I know Benn has the Art Ross trophy, but I don’t really see him as a Hall of Famer. 909 points in 1117 games is very good, but not great. Tavares for instance has much more impressive totals, and I wouldn’t say he’s a lock either at this point.

Benn only has an Art Ross because John Tavares was too honest and reported that he hadn't actually scored the goal that would have given Tavares the title over Benn. Benn has no business being considered.

As a stars fan, I’d agree. I mean, he did deserve his Art Ross regardless of whether Tavares was “too honest” or not. Weird take. But until the Stars win a cup there’s no case for his inclusion. He’ll have his number retired at Dallas of course, but he’s not quite there for HoF

@ ah yes you mean playing it and watching it my entire life (born in the 80s)…Toews is a two way forward with, let me check, ONE Selke Award…that’s it. He couldn’t have been that good defensively. And the way he was being hyped by Blackhawk fans like he was Crosby or Ovi’s equal was and is still laughable. Fringe HoFer in my opinion but he was a media darling and gets in because of cups.

Not really sure how Pasta and Drai are in and Marner is "close" and Rantanen isn't just straight up in. One of the best playoff performers in the past decade, Stanley Cup, multiple 100pt seasons. That's a really weird take.

@MikeC-nu7ty Ай бұрын
As a Leafs fan Rantanen is one of the most underrated players in the NHL. IMO. Probably an unfortunate side effect of playing with MacKinnon and Makar. Though I fully agree Pasta and Drai are in and Marner is close. Don't see how that is confusing.
@chanses7576
@chanses7576 Ай бұрын
@MikeC-nu7ty yeah not saying those are confusing, but not saying Rantanen is in or close to in is absurd. Pasta and Drai are missing the most important piece of hardware. Rantanen went through Drai to get his and dominated in that series. Idk just doesn't make sense to me how he's not rated on the same level. Nate, Kuch and McDavid are all a step ahead of these guys and McDavid is a step ahead of Nate and Kuch. That's kind of why it's weird to me.
@MikeC-nu7ty
@MikeC-nu7ty Ай бұрын
@chanses7576 like I said. It's just because he's living in MacKinnon and Makars shadow, unfortunately. I barely even see his name mentioned ever despite being a top 10-20ish player in the league (which is insane in the NHL these days). It's crazy. It's just such a stupid time in hockey talent wise that a lot of these great players don't get the recognition they deserve. Edit: changed to 10-20ish. He's amazing but I think top 10 is pushing it.

@@MikeC-nu7ty It's a blessing and a curse, so many fun players to watch but most casual fans just lock in on the top superstars. Before Johnny's unfortunate death, I truly don't think most eastern conference team fans knew he had 115 points, was 4th in hart voting and an arguable top 5 player in the league in his last season with the flames. Same could be said for Barkov before the cup run and many others.

Makar is already and unequivocally a lock. The man got all conceivable major trophies for his position at the age of 23. The only possible concern is longevity, but that wasn't really the case for Orr's induction either and he still is the measuring stick for all defensemen. As for Makar, even potential career-ending injury in the foreseeable future can't take away what he has already achieved. Sure, he's got some iffy defensive reputation for the time being, but stay-at-home tendencies tend to peak much later in players' career. Bar a terrible mishap, the dude's gonna be a HOF-Av until kingdom come. Much peace, brethren.

I think what gets lost almost universally in these discussions, because you can't quantify it, is impact on the game of hockey. It's absolutely a thing. I'm not the biggest Marchand fan, but to me he's a no doubt HOFer. Everyone knows him, knows what he does, what he's done, he's a legend of the game. For chrissakes, they just put Roenick in there, and you can say it's bogus, and I do say it's bogus, but somebody has to actually make these decisions and it is not quite as stats-and-hardware based as people think when they're making the arguments. There is an X factor of recognition, reputation, and just flat out impact on the game of hockey. That's the reality of who gets in and who doesn't. The flip side of it is Marleau - guy beats Gordie's record, he should've been first ballot on that alone, but 2/3 of the continent didn't really notice his career.
