Hungarian guy here. I used to catch episodes of this show on a German channel in the mid-nineties and I loved Harry, his appearance, the intricate animatronic mask and the lifelike facial expressions they could achieve with it. I mostly remember livingroom episodes, I had no idea the world found out about Harry in the second season. It deserves to be mentioned that the German version of the theme song is a pretty spot on translation and it works really well. I love that you dig up shows like this! I'm one of the rare few who does remember watching this as a kid, though not with a lot of specificity about particular episodes. I remember it airing on Saturday mornings, around the same time as "The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh" and "Shari Lewis and Lambchop," and I think I saw it before the film. As cheesy and dreadfully '90s as the show is is, Harry himself is one of the best special effects of all time in my book, and for that alone I'm glad they got more use out of the costume and animatronics rather than it rotting in storage. There were worse things to watch as a kid in the early '90s at least. I was glad to see this video and go down memory lane. As an aside, so many video reviews rely on hyperbole and exaggerated disgust; I really appreciate the evenness of your reviews and that when you want to express frustration with something, you use clips of a better version of that media as a reaction. It's funny without being over-the-top. Keep on doing what you do, Joe!

In "La Dos" from our second national TV channel We used to get some TV content in the afternoon for kids, like cartoons. After the cartoons they slowly increase the "adult" content, first with this kind of sitecoms and later more adult oriented sitcoms like "Married... with children". So like you imagine this was one of the first ones to be in that transition. I was a huge fan of Alf (here didn't airing Alf till the 90's!) so this was perfect for me. I never knew it was base in a movie. When I discoverd it was a movie I actually thought it was the movie from TV show and no the way it actually was. I had a soft spot for this TV show. I step up to the mic and do the best roar a ten year old can do, but they ask me to do it again. I do it again, they say one more time with all your power and blah blah blah. I remember this airing in the late 80s on BBC One in the UK. It wasn't immediately obvious from the listing in the Radio Times that it was a spin-off from the movie, as that was retitled as Bigfoot and the Hendersons for it's UK release, whereas the TV series retained the original title of Harry and the Hendersons. The movie is now available under it's original US title for DVD, TV airings, etc. I'm honestly surprised there wasn't a terrible animated spin-off, like with Fonz & the Happy Days Gang, etc.

John Lithgow came to speak at my college more than thirty years ago (his father taught at the film department), and spoke of making Harry and the Hendersons as a nightmare production. The first-time director gathered all the cast and crew on the first day and the first words out of his mouth were, "So!" (claps hands together) "How do we want to do this?" He said you could hear a hundred and fifty people simultaneously slump forward and heavy sigh. The guy would spin out these crazy ideas off the top of his head, which were good ideas, but would take hours and hours to set up because there was no preparation. "Meanwhile," Lithgow commented, "We're making this blithe family comedy, and we were all waiting around endlessly for our chance to try to be funny under those circumstances."

Failure? It ran three seasons in first run syndication during a time when first run syndication was mostly Small Wonder, Donahue, and A Current Affair. It wasn’t shot on video. It was shot on film. Had a decent production budget.

I played the little next door neighbor girl in this TV series. Gigi Rices daughter, Tiffany. I have no footage of me on the series, if you find some I’d love to see it! Kevin was an amazingly sweet man. I loved him so much. And you are right, almost everything happened in that living room. My biggest memory was getting to meet the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders ( for whatever reason) and jumping off a roof? I was 5-6years old

I was terrrified of the movie when I was a kid, I must've been a bit too young at the time (4 years old when it was released), but I absolutely loved the sitcom in the 90s and then ultimately the movie. I even had a Harry talking toy.

I remember watching the show as a kid, all it needed to have my attention was Harry and with that it most certainly delivered. I guess you could say it was a failure as an adaptation of the movie, but considering it lasted 72 episodes without getting cancelled (apparently it has an acutal series finale and a 2 parter no less), I'd say it was a success in its own right.

Yeah, it died mainly because syndication sitcom market just dried up. Wb/upn was starting, fox was 7 nights a week, star trek/Hercules hour long imitations had took all the time slots. It is surprising USA network didn't end up with the reprats

@Attmay 3 жыл бұрын
@@petewillson205 USA Network had its own sitcoms along with reruns of short- and long-lived network shows and game shows. They didn't seem to have room for it. Local stations decided they could make more money with trash talk shows and infomercials.

Ideas for a Forgotten Failures: The Super Mario Bros. Movie from 1993, The Sandlot 2, and Problem Child. Now heads up, I know that some people like Problem Child but to me it was stupid but not in a fun way, unlike the 1993 Mario movie it was stupid but at least was a fun kind of stupid. And the ideas I bring up are not requests they are interesting ideas for a forgotten failure video.

Among the series' directors were series star Bruce Davison, Scott Baio, Frank Bonner, Tony Dow, Richard Kline, Dwayne Hickman, and Donna Pescow. The series' theme song was "Your Feet's Too Big", performed by Leon Redbone. The show was syndicated on various local channels from January 13, 1991 to June 18, 1993 and reruns continued to be syndicated until the fall of 1998. Reruns aired on digital subchannel Retro Television Network from August 2008 until their distribution agreement with NBCUniversal ended in June 2011.

I... I... remember watching this show! I was only 4 or 5 during the 1st season, so my memories are _very_ vague, but I definitely remember watching what was probably at least a few episodes. My most vivid memories are, of course, of Harry himself, especially his amazingly lifelike appearance! (I also especially remember the living room set... I always thought that was weird and I never knew why, but your explaining that most of the show was set only in that 1 room likely explains that.) I also watched the movie, I think, although I was probably too young to do so since all I can remember of it is feeling either scared or bored during it... nothing about the actual film, itself. I'm only a recent subscriber, but I've been really enjoying your content!

Funny, I'm swissgerman and I remember the show but didn't even know there was a movie. As a child I always admired the house in the show, a house mostly out of wood surrounded by trees. The german song was very catchy, sometimes that enough to be popular around here. Also the puppeteering art was great in that times, I miss it.

I not only remember the tv show but I remember it fondly. Playing for years on Weekend mornings in Los Angeles. Not only that but Universal Studios had a attraction that featured the tv show and behind the scenes of what goes on in the special effects. I guess it was just bigger here in Southern California. I didn’t have cable growing up so we were limited to the few channels that were over the air.
