Georges Méliès , a great admirer of Rudolf Erich Raspe's book, decides to pay homage to him by making a film version of it. In this film however, the director does not follow the original story, and he only borrows from it the main character: after a large meal the famous Baron goes to bed, but his sleep is disturbed by a series of dreams and hallucinations. In this film Méliès takes the opportunity to revive all of his old repertoire of tricks and special effects;
