I had a 1942 when I was 14 back in 55. I wish I still had it. As a 14 year old I miss treated it something awful, but it just kept running. That motor was bullet proof. I learned a lot from that old bike. I took a girl for a ride on it, and we have been married for sixty one years. Now at 80 years old, I am riding a 99 Softail Custom. Carbed EVO. But I would love to ride another 45 with the foot clutch and hand shift. That was so cool. The front brake cable was broken on mine which made for interesting take offs when the light changed on a hill. LOL. I learned to ride on my friends Whizzer Pacemaker motor bikes and Cushman scooters when I was 8 years old. Rode an Iron head Sporty for 23 years.

I bought a 37 45 back in 77, home on leave in Chicago, rode it to N.C. and all around, left it in my parent's house and bought a shovelhead, sold the 45 in 83, coming back from Beirut. Just bought a 42 this week, and learning to ride a rocker clutch, my last one had a "suicide" clutch, a bit more natural as it emulates a conventional stick shift clutch. Good to know the proper sequence for reliably starting, it's been decades, Thanks!

It is nIce to hear about and learn new stuff about these old bikes. My first Harley at 16 years old was a civilianized WLA....all stock HD stuff....$400 at a dirt bike dealer back in 67...so of course, being 16 I promptly stripped off the leather bags, windshield and halved the fenders.....sigh. Oh well....I do much the same these days, but with Evos.

I think my Ridercourse instructors had the same book. The 200-250cc bikes we had were all trashed; the one I rode kept dying on me because the side stand spring was weak and the ignition interlock switch kept killing the spark.

LOL! Very cool virtual ride! In 20 yrs will anybody know? These machines are thought of a being from a simpler time. Yet the metallurgy and electronics alone were sophisticated science that even now are hard to understand. Interesting comment about the generator. It now represents the construction of the motor of the new EVs.

Brings back fond memories. Had a chopped WL back in the 70's-80's. Loved it. Rode it all over Texas and New Mexico. We didn't call it's type bobbed like they do now. It was just a rat bike. But it was the best bike I ever owned.
