Money won't buy you happiness, but the lack of it can buy you misery. The law of diminishing returns applies here. Once you have enough money to provide for your daily needs, the amount of happiness that more money will give you becomes less and less. To illustrate: If you earn 15k a year and get a raise up to 40k a year, your happiness will increase a lot. Life will be easier. But if you earn 100k a year and your income jumps to 130k a year, your happiness won't increase very much at all. It won't have a lot of impact on your daily life, you already have all that you need. What the verse "money does not buy happiness" means is that we could earn a ridiculous amount of money and still be sad but we could have just enough money to live our life and we could still be happy. Happiness and money are two different things.
