I can really relate to your video. I'm a medical student in germany, and my ethnicity is persian so i look very much middle eastern. People mostly can't believe how someone like me can enter medical school and patients aren't even sure if i'm good enough compared to the blond students. In the beginning it really broke my heart and i felt really low compared to the other students, but after a while hearing negative comments and judgments ,you will get over it. it will make you stronger and more resistent towards stupidity. it's a hard way to go when people watch and criticise you more than other people, but it's worth it to prove the opposite. i wish you the best on your way.

@@JamesJoyce12 I'm in medical school and native- born and friends with Africans and I'll tell you they don't treat us the same in higher ed. Let's not say that we're whining and it's a lie without actually looking at the context of both sides.

This is not just in medical school - it is across many fields and professions - African-born Blacks outperform US-born Blacks and often times White Americans and you'll have to tell me the magical way that one can tell a US-born POC from an African POC other than asking to see their driver's license.

Working as a Nursing Assistant i have been in the position where other races don’t want you in the room with them or doing anything for them. I don’t let it bother me. They’re the ones that are there and needs assistance. I tell them that and let the nurse handle it. Don’t let them see that it bothers you keep a smile on your face and keep going

Hi Love, I'm currently in my third year pre med up north at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. I'm hoping to get into medical school early decision so I'm prepping this summer for MCAT and interviews. Your vlog series will be my motivational mantra for the rest of the summer. You are inspirational, brilliant and beautiful and I am proud that another Nigerian sister is making moves in the medical field. I am excited to see you graduate, complete your residency and become a full-fledged doc. Thank you for paving a path for folks like me. Keep your head high and keep strutting through it with grit and grace!

It's so strange to realise that people in medicine, people who've gone through such an intense journey to get where they are, wouldn't respect that everyone who is there is going through a similarly intense journey. It amazes me that divisions of race and gender survive a crucible like med school. Keep the fires burning!

I had the same visions as you, when I first started Medical school I thought that everyone was going to be accepting, humanist and fair people, but I soon realised that many of the ppl in my class were of elite, rich background with many having parents being doctors. Many of these ppl in my class saw medical school as the stepping stone to a lucrative career, rather than a calling and something more sacred.

It is so amazing to see a christian medical student here on KZbin. Thank you for sharing! God has definitely gotten me through the hardest parts of my life sofar as well and I'm trusting that if it is His will I will also be able to get into medical school next year. It is also so shocking to me that their is still discrimination between med students. If you can't even respect your peers how do you want to respect your patients?

Thank you for doing some introspection like you said! It's important to give people a chance. When certain people seem to be rude because of your ethnicity, never forget that it may not be what it looks like. Maybe they're having a difficult time personally, maybe they just plain don't like you because you're different than what they're used to. But I would totally believe you though if you're saying the comment or look is very obvious... Don't let it get you down, you're obviously mentally strong to be in this field. I kind of understand what it takes cause as a girl in mechanical engineering I have to make sure I don't start doubting my abilities and right to be here.

When I first went to college, I thought everyone would be a level above the b.s. in society. When I found out that wasn't the case.... that was pretty devastating. But after going through college and a few years of growing outside of school, I learned how to think about and deal with things like being disrespected because of my race. You'll get better at it too. It takes experience. Try to learn from those around you and those further along the way. Doing so can minimize how much you struggle through those experiences.

Very true. I definitely am learning a lot along the way. I know I'm being prepared for my life as a professional in the days to come. I know that I haven't seen the worst of it yet, so I learn while I can. Thank you for the encouragement!

Girl!!!! You hit the nail on the head with ALL of your points! As an African American woman too, I had very similar experiences and feelings during my time in pharmacy school. At times, I honestly don't know how I got through it all, especially since I took a rather non-traditional route to get there in the first place. I know for sure it was definitely not all my doing......without the help of the Lord above I would not have gotten through those very trying moments. Even though I am not in medical school, I truly enjoy watching your videos. They're wonderful! Good luck with school and all of your future endeavors! I know you can do it and I can't wait to see you at the finish line! = )

Great video , cant wait for part 2 ! :D It's unfortunate that these micro aggressions exist but, I think its something that we're gonna have to deal with and prove to people over and over again that we are no different and that we belong here. Also how do you know that through all the stress and emotional roller coaster that medicine is worth it? I'm currently stressing over a masters program and don't even know if i'll be able to survive medical school.
@BlackGirlWhiteCoat6 жыл бұрын
I know it's worth it because there's nothing else I can see myself doing, I know this is my calling, I know I am right where I am right now for a reason. I know in order to fulfill my purpose and live out my purpose, medical school is just something I have to go through. I have learned how to enjoy the process and the struggle by keeping sight of my goals. You will get through your masters program. You will persevere. So many people before you have survived, and I don't expect it to be any different with you. you got this! Thanks for watching!

The whole idea of going into the medical field is pretty daunting for me, mostly bc I have no one in my family whom has ever been in it. I have no one to show me the ropes. So in really struggling with what exactly to do...I'm going to Tuskegee uni this year and I don't really know what classes I'm supposed to take to go to medical school after college. My major is biology though, idk I guess I'll figure it out as I go

Amazing video girl! You nailed it with point number 4. It's very important to remain positive and optimistic especially when everything else around you turns upside down. It can definitely interfere with your academics. God, my mother and the rest of my support system gets me through the tough days! By the way, I have been playing Davido FIA for the last 2 weeks. I'm sooo addicted to that song...lol Continue to motivate and inspire girl on KZbin and IG! You're doing great! (aka pagingdrv on ig)

Please, please tell me you go to school in the South. Not that it makes Anything about how you're being treated better, but I am about to start medical school in DC, and if I find I'm faced with this bs there, that will not bode well with me at all. I've lived for 6 years already in the Northeast and feel blessed to not have experienced at least any overt prejudice, and I am not here for that to start now lol. I'm sorry it had to happen to you, but hang in there, and if you can, let it motivate you even. Great video, keep em coming!

So true...I worked in a hospital for over 12 years. I always wanted to be a nurse, until I started actually working with “nurses” Registered nurses to be more specific. The idea that nurses are super nice and so caring to “all” races, isn’t necessarily true. Sad, but so true.

May you stay annointed and may God prosper you in all aspects of your life. I'm in Behavior Science and people do make comments that stomp on your sense of worth. However, WE ARE CHILDREN OF GOD, AND IN JESUS CHRIST WE CAN DO ALL THINGS. God will use use us to change racist people's minds, they will see that their color and position in society means nothing one day, keep loving and looking to Jesus, that Man will never let you down.
