It did not have the desired affect on me that I think Liam intended. I started watching one piece when I got stuck on a Night Shift at my job unexpectedly. All of the sudden I had a massive amount of time spent alone. The playlists formed by the encyclopedic type content that GLR produced, gave me something to listen to in the background, and made me feel like I wasn’t alone. They benefited my mental health immensely, It also bridged me into the OP community. I set a goal of catching up on OP by the time I got off of my Night Shift, which I did. I am loyal to Liam because of that kind of content, so when it played it made me miss the old days… 😢

@@parkerelliott5125 I used to do a lot of paperwork and filing in my old job (physical filing and paperwork, as in boxes full of pages stacked on one another) and I ALWAYS put something in the background just to make some noise. Liam's One Piece 101 made that list all the time.

I find these sorts of behind the scenes quabbles really interesting to hear you talk about, as I've also found myself locked into numerous very long-running series where the same exact problem crops up (some videos are obvious hits, like Luffy in your case, while others attract nowhere near as much attention). In my case, they are at least completely evergreen, so I don't need to worry about redoing them at a later date 😅 Haven't been following you for long, so I don't have the same attachment to your older content as some other people here, but I can very much relate to how hard it is to just cut content. 😬 Insightful as always! 👍

One of the reasons I have such a soft spot for OG GLR (anything pre-2021) is because I used your videos, and more important your voice, as a comfort fix. During the pandemic in 2020, I was catching up on One Piece. I was also in school, so I would log off Zoom every afternoon, then grab a snack, and watch a GLR video. And man... Those playlists like One Piece 101, DF Encyclopedia, and my favorite- One Piece Discussions, I used to binge those over and over, sometimes rewatch the same video again every now and then. It was so consistent that it got to the point where just hearing your voice (especially your old monochromatic voice) was enough to male me hungry. In a Pavlovian Conditioning kinda way haha. Still kinda does. And similarly, I still open up those old playlists when I'm into One Piece and have a snack, because the sheer comfort those videos provide is something truly unique, even if I have watched them over and over. THAT was evergreen. Nowadays, while I still like GLR, the new videos definitely feel like disposable quick fixes strecthed to 10 minutes, and not chill, endlessly informative and entertaining videos that will last literal years. But at the end of the day Liam does consider this more of a business (I mean he kinda has to) which means whatever gets views gets made. Even if he has to resort to terrible high contrast clickbaity thumbnails and ultimately substance-lacking short videos for his core daily audience. There's a reason I stopped watching current GLR, (and unsubscribed so I dont become an empty subscriber) but there has never been a point where I haven't opened up the old playlists for some good ol' One Piece uploaded straight into my KZbin feed. :,)

I've been watching GLR for a while now. It's honestly been probably 5 years now. Back then I subscribed because I could use your videos to fall asleep too. I liked your voice and getting to know the series in a way I never thought about. All the detail you put into your scripts were outstanding and I wanted to know that knowledge. I spent like 4 months just listening to your recap of each arc in the series on repeat. I've seen the change until then and it's still good. I love your comedy and humor. Also I can relate to you with all the social anxiety and stuff. Your are an amazing creator and I'm so proud to say that I am part of this channel. Hey Liam. For me, the 101 series made me know your channel. I had a break of years in the middle of One Piece, and years after it was very difficult to resume. So I started looking for some little info on One Piece and you were there. I can really say that you put me back on the One Piece fandom. But... That time I wasn't engaged in KZbin content. I just used to look to one or other info and close it. I wasn't subscribed to even one channel. 4:18 So when you said about personality, my view is the opposite. When you started putting your personality in your videos, that was what engaged me. In your channel and in KZbin. I don't remember if you're the first channel I have subscribed, but certainly was one of the firsts. And with that I started being captivated by following some people instead of just searching for specific content. You can never satisfy everyone, but I really appreciate your work and evolving! Keep going with what you feel is right!

Hooooolly damn, that last clip just "hit me right on the nostalgia balls", rly licked it, and am still really missing DF encyclopedia, I watched that entire playlist 2 to 3 times while working and really enjoyed, but can't lie and say I haven't enjoyed the latest content either, I truly believe there must be a balance between what the creator wants to do and what his audience wants to see, so even though I might miss that damn playlist, I completely understand it and won't leave just because of that (have said some time ago in one of the 101 videos that your way of speaking, interacting and telling a story from another character's point of view is just great and I really enjoy it), so that's for sure that I'll be here for the rest of the ride 🙏👍

I started watching One Piece on a whim, but I think one thing that kept me so engaged was the original 101 videos. I had been going through some tough things back then, so it was hard for me to fully remember the finer details the series had to offer. I credit Mr. GrandLineReview for my continued love for One Piece back then. But now I can’t really imagine watching a 101 video. They’re very information heavy and other than maybe one or two things I missed, I already know what’s in them before watching. I actually remember fondly the first and second Luffy vs Katakuri videos because Liam (Mr. GrandLineReview) made an effort to explain why he liked the fight so much and why it was important for Luffy and One Piece. Liam adding that extra bit of personality made me stay subbed to the channel, so I think his decisions about adding more of him to his videos was the best decision he made for his channel. Now where the heck is my Poké Mart? Jkjk

This is an interesting perspective because one of the better Bleach youtube creators right now leans heavily on character retrospectives, which he rotates in and out with other content. It could just be timing for him, as he's about 80% done with them as the anime rereleased, and he started them years prior to the announcement, but I think they can be done decently, but they likely need a different format in a still ongoing series such as arc by arc. At the same time though, it seems important to have recent content too. Retrospectives and primers seem best served as just a funnel to get the viewer into the current series and your videos.

I feel like a better solution to that 101 (x.0) format would just be to make a 102 appending series, picking up where the previous video left off and adding what is new, and only doing that maybe once every two or three years. That becomes it's own form of mess, but it would be a cleaner method if you ever revisit that format in any way, or if anyone reading this wants to do that sort of format for an ongoing series.

I am also one who joined the grand fleet in the later years, and going through your older content was fun. If you feel like you want to evolve, I support, but for those new members to thefleet, perhaps creating another channel of the oldies, a Grand Line Archives or something that doesn't house your new content, but stores the old hits for those curious mind-brains.

As someone who discovered you during your One Piece 101/DF Encyclopedia days, I can say I enjoy your content a lot more as a person who's been keeping up with One Piece and seeing more discussion on current moments than what happened prior. Now like you said, One Piece is still ongoing so there's still plenty of content to come (Even though in the grand scheme of the series it's getting close to ending, that's still at least another 3-4 years of story at least) I think it would be cool to bring back the series once it comes to a close as a full encyclopedia, but I can't blame you if you can't due to copyright.

I honestly saw OP 101 and the encyclopedia as a “here’s a starting point” for new viewers. I don’t think they really need updating when you look at it from that perspective. If I started watching OP today and I had an idea of the next arc’s details I’d be pretty ready to watch the whole series and commit to it.

I still miss devil fruit encyclopedia. You added theories and pretty interesting unique analysis on each fruit. I hope you update your very few out of date ones and finish the series at some point. I honestly couldn’t care less about one piece 101.

Your 101 series did get me into your videos for sure if I am being honest and I've been a fan of your work ever since. I find your videos a great way to enjoy one piece and keep up with my friends who read it and stay on topic with them as I often have little time to read the manga between work, studying and family life. And yes I do read the chapters as well and buy the manga as i believe everyone, including you, tells me that it is not a substitute for the real thing. You should consider re-releasing your videos from before as a sort of historic archive of past works. Or maybe even a series of videos just talking about the old days, what you thought and how you have grown from where you where to where you are now in terms of making videos or even how far characters have gotten in one piece. Honestly I'd even be game for a sort of video explaining old theories and why we thought this or that and what happened after theories were proven right or wrong. Either way whatever you do I look forward to see you there

Grand Line review and Tekking101 videos got me to catch up to the anime and manga. Some people might think it's blasphemous that I skipped a lot of whole cake island in the beginning and I skipped a lot of Wano. It just felt boring to me but your videos got me interested in the background characters. So I eventually read all the way through and watched the anime without skipping. All thanks to your devil fruit encyclopedia and one piece 101.

To be brutally honest, I really liked the old One Piece 101 videos, however this channel is constantly changing format and I'm always along for the ride

I discovered your channel by the one piece 101 videos. But the evolution you've done is excellent in my opinion.

I still remember when you started the stand encyclopedia for JoJos - right around the time I had started binging all of JoJos, and then I didn't see them anymore and remember wondering what happened to that series, so this is very enlightening. I'm glad you have evolved with the platform, and look forward to your videos when they drop.

Pretty sure if those are anywhere it would be on New World Review which is his channel for other anime like hunterxhunter, jojos and others.

@@technodragon990 yes! I actually was subscribed to nwr before glr because of hxh, the issue was not that I couldn't find them, it was that he stopped making them, likely for the same reason he stopped making op related encyclopedias videos. That and the algorithm changed around 2017 to prefer longer video formats.

The one piece 101’s is what got me into one piece to begin with.. I remember finishing HxH anime and found your NewWorldReview channel to learn about the dark continent (it blew my mind when I first saw it) .. but ended up finding grandline review in the process

I always said OP was too long but your OP 101’s got me so interested in the story that I had to watch it from the beginning to make sure I’m not missing anything
