History of the Handknitting Association of Iceland
The Handknitting Association of Iceland was founded in November of 1977. A few women, who had used knitting to supplement their families´income, decided to join forces and established an organization in order to facilitate more extensive marketing of their knitted products.
The initial members´ meeting was held in Reykjavík and was attended by close to 1.000. Active members are currently around 200.
The Association is housed at Skólavörðustígur 19, in the old city center of Reykjavík. Soon after the Association was established, a store was opened to sell members´ handknitted woollen goods. The store, which is also located at Skólavörðustígur 19, is a flourishing business in its own right. The Association now employs a staff of 4.

I was there last week and my mother and I both bought beautiful sweaters. It's a very nice store and the employees are very helpful. All of their sweaters are from Icelandic wool and made by Icelandic locals. I highly recommend visiting this place for anyone in Iceland interested in getting a sweater or other knitted goods.

A fantastic shop. I bought lovely Lopi jumpers, and lots af beautiful wool there last year. I am slowly knitting my way through all the wool and I hope to return in a year to replenish my stock.

Hand knitted in Iceland? Hahahaha These are mostly machine knitted and very simple designs, Not hand knitted. And not wool either. Who hand knits anything out of Plastic? Acrylic? Nobody

I’ve been to these shops and can honestly say that I haven’t seen one sweater made of anything but 100% wool. There may be a smaller selection off to the side that are machine-knit but they don’t look like these they won’t look like traditional Icelandic sweaters. Each of these sweaters will have a number on the tag indicating the person who knitted it.
