Fantastic review! The movie was phenomenal! The actors, the scenery, the costume, the lighting with the SOUNDTRACK on top of all that almost made me emotional. Especially knowing that these were actual people. Usually having a cast this stacked is a little risky, cause those movies aren't usually the best, but this one right here?...🔥New subscriber! Jonathan Majors BODIED the role. As did Lakeith Stanfield, Deon Cole, Damon Wayans Jr., Delroy Lindo, Idris Elba, Regina King was EVERYTHING. The way Nat Love and Stagecoach Mary literally had each other’s backs 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾. Agreed about Elba’s focused purpose and vision for Redwood and when the money got blown up it destroyed something withinin him and that ring he kept holding onto replaying his childhood trauma in his mind....deep.

I loved everthing about this movie! It's a crime Netflix didn't promote it more. The cast, the soundtrack, the story, the characters are all interesting, and the story is great. It's also so refreshing to have a black movie that isn't about race or black people suffering. People are just black and living their lives and the blackness is integral but incidental.

The first watch, I thought the music didn’t fit or was too loud. The second watch, I accepted that this is a all black cast and take on what a western by us should, could, would be but just is. It’s fantastic. During all the hurt and pain there was comedy to uplift. Great movie. I hope Netflix gives it more sequels, prequels or spin-offs.
@cipherklosenuf92423 жыл бұрын
Well said. This film touches trauma that echoed out of the civil war and into westward expansion. I’m white, so I know I’m tone deaf to a lot of the film’s voice because some of the music lyrics go over my head…whoosh. A viewer more familiar with the music might notice content that at first seems disconnected…where I just keep clapping along on the down beat. It sounds like you made some peace with it, sometimes what seems wrong is what it needs to be. (But NO…no clapping on the downbeat…. Oh please no. 😳). I hope that makes sense.

I totally agree with and respect your review, but I’m wondering if the pacing your picking up on at the end is due to Westerns not being your thing, because as a huge fan of Westerns that’s the part that reeled me in. There are so many subtle nods to previous Westerns that, for me, it was showing off how well the creators knew the genre. From the Dollars Trilogy to Blazing Saddles to Tombstone to Django to Open Range, this film gives subtle nods to other Westerns and I loved that part. For me, this is has shot up to one of my favorite Westerns of all time, if not my favorite. I honestly don’t know how a studio can make a Western after this one that isn’t influenced by it somehow. Really awesome review, I appreciate your analysis. I’m looking forward to your future reviews.

I watched it yesterday and agree with your review, but I think 5/5 is justifiable because the film leaves us wanting more back story, and more curious about the history beneath. I’m hoping Netflix’s will do a director’s cut with commentary posted that the viewer can pause and read. This film runs fast and flashy on the surface, Wild, intense but also fun viewing, beneath that, it runs really deep. A canyon of sorrows flooded with passion, resilience and color.

Elliott I dug your balanced review as always. I saw it on the silver screen tonight . It was very entertaining with substantial style swag. Secondly, the cinematography was so fire and intimate with it’s use of ECU’s and CU’s. Thirdly, it had some very touching moments. Unlike you, I loved the chemistry between Mary and Nat. Can we talk about the humor and aesthetic of the “White town”? 😂 Overall, the acting was grounded and strong. Lastly, I wish they explored the romantic chemistry between Idris and Regina. One more thing, some of the phrasing and language seemed too modern.

I thought this movie was amazing. Number one it was incredibly beautiful. Whoever the cinematographer on this was she get an award. I thought the cast was amazing of course. They did the classic Western tropes that's not necessarily a bad thing in fact I think they did it in a more modern tone. This was just a fun movie to watch. Lakeith Stanfield was amazing as Cherokee bill period with a cast like that he was absolutely a standout. People want to call this a black Western I don't particularly like that. It's a western with a mostly Black cast. Anyone no matter what ethnic group there are part of can watch this movie and enjoy it I sure did. Now I do realize as a black man but a lot of the history involving black people in the old west with left out of the narrative. Overall it was just a wonderful movie

I liked it . I'm an avid Western genre fan having watched 1000ss of hours of westerns it's my favorite genre . Im not a fan of the satire western or comedy westerns that being said . Pros : #1 I found this to be a very funny satire comedy western . #2 The acting was phenomenal . #3 sets were decent . #4 Definitely Worth watching . Cons: #1 They are promoting this as a western action adventure which it was in my opinion a satire western action comedy . #2 Very comical and campy almost to the point of Ridiculousness. #3 most of the music in the film just doesn't fit the genre . ( and i liked most of the music but still not the proper genre ) #4 The use of nowaday slang/curse words was silly and didnt fit the genre . Verdict : All in all a fun watch definitely worth watching tho they toke alot of liberty with the genre. It won't be anything id watch more than once .
@lykos27383 жыл бұрын
It wasn't "Tombstone good" but it was fun. I liked the fact that they included Bass Reeves (one of the greatest lawmen of the old west and a historic total badass. Seriously, he's up there with Earp) but disappointed on how they used him. I can't believe they cheated us out of the duel between Beckworth and Cherokee Bill. Like all that build up for nothing. They literally went "let's do the exact opposite of Doc Holiday and Johnny Ringo". Unbelievable.
@cipherklosenuf92423 жыл бұрын
I understand what you’re saying, but I think the comedy and music serve a purpose that contributes to the experience and the message. (These. People. Existed. ) For example, the Whitewashed town and the Colored town, that was satirical…funny, weird and very true. It mocks the whitewashing of westerns with an image so outrageous and ridiculously blatant that only the truly colorblind could miss it. Clever, cinematic and the plot just carries on.

Just watched, and I'm really sad to say it disappointed me. Way too much focus on style over substance. It looked great from a cinematography aspect,, but it left me feeling absolutely no connection to the characters or the stakes involved. After a while I just wasn't engaged. Even the action scenes were lackluster and void of intensity to me. Overall the focus was more on bright colors, tricky camera angles, quick edits and the music selection than actual good storytelling. It's a real missed oppurtunity by the writer/director to me, because with THAT super talented cast, that could have been a classic.

An aspect of classic westerns is good guys vs. bad guys. The Vietnam War and civil rights movement seriously challenged that and introducing more moral complexity, but most viewers of Westerns expect to know who the good guy is, even if he’s deeply troubled or struggling or flawed. In this film there’s a lot of moral ambiguity from beginning to end. There is choreographed violence and blunt violence. I liked how it grappled with trauma and the internal conflicts, dysfunctions and pathos. Maintaining ambiguity was necessary to these themes. “Did you kill the devil?”…”I don’t know.”
@suade9253 жыл бұрын
@@cipherklosenuf9242 the repeated "devil" line was just heavy handed writing and it began to annoy me after the first few times. It was used like a blunt object over our heads. We GET IT. The gunfights had absolutely no weight to them to me because the director focused so much on stylization, and the deaths didn't impact me at all because there wasn't any good character buildup beforehand. Whole film was just poorly executed from a storytelling aspect to me.

I’m currently watching it I’m not into this Brotha. They using real black figures to tell a story about people committing treason on our community. Not only that the clearly fake accents throw me off too.

@@MovieFiles It was alright. I don’t like them playing wit our ancestors and making things up. It wasn’t bad tho, it’s better than most things we got for sure. A lot less agendas. But agai. This another movie where the militant person trying to liberate his people was portrayed as a villain. That stagecoach Mary casting was the most jarring offense. So yea, not wit this thing👎🏾.

This movie is stupid and Regina King needs to study and read about history instead of making movies based off of stupid fantasy and Democratic bias.

As you know, much of what would have been written by black women and about black women was never recorded because of…Freedom…denied. When did black women finally achieve the vote in Texas? How did that happen? Why did freedom take such a long time coming? As you know, there’s plenty to read about why and how freedom was denied.

This film was a 1.5 out of 5. It felt like a stage play and not like an actual film. This was the most sanitized version of the old west that I've seen. It was very cosplayish and did not require the long run time.

I agree this was terrible.

Sanitized version? I’m really curious what do you mean?
@06dking3 жыл бұрын
@@cipherklosenuf9242 sanitized as in very clean. The actors and settings did not project any realism or authenticity. This is due to combination of the style of acting, costumes, cheap looking sets/green screen. This would be alright for a play but it plays terribly on film.

@@06dking I get your point; no sweaty horses, no bad shaves. I enjoyed it like a Martial Arts film, stylized, epic drama. But, the main characters were inspired by real people. Perhaps there will be other productions that look more closely at the lives of these amazing Americans and interpret their lives more realistically.

@@cipherklosenuf9242 i understand where you're coming from. This film this was style over substance. However the style of this film to me was kinda of cosplayish and was more like a music video than an actual film. I'm sure that may have been their intent and I'm just not a fan of that style.
