I am honestly happy to read that so many others liked this movie. I just finished watching it and loved it. It has style for miles. The characters are great. The cast is great. The music is great. The dialogue and action never felt campy or cheesy. The violence was forceful and frequent, but not gory or excessive. The emotional force of the ending is satisfying and I was caught up in the movie well enough to not see it coming. Keep in mind westerns are usually stylized and heightened forms of reality, sometimes veering off into legend. There's nothing practical about a duel at high noon. It's ritual. There's a destiny at the end of a path to be followed. That's one reason why the good guy moves openly through enemy territory towards a climax.

Zazzie Beats character didn't think no one would recognize her, she knew exactly what could happen. She was taken a chance that her money was more important and Elbas character would look past her affiliation! that being said, to be so animated and emphatic about your dislike smh... b/c Zemo walking into a SHIELD black site with nothing but a pair of glasses and a name badge, and getting access to the worlds most dangerous assassin who could be triggered by a couple words apparently didn't make that film garbage. This movie was so entertaining, and the performances were all outstanding. The soundtrack was stellar!

Zazie character went into town b/c she could openly. She had literally no reason to hide and this was said in the scene prior, that he's explaining. She also had a legitimate reason and back story as to why she could simply walk into town. What it sounds like to me is, you guys watched the movie but were talking through it and missing points to the story. Now they took her rifle b/c that was a regular occurance especially when entering someone's establishment which was covered earlier in the film on multiple occasions. When she got to Idris character, she made an offer relating to a major purchase b/c he was short on money. It was at that point she messed up, b/c he questioned how she knew about the stolen money that went missing in the beginning of the film. He puts 2 and 2 together and based on his signal to his crew, (if you were paying attention) she then got knocked out. This movie is one you have to give your attention to b/c of the nuisances throughout, the signals and gestures used are missed if you're socially watching the film and missing things due to habit and preconceived expectations. This movie throws the most curve balls I've seen in a long time. The next scene where Johnathan Majors character goes into town openly does make sense. The reason he was able to do so openly had 2 reasons. 1 he was with the Sheriff. 2 he had Idris money or the whereabouts of it. Now just a bit of insight in to black culture specifically in the US. That whole scene when Zazie is telling Johnathan character what she's going to do. Being hard headed, happens on the regular in our community. Tie that scene into the final scene where they are getting on their horse's is literally a reflection of black relationships today. Black women business owners and their men trying to catch up, get a bullet in your shoulder or your face playing a heroes race. The walk into town was also a smoke screen to put his men in place without being seen (the Sniper) That's the first part explained that I disagree with b/c it made since to me and many ppl who watched that were paying attention that I spoke to after the film. The 2nd part you pointed out, says you sorta don't know your history on old western towns. It's called a "Western false front architecture" or "False front commercial architecture". Showing it, the false side is perfectly ok or the opposite side. That also a parallel today with social media, dudes in fancy cars and clothes they can't afford, rented cars in rap videos, etc. You're COMPLETELY inaccurate on that. It was used in the real world as a front for businesses to show stability in the town. The towns are projecting a sense of success they don't actually have. It was to show prosperity so when travelers come into town they spend money with that town. That also was explained, not in detail but it was explained during the scene where Idris character took over, showing the people their corrupt leadership. If I'm not mistaken, you see that in 3:10 Yuma as well and I wouldn't doubt it's shown in other westerns. I know it was in Once Upon A Time in Hollywood which obviously had different perspective and was based in a behind the scenes shot to tell the story of an actor. Cabin in the Sky from the 1940s had that.

She also had a legitimate reason and back story as to why she could simply walk into town."_* 🎯 *EXACTO* ❗ I've mentioned the same. "Stagecoach Mary" detailed her intent to Nat as they stood overlooking Redwood from a distance. Nat even unsuccessfully attempted to have Mary reconsider what she was attempting to do -- and when her ruse comes apart in the presence of Rufus Buck _(with his questioning of her sudden appearance in town)_ , that also made sense. Another point was that of Nat entering Redwood with Deputy U.S. Marshal Bass Reeves in collusion with him, hoping to get Mary and possibly even have his cohorts confront the Rufus Buck gang. As Nat's entourage slowly went down that main street in Redwood (law officer at their side) , they even had Bill Pickett positioned to protect them as a lookout/sniper (sharp-shooter).

I agree with his review: The cast and costumes are great! But the plot fell off the hinges after they rescued Idris’ character. By comparison, the Magnificent Seven with Denzel was done waaaay better. And I’m saying this from a plot standpoint. You could’ve replaced the cast in Magnificent Seven with the same Cast in the Harder They Fall and Magnificent Seven would be better. Like he saying: that made no sense for Stagecoach Mary to ride into town lmao. And the scream Zaza let out was sexist?

Love ya, John. Totally agree that reviews are subjective. We’re usually on the same page; but man, I feel like you watched a completely different film. Aside from a few minor plot and editing issues, I thought the overall direction, score, and acting were fantastic. Also, not to get pedantic, but this didn’t strike me as a Tarantino knockoff - it definitely took inspiration from Leone films (which Tarantino pulls liberally from), but otherwise has its own flavor. So yeah, I love this film. Jeymes Samuel is a force to be reckoned with, and I’m eagerly awaiting his next pic!

It’s not a new story. They are not new beats. But it was bad ass. Honestly this might be the very first western I’ve ever seen from beginning to end. They always gave me “colonizer” vibes. Definitely wasn’t Django! wow the only thing they nailed in this movie was the cast and their costumes. The dialogue between characters sounded made up. The director isn’t from America and it shows in the dialogue. “Negro?” was that even a term used then. I thought that term came about in the Harlem Renaissance? just saying. I could’ve appreciated the songs played if they didn’t have vocals attached to them. I found myself asking, is that Lauren Hill? Is that JayZ; and you shouldn’t be concerned with musical artist when watching “a movie.” Also, like he said that plots were dumb. It was solid all the way up until after they rescued Idris’ character. The plot twist at the end was great too.

This dude obviously wasn’t listening to the dialogue in the movie because Nat and Mary said they were WELL AWARE that she would be recognized. That’s why he didn’t want her to go and they argued. She thought she could go in there and pretend to be there to buy the saloon and they not suspect her connection to Nat but Rufus saw through her. Plus they already knew from the former sheriff that they were out gunned. Yes they went in there after and got their asses kicked but they knew Rufus wasn’t going to kill them on spot because he was desperate for the money they stole so that’s how they could find out what he wanted in exchange for Mary. That’s why Rufus told them they had to rob the bank to get Mary back. Now after they had the cash Rufus was desperate for which is leverage AND the former sheriff got them extra ammo and explosives then they went in with a plan. Perhaps you are not used to the dialect which was Southern/Western. You sound Yankee and not like someone who uses phrases like “fixin’ to”.

@Welcome 007 Your opinion is your opinion _(weakly formulated or not),_ but the thing is *_this Campea guy is straight misleading listeners/viewers with inaccuracies at best, or at times lying at worst._* I've seen the movie twice in theater settings. At no point is there a facade with the rear support beams or rear support structure visible. Zero. Why he would use his platform to tell listeners/viewers that is not for me to unearth. And he even says the supporting material behind a facade is visible multiple times (at some point with Delroy Lindo in the shot). *Lies.* And someone - with a role like Campea's - who gives you inaccurate re-tellings, you question their credibility. You certainly question the credibility of those with such a role who straight-out lie. Before the facade support misinformation, Campea misrepresents a couple of sequences involving the Mary character (Zazie Beetz) and the character's stated plan & rationale for going into Redwood _(for recon, to find out where outlaw leader Rufus Buck/Idris Elba is, how many men Buck has, etc.)._ What Campea says is not something that the characters don't question or say themselves. Stagecoach Mary's "popularity" (and ownership of multiple saloon businesses) is something she hopes to use as a ruse to safely get into the town, propose to buy property from Buck (who is known to need money to off-set the possible loss of the settlement town), and obtain reconnaissance info. for her cohorts (Nat Love's "gang"in collusion with Deputy U.S. Marshal Bass Reeves). However, because Rufus Buck immediately sees right through Mary's ruse (for reasons he explain) the "absurdity" of her "plan" is even called out in the dialogue of the script - by outlaw Rufus Buck. Campea isn't saying anything novel there. Then, with Mary is held captive and sat out on the town's main strip as a _"damsel in distress"_ , the script further plays on that Western trope by having her lover (Nat Love and cohorts) come into the town to try to rescue her. As Mary had discussed earlier with Love -- and the reasons behind her failed ruse, Love's group has no info. on Bucks exact location in the town, they knew they'd be immediately recognized upon arrival in the town, they have no info. on the exact number of men the Buck gang has increased to... But their plan was to position Bill Pickett (sharpshooter/sniper throughout the movie) to provide cover while they somehow rescued Mary. None of that works out for Love (admonished for his rashness), he is captured and held alongside Mary, and Buck then uses Mary as leverage to coerce Love into robbing a bank. *_'The Harder They Fall'_* is a Western in the tradition of general Westerns. It isn't trying to display the level of detail of some peak-era Tom Clancy novel or Jason Bourne movie, or be some flawlessly air-tight military operations movie. It is a Western (and fun entertainment at that), yet still viewers can tell that the script writers put thought into the story-beats, reasoning, and character motivations throughout the movie. Your opinion is your opinion (weakly formulated or not). I don't care if Campea doesn't like the movie or not, but _I was bewildered by how someone with a platform like this and role as a "movie critic/reviewer" would adamantly put forth such incorrect misinformation to his audience._ *In this instance, Campea is misleading listeners/viewers with inaccuracies at best, or at times lying at worst.*

John I have always had respect for your opinion. But honestly this movie is really good. Not only were way off on your opinion but the rotten tomatoes score went up to 87%. This movie is not with out it flaws the ending to me could have been better. There is more good than bad. The lack of a plan may be used to resemble what real life is like not everyone always has a plan. I didn't see the back of the facade even it did happen the movie itself made up for that by allowing the set to be its own charter. The town of Redwood City where the "colored folks" lived was rich with texture and colors. Even the seen where Trudy and Mary fought was a textile dye factory. The contrast was blatant in the neighboring "White Town" everything was painted white. I do not understand what movie you watched but this film will be a classic Black households. U may not have liked the film but it deserved a better review than what U had to say. It was far from terrible. I hope U revisit your review of the this art. It was just sad to hear U give praise to all the actors in the film before you ripped into the movie the way U did. It was a proud moment to see our real historical figures placed into this fictional heroic adventure.

Saw this on netflix last night. SO much fun!! I didn't expect to laugh as much as I did! The cast is pure amazement! every single character is so charismatic and looks SO good. I love the cinematography as it's so stylish. The music is so effective - every single song is so well used to help tell the story. The story is simple to follow but i still find it a very enjoyable movie. The middle is a bit dragged out but overall, I like it!

Wooow. I saw this movie and thought it was AMAZING and one of the best things on Netflix. It's so funny because while John didn't like this, he loved Venom 2. I have no idea as to how to make sense of this. I know movies are subjective but sheesh. 😅 This movie has Django vibes and the cast carried it more than anything. You won't even care about the plot because there's plenty of action to keep you entertained.

I just finished watching this movie. I should’ve known better but I had almost written the movie off - had decided I wasn’t going to watch it - based in part on John’s negative review. I say I should’ve known better because usually John’s taste in movies is drastically different from mine. Maybe because the trailer didn’t really do much for me anyway, this time I took John’s word for it and decided to pass on the movie. Thankfully after seeing Regina King do some promo I decided to go ahead and check the movie out and what do you know? From the get-go I found myself interested and intrigued and I can say that I really enjoyed the movie. Were there some issues with the plot, the storytelling, some of the character choices? Imo, yes - maybe that’s where I can agree with John - but they weren’t big enough to detract from everything that worked. So I would say if you’ve been avoiding the movie like I did for a while, rethink it and give it a watch; it’s actually excellent: stylish, well directed, has an amazing cast, and is well worth watching.

To be quite honest my baseline reaction when it comes to my people achieving anything, as small as it may be. Is to congratulate them! Because we have a lot of catching up to do (For obvious reasons) So absolutely it is a race thing, and black people need to get on code about backing up and fully supporting their people because lord knows no one else will. We have experienced criticism, we are used to negativity. We live in it from the day we are born, so ANYTHING that resembles achievement is to be celebrated. This movie was great, it had that flavor that only our people can bring, the characters had swagger, music was on point! I don't like westerns but I liked this one, just like I liked men in black. Because black leads and casts are refreshing... Couldn't give one cent if the building was made of cardboard and being held together with dental floss. WELL DONE cast and crew! Go watch the film, put money in black peoples pockets and keep getting better.

Tarantino bites scenes, shots, and music cues from John Ford, Sergio Leone, Howard Hawks, and Sam Peckinpah, these 2 fawn over it. Newsflash: Jeymes Samuel is a huge fan of classic westerns. On top of homages to those directors, he even gives a set design shoutout to Clint Eastwood’s directing. Yet he’s ripping off Tarantino? John, it is possible for a black filmmaker to have a knowledge of westerns that aren’t drawn through the Quentin filter.

You went on and on for 10 minutes but couldn't explain any real reason except "no emotional weight" in a western?? It's rare to have original stories in Hollywood and you neglected to mention why this movie is important - it shows the strength of women and minorities in the west (all these characters are based on real life) which is history not many of us know about. Tell me which western has emotional weight, especially anything Tarantino does? This was incredibly well shot, soundtrack was modern for a western theme and yet it fit perfectly. All characters were well acted with depth and charisma. Director freely admits Tarantino/Spike Lee influences, but it is much more focused/faster paced with better characters and tighter dialogue imo. Every frame is a piece of art and it serves the story instead of being over stylised to the point of distraction/self indulgence like Tarantino can be. I usually agree with John but he is wrong on this one. Watch it, it's great fun!

Loved the violence that I wasn't expecting. I can see people not like the story much. I actually got confused a few times at why they were at places and what exactly were they doing that. However, I didn't really care because the movie was so fun. At times I didn't know stuff I did know there was killing going on and that was fun. I would give the move 8 out of 10. I'm not really big on westerns. True Grit was better both the remake and the original. About on par with Jango. Not as good as the man with no name movies. About the same as Unforgiven.

I noticed this movie is so lazy they don't wanna tell you what is going on and you are supposed to imagine the storyline. They think you are stupid.
