The fact that Lionello was caught twice afterwards acting inappropriately with young girls, leads me to believe that he was guilty of Annarella’s murder.
@adkBanjo4 ай бұрын
Prosecution generally requires evidence, without which society would devolve into an intolerable mess of 'Salem witch trials' taking precedence. Although I agree with you that requiring such evidence in some cases increases the probability of the 'obviously guilty' to go free - using law of evidence and placing the burden of proof on the plaintiff and the defendant deemed innocent until proven otherwise in a court of law has the desirable effect of reducing the probability of convicting innocent people however it does not eliminate the possibility.

The police did nothing when Annarella's mother went to them for help but took action when the man who had abandoned his wife, girls and invalid son with no means of subsistance, did. From what I was told about life in Italy after the war by British servicemen who were there, the poverty and hunger were extreme and prostitution was extremely common. Women would sell themselves for powdered milk to give to their hungry babies, and the shame of it should have attached to the soldiers who took advantage rather than to the mothers.

Such a strange response and result. People pouring out to her funeral, city dignitaries included. Had that much concern been shown to her and her family prior to her murder it wouldn’t have happened. Families were broken and hungry and received no help, but when there’s a photo op or chance for acknowledgment, suddenly people of means and influence come out of the woodwork. Still helping no one.

That is called patriarchy. At a time before DNA, a married woman who had a child was presumed to have given birth to her husband‘s child. That is why, in a lot of countries, it would only be deemed adultery if it was a married woman committing it, and not a married man. We still have places and countries where a rapist would get a lower conviction than a woman having an abortion following that rape. In terms of gender, laws are sometimes far from being equal for everybody.

I can't grasp anyone who can harm a child. No matter what reasoning they find (identifier possibly). But that is obviously what makes me different from these cold blooded child killers😡 Interesting that dad left, taking the money earners. 😮 Then when mom had to do whatever to keep her family going, people looked down on her. Then dad could sue the woman (struggling) for divorce for infidelity. The imbalance is shameless. Thanks for another learning experience, with this great upload BC!

This case stands out for the inconsistent and frankly unbelievable behaviour of the police and courts. While I don't believe Annarella could have been saved, I'm astonished for instance that her grandfather was the one to find her in a well (bodies of water are high priority search areas and have been for hundreds of years) while working on a hunch or dream, months after Annarella went missing. It's like the authorities were running in neutral. I'm even more surprised because this happened in Italy. Italian society is very protective of children. I can only guess that the post war chaos had something to do with it.

This is a prime example of why the "tradwife" lifestyle is detrimental for women and why we need to earn our own money and never depend on a man- because when he walks, we are condemned. Annarella's worthless father abandoned the family, forcing her mother into prostitution, and not only did the town criticize her (as if she had any other option), the SOB of her ex-husband accused her of adultery. Poor Annarella. She didn't have a chance.
@orientalrose43884 ай бұрын
It seemed to me it was mainly family breakdown, which left the way open for this crime. Also, the family’s oldest son was an amputee: who was looking after him and seeing what he was doing, while all this was going on? Maybe he kept the wrong company? I was also taken with the idea that it’s often those who are hiding in plain sight within local communities who may be the most guilty - not always a random stranger. I noticed in this episode, that the divide between rich and poor was striking and can mean the police are less attentive to those from poorer or less privileged backgrounds as “something is always happening with them” and these prejudicial attitudes may delay serious murder investigations when timing is of the essence. This is simply unjust, and is no less true today. An absorbing episode today Brief Case! 🦋

Good morning, First of all this story was very heartbreaking. It makes me angry that the police didn’t take the mother seriously but when the father came in, they decided to do something. I am a bit confused because at first the autopsy says that she was stabbed four times, but the man accused said he hit her with a stick and threw her down the well. either way, this young beautiful child didn’t deserve to die the way that she did. I think it’s also sad that the police did not allow her mother to go to the funeral. I’m angry at the father because he sued the mother and the reason why I’m angry is while they were separated. Did he support the family? Did he give them money? It didn’t seem like he did, but he sure was ready to sue the mother for infidelity. At any rate, this poor beautiful child was killed. her life cut short and that’s the most saddest of this whole story. thank you for another great story. As somekne from Rome, whose family gravited around many of the places you talked about, this case really hit me. Not sure what to think about this guy. Surely he kept coming and going from prison, but also, in the confession he said he hit her with a stick, she fainted and he threw her in the well. But he didn't talk about stabbing her, so I'm not sure. It is true that in many cases (comes to mind the case of Gino Girolimoni, also an old famous case in Rome), police jist wanted to show they found the criminal, no matter what.

I suspect they had a perfect scapegoat. The fact maternal grandfather "dreams" about her being in the well and surprisingly she is, doesn't sit right with me. Mother was abusive and had a motive too, after the trial.
