’ve for sure bring him a cup. It would’ve added more depth to our roster at the time

How are you fans of both those teams???!
@Adam2023 жыл бұрын
@@klompsauce They must not have been around for the rivalry. Although even though I was around for it I don't dislike the Avalanche anymore. That era has passed and the teams are very different now. I'm grateful that both teams existed because that rivalry was the best I've seen in hockey since. LGRW!

There are no Finnish hockey fans in their 40s who don't have a love/hate relationship with Sundin. In 1991 World Championships Finland was leading Sweden 4 to 2 with less than minute to go. Sundin scored twice and the game ended 4 to 4. What made it more bitter was that Kenta Nilsson did exactly the same thing in the 80s.

Sundin was fine with the Canucks. 1 year deal so it only hurt the Owner's wallet... even if it was 2 years it probably would have been fine. Regular season totals maybe not quite as advertised but 28 pts in 41 isn't bad he didn't really come in ready to play either, and he was PPG in the playoffs. Unfortunately that team was not as good as the Blackhawks though. And absolutely he was good enough to win a Stanley cup, lots of great players don't get cups, and you have 4th liners who have won it a ton of times. He's easily one of the greatest Swede's to ever play the game

Sundin never really made a mark in the swedish league but he was a beast for the national team.

he came out of Sweden pretty early IIRC. Played two seasons there, tops. But you're right, always clutch for the national team

As a Leaf fan from the west coast I feel Leaf fans from Ontario don’t give Sundin enough credit.
