I don't like the way that they bring down Serena's character to just this evil, pissed woman, that wants nothing but a child. There are so many more layers to this character, and honestly she is an enigma to me on the show. I can't figure her out. She is trapped in the system she helped to create, but is she happy about it? It seems like yes and no. On the surface- she has been overcome with the desire to have a child, but deep down underneath, I can spot the sense that she actually hates this. I think the best storyline for her would be to join the resistance and then literally be torn between choosing freedom, and love for her husband, who would still be in support if Gillead. I think that would be fantastic action development for her, because I don't believe that all she is is this evil woman. She's far too smart for that, they need to show her life before Gillead, and how she REALLY came about supporting the system that has now trapped her in her own home. I need more Serena!
@kristinacintron91746 жыл бұрын
You answered your own question,: " the system she helped to create"
@Asoftenkameshee6 жыл бұрын
i really do not think i did though. just the fact that she helped create this system, doesn't mean that she was aware of the final results it was going to yield, which her husband and the rest of their gang were fully aware of. you can see this in the series, early on. in episode 6, in the movie theater: the sad look Fred gives her, after she says 'we are saving them' she believes it so blindly, and has a completely different idea of what Gilead was suppose to be, but Fred, already aware of the turn things were going to take, had to witness his wife live off of false hope, that a woman is more than just a ploy to keep the system going, on the overinflated egos of men. i think that deep inside, Serena knows what kind of shit she has gotten into- and i think it's portrayed so greatly in the series. in the scene where they just moved into the house, and she hangs up the blue dresses- still unaware of what was actually going on, and her husband, let her live in that delusion for at least the first couple of months. he knew, he knew everything. and at the begining he had the hope that his wife would pay a significant role in Gilead, but the desire of power has taken over him, and he lost all sight for his wife's intellect and even presence. i think that on the surface, she still tries to make it work, but deep, deep underneath- she knows she lives in hell.
@teabooks22916 жыл бұрын
She was the author of that system. She played a critical role and inarguably the most important role in making the Gilead society come to pass. You think her want of a child excuses her for sacrificing the entire society and every other woman's freedom? That's insane. She is an extremely selfish and odious character.
@Asoftenkameshee6 жыл бұрын
you really cannot see through her can you? look at the facial expressions, the amount of pain beneath the steel facade she has created. i am not saying she is innocent- but i am saying that she was tricked into thinking she played an important role- i truly believe that her isolation inside the 4 walls of her fancy home- was not something anticipated. and no, she was not the author of the system. the men were- if you forgot. and no, she did not play the most important role- they wouldnt even let her speak at the gatherings about law formations and security issues. have you even watched the series? the significance of her not being able to speak in security measures- that is a direct proof that she had no idea she would end up in a society where a woman's walk with a pram is surrounded by armed men. the sole fact that we never actually got to hear what she was going to say,( and what one of the men said after she left the corridor, about women forgetting their real purpose- that was said in her absence. just as her power and freedom were taken away by the men, in her absence) and the fact that she was frustrated that she couldnt speak- was just the begining of a fast process in which her power was taken away from her- and it pains her so much ,that she put the hope of at least a bit of a normal life, into a child. a child which she cannot have by herself so that adds even more pain. in the scene where she shouts at Offred, that pain is so visible- the desperation and frustration of her being locked inside of her own home. you must be blind not to see that. i am not saying that she doesn't believe in the system. i think that deep down, she knows the hell she has helped to create, but tries to make it work- for the sake of her own sanity. but i don't think she predicted the results of the regime- to be only beneficial towards men. in every.single.aspect. the men tricked her into obedience. they let her think she would play an important role in the creation of the regime- in order to make her obedient and suportive of the regime later on- after they would adjust it to their own preferences. she just realized it too late.
@teabooks22916 жыл бұрын
Joanna Wojtalik Are you insane?! She did play the most important role. She's the one that came up with all the ideas and even concinved her husband in doing the right thing every time he questioned moving forward. He even said, "you know we can't pull this off without the wives " or something to that effect. You want me to pity this woman because she didn't anticipate being treated like eveyone else? Like oh, I thought just EVERY OTHER WOMAN would lose their freedoms, not me. That's like feeling bad for Trump voters because they're sad they're losing the same coverage and rights as everyone else after voting for a man who ran on promises to screw other people over. Her self-inflicted pain is nothing compared to the pain the society SHE authored has subjected eveyone else to. If That's not obvious to you from episode one, there is seriously something off about your thinking. I wondered what kind of woman would allow herself to be a Gilead wife, I guess you're that kind of woman.

This show will be studied for years to come for capturing the spirit of the times...ie National library of Congress status, (along with this is America)....unbelievable show. Great art not only achieves aesthetic merit (mastery of craft/medium) but also forces people to evaluate human emotion and or the social political constructs surrounding the period or setting that is being examined in the piece...and this show has achieved that just as much as the Sopranos did in the early 00’s or picasso did with guernica...also this show extends the reach of the themes/motifs (dystopian sterile future) used and adds to them, in addition to being inspired by them, which is a huge plus.

Why is everyone htaing on Max Minghella? I don't get it. For chewing gum? Come on people. Or for being boring? What else is he supposed to do in a serious interview about a serious show. Humph.
@veggiesarefruits5 жыл бұрын
He's boring, both in and out of character. We have a right to say so. He has zero personality, and I'm shocked at the massive oversight they had when casting him. He says his character is in love with Offred, but you FEEL none of it--you just have to take his word for it. His lack of emotional range as an actor puts everyone around him on set on shaky ground. There is NO chemistry between Offred and Nick, and Nick is the biggest snoozer of an actor I've ever seen. Deal with it.
@keandric27655 жыл бұрын
@veggiesaremurder you Do have a right to say so, just like *I* have a right to disagree with you Completely. For 1), you don't actually Know him irl so just judging someone's personality based on an interview is really closed-minded. For all you know he hasn't done many and gets nervous, or even if he Has, he Still could get really nervous (which could explain the gum); or maybe he has social anxiety or something. Point being, you really Don't know because you don't actually Know him. 2) Nick as a character is Supposed to be very reserved (as well as playing the stoicism that Guardians are supposed to show AND is an Eye so he has to be silently observant and spying on everyone around him. I think he plays All of that it V well. 3) if you don't think there's no chemistry between Nick and June then you are watching a TOTALLY different show than I am.

But my god e things these poor women go through, it makes my blood boil to a point where I feel pure rage at every single episode , watching these monsters treating people this way. I can definitely see where they get their inspiration from. They address CURRENT events which are happening RIGHT NOW, like North Korea and it’s poor people, Muslim-driven states. Even scenes from Auschwitz were included. We’re all watching this ‘what if’ scenario, but this shit is happening right now!! And it sickens me.

What the hell are they cleaning up at the colonies exactly - just digging the ground? It doesn’t make any sense!!! Am I not getting something?! What’s there to do?

Dig solely for the sake of digging itself?? They couldn't think of something more exciting and useful for their utopian society members to do?

I think they're trying to clean up the pollution- or radiation-soaked lands. Something like that, anyways. If they can get rid of the crappy top layers, they should be able to reach more healthy, fertile soil underneath. Aunt Lydia mentioned all of the pollution and how they were trying to clean it up.

I believe the idea is hard useless labour in itself so to break them down. It all looks like just mud till you see the hot springs. But that just makes more sense they're trying to slowly torture the women. There is no sense in it, that's 'justice' to them.

I just started rewatching the series. It is so, so disturbing to watch. The acting, writing , directing is beyond brilliant. It still does scare the s**t out of me e.
