You could use Freeze on Garuda, to stop feathers spreading and hitting rocks. You had to precast it so it landed just when they spawned, but it gave party small window to hit them with AoE. That was only usefullness. You could use it on group of mobs if you needed to stop them, like in emergency situations, but with that cast time it wasnt best option. Unlike Sleep, ranged mobs would still hit you.

Playing as Black Mage these past 3 days, I was on the edge of quitting that job due to how complicated and unrewarding the job feels but people say to keep playing it until lvl 60 at least... I swear the moment I got Fire IV skill, the job feels really good, satisfying to play. that Boom Boom critical damage is so majestic. :D

This is really interesting! I've played FF14 at three different times, during ARR, during Shadowbringers, and then now after the release of Endwalker, and the jobs I've played all felt different every time. This series would be interesting to see exactly what the differences were between expansions and patches that are harder to notice (I remember being sad that cross actions were gone when I came back to the game lol).

As I started in Stormblood myself, I never actually got to experience Cross Class Actions myself, but all the research I have done into it makes me understand why it was scrapped eventually -- for MOST jobs, it was just a tedious detail, and hardly changed anything for them. For others, it was mandatory to level multiple jobs just because of the Cross Class Actions (Taunt being exclusive to one tank for example!) Role Actions being as toned down as they are however, is abit more of a let down for me 😊

@@CaetsuChaijiCh Oh yeah they were pretty bad except I mained Bard and Blk Mage so I was very bummed that I no longer had Raging Strikes xD pretty sure there was another skill that did the same thing at a lower percent increase too, or something that functionally did the same thing. I'm glad they removed it though, it was a hassle unlocking all of them, especially when back then EXP gain was so so so much slower.

Changes coming to BLM in Dawntrail: - New gauge, that fills with every Fire IV cast. When you have 6 of them, unleash a new fire spell. - Ley Lines can now be moved to the player's position, instead of player returning to their position. - 3 polyglots. - I'm guessing Thunder IV changes into High Thunder IV. - Manafont also changes. Did I miss anything?

We will probably only know for sure what everything is once it is released 😁 To the first point, flare also gives 3 things for the gauge, so two of them also leads to the new fire spell. Whether despair adds anything we do not yet know 😊

@@GarnetDust24 Thank you! I don't think there is a particular reason. Just that they decided to go with 1,2,3,4 instead It isn't the only place where English specifically is the stand out weird one! Like O11 (Omega) where the Larboard and Starboard mechanic is pretty much just "left and right" in all other languages

​@CaetsuChaijiCh I think there's a book in the Hard version of Great Gubal Library that actually explains this in terms of the lore reason. Turns out the Amdapori White Mages were unsure what suffix to use for the fourth level Cure spell, so they simply called it "Cure IV", and went along with it. I wonder what that book reads in the Japanese translation 🤔

Interestingly, despite red mage being from just stormblood, had enough changes that it worked significantly different when it was new! 😁

Nice video! Some corrections & additions: - It's possible there was some time in ARR where Thunder dots stacked, but by the time I started playing (2.4) this was not the case. You would strictly use Thunder 1 to reapply if you had no proc, and Thunder 3 otherwise. Thunder 2 only really existed for leveling, traits didn't auto-upgrade skills back then so you kinda just took it off your hotbar. - I'm not sure about ARR, but in HW the way piety helped was allowing you to cast Thunder I in ice stance without relying on mana ticks. Back then, if you didn't get a proc you would refresh Thunder with T1 in ice stance, but if you didn't get a mana tick between casting T1 and swapping to Fire, you wouldn't have enough mana to do the standard 2xF4, F1, 2xF4 rotation. The best solution was to either play a Dunesfolk Lalafell or meld a piety materia. - Int materia was meldable in theory, but in practice all BLM gear had max int already, so it couldn't be melded (similar to how a piece with high crit can't have crit melded onto it these days) - AF & UI have always halved the cast times for opposite spells at 3 stacks. - Firestarter procs these days happen slightly before the GCD is over, allowing you to use them instantly in ARR content, but back then the proc didn't get applied until your Fire 1 hit the target, meaning you'd be half way through your next F1 cast and a lot of procs got wasted. - I believe Aetherial Manipulation had a significantly slower animation at some point, but I could be wrong on this one. - In StB, Thunder IV proc* was your strongest AoE spell by a significant margin, so large AoE packs consisted of spamming a lot of T4.

Thank you for the additions! Some corrections of my own then! - I agree it makes sense that you would just use T1 and then apply the procs for T3, since you rarely would have enough time to apply multiple DoTs anyway. So to circumvent the fact that T3 took ages to cast, and cost more, simply using T1 was easier. - Indeed, Piety was a bit of a strange thing back then. This is also why early in the video I bring up Dunesfolk Lalafells when talking about how Piety works! - Before Shadowbringers, Accessories (Earrings, Necklaces, Bracelets and Rings) *never* had any primary attributes on them, such as INT. Which meant they had space for INT Materia. Armor and weapons always came fully maxed out on the attribute though. So you are partly correct This was removed in Shadowbringers as an option simply because... There was never a reason not to meld attributes if you could, so it wasn't very engaging! All Accessories were retroactively changed to have attributes on them with the release of Shadowbringers. - I am unable to check whether the half cast time was the case in ARR or Heavensward, so I will take your word for it that they worked like that back then too, as I have since discovered that my source for this information hasn't been too reliable on some of these aspects specifically! - In regards to both Firestarter and Aetherial Manipulation, these makes sense, since a lot of things in the game worked a lot slower back then. Supposedly, some oGCDs like JUMP on Dragoon took so long to resolve that on some connections, it was impossible to weave it without clipping the GCD, just as an example. - Since in Stormblood, using Flare would leave you completely out of MP, and your only option was Transpose and WAIT, I could imagine the opportunity to get Thundercloud procs, and the fact T4 wasn't groundtargeted (like Freeze), made it an excellent spammable choice. Flare also had other issues so I can see how this adds up for a spam T4 AoE rotation

You may be thinking of tanks for the accessories main stat thing, because tank accessories came exclusively with vit, but their damage was derived from strength (apart from one patch where they experimented with making it come from vit, everyone loved it but the devs removed it for some reason), so tanks would often meld their accessories with strength, and since main stats are so strong a lot of tanks would be running fully strength pentamelded crafted accessories, causing them to miss a lot of vit from the lower ilvl and causing a good deal of grief to healers! For DPS however, accessories did come with their main stat (a HW example is here kzbin.info/www/bejne/fIe8YYOig9yrnMU ), but there was no vit on them, meaning DPS would often meld vit during prog to help survive mechanics, especially since prog was a lot more gear gated back then. As for the 50% cast time for opposite spells in UI3/AF3, I'm not surprised you weren't able to find anything on this since documentation for pre-Stormblood abilities is incredibly lacking, but you can find old PoVs that showcase this, e.g. kzbin.info/www/bejne/e4DUeYikha-Circ

Ah you are right! That would certainly make INT Materia (Not to mention DEX and MND Materia) completely pointless ^^ And yes, one of the main memories I have of accessories not having main attributes is specifically attributed (pun intended) to tanks using crafted Accessories to pentameld Strength on it! And regarding your comment not getting posted: I don't know what happened to the previous one, but to filter out botspams and scammers, I have set a filter that means I have to manually accept comments with links in them :-)

pretty sure some of the DPS spells/actions were designed with pvp in mind since back then pvp didnt have a simple combo/action system

Oh, the mp once raised? I wondered the whole time, why this isnt the case and why whe are looked by 10.000 mp from the start. I wonder, if it would work to remove mp completly. And make attacks like fire 1-4 to a rotation. Like with the meele (could maybe make problems by the healer)

Some jobs use mp, and there it's functionality is an important part of the job. Even Dark knight and paladin both are, at least in part, designed with the fact they recover 200 mp per 3 seconds as part of their toolkit 😊 I believe they removed varying mp because most spell had a base % cost, so fire 4 would cost 16% of your mp before any piety, and things like that 😁 So making your mp a flat 10000 was actually more to make it an easy to read percentage (100.00%), I believe this is also why the party list shows the two last numbers slightly smaller, to indicate this 😊

@@CaetsuChaijiCh Yeah, it is a idea i catched from the forum, where someone mentioned, that they could simply remove mp completly (meele and ranger can attack the whole time, caster can be out of play or are limited, if there mp drop to low). And, the idea came from the point of view, that it can be boring to press most of the time only one button (allways fire 1/2/4, until mp is very low and than finishing with the flare spells). While meele look a little more interessting with the 1.2.3 rotation (or drg with his 5 skill rotation). Ok, the blm has to keep track his procs and dot. And the movements, what make him busy. But, i can not deciding for the moment, if i want to stay a blm, or, change to a drg (i lost my ability to Player any caster in shb, when i hit lvl 75 -to much things to keep tracks on and the first Boss of 75er dungeon was a pain- and came back to maining blm, when i maked the final fight with zenos -wanted to end the story with the class, with that i begann to play-). Blm is the one i like from concept more (like magic and Wizards more, than knights and meele combat). He is slower and allow me more, to keep track of the surrounding. But, he is a little boring to watch. Drg is now the meele i like the most. He is faster. I have nearly no skills to have my eyes on them. He his smooth. Has good weapon design. And keep me busy. But, i have the problem, that i can fall into a attack rush and forget to watch my surrounding.^^ And, he has the shadow of the rework in 7.0 over his head. That greated the question for me, how the blm would look, if he wouldnt had the mp thing and would have 1-2-3 rotation to. Esspecial the ice skill could make use of it. Because, it becomes a useless skill and placeholder, after you unlocked the freeze spell.

All of the casters have a different style to melee (and ranged in some capacity), in that they don't have 1-2-3 combos, and I believe a lot of players like it that way 😊 And while blizzard One is highly limited in its usefulness as you get more spells, it is technically stronger than freeze on a single target 😁 Given the amount of jobs that rely on mp, removing it would lead to these jobs requiring a complete overhaul (including how healing works at a base level), and if not that, they would simply get an additional gauge that would work the same as mp I think 😅

Wait a sec. Enochian was rough back in HW days, yes, but I thought there was another action you could do that would extend it. Having it drop still stung, but that only happened if something went wrong in your rotation, I thought...

You extended it by casting blizzard 4. It would reset it but reduce it's duration by 6 seconds. Since the cooldown was 1 minute I believe, that meant you had to use Eno, then 30 sec later, use B4 to refresh it to 24, then later B4 to refresh to 18 seconds, and then use actual Eno to get it back to 30 again. Absolute madness! 😅

Scathe is allright. It serves its purpose. Damage could be always double ammount for bigger reliability, but thats all i would do with it.

I did not start maining BLM until the tale end of Storm blood. I have messed around with the class ever since ARR. I will say that it is the only class/job that has had a natural evolution with out it's core mechanics being changed. I love all the classes, but will quickly go back to my tried and true at anytime......except when I'm playing under 60 BLM. I can't stand my class under 60, lol.

Indeed! It is wild how many small adjustments black mage had compared to other jobs simply because a lot of other jobs had cases of things being replaced entirely a lot more! 😁 That is interesting! I find low level BLM unique and interesting enough that sometimes I will actively go out of my way to play it in low level content when possible 😊

@@CaetsuChaijiCh so let me clarify my stance on BLM under 60. IMO the class/job doesn't start to really take shape until you are at 60. Adding Fire 4 and Blizzard 4 to your rotation, not only increases your damage, astronomically, but it also breaks the monotony of spamming Fire 1 over and over again. This is why, IMO, the class/job really takes shape at 60. I don't mind playing under 60, however, being out DPS'd by a DNC, feels bad, lol. I love playing low level DNC by the way. It's stupid strong.

Oh I didn't mean it like that! I just find the super proc focused BLM rotation sub 60 fun sometimes! But I can see how it would be demotivating to see a lot of other jobs beat you because of it! I know dancer among others are weirdly super powerful at lower levels though! 😊

There is also a ranged physical variant but the name escapes me at the moment ^^

I play blm, pretty much only blm, but i doubt saying its hardest job is right. I think playing any healer is harder. They have to keep everyone alive, they have to deal with people fuck ups and they still have to do all mechanics at same time(very often healer speciffic). From that perspective i think healer is harder. As BLM, you are mostly responsible for yourself, your care only about your own rotation with very little utility for outside world. Its hard, but not hardest.
