Throughout The Sopranos' first few seasons, it is clear to Tony and the audience, that his mother Livia, is by no means a typical loving and caring mother. As Livia is the complete opposite of the typical mother that we would see on television. Often seen on screen yelling, complaining, wishing she would die, and eventually trying to kill her very own son, it was clear Livia was not loving to any of her children. But this is especially true with the case of her only son Tony. A few episodes stick out to where Tony realizes just how bad she was a mother, Down Neck, 46 Long, Isabella, and I Dream of Jeanie Cusamono are all standouts that reveal the true character of Livia Soprano and just how evil and bitter she was.
What are your thoughts about the legendary character of Livia Soprano? Let me know down below! 👇🏻

The scene where Livia goes from crying for attention to laughing at Tony's pain when falling from the stairs always trips me the fuck out. Like actually something out of a horror movie, especially with it being so realistic. Anyone whos ever dealt with truly emotionally manipulative people knows how true to life that scene was. They pretend to love you, going as far as sobing to your face about it, but do it just to laugh at your pain. One of her best scenes imo.

Livia is so realistic it makes me mad. She reminds me of two people in my life: someone I know with BPD and my great-grandmother. The disorder doesn’t damage the person but instead damages everyone around them by sabotaging their relationships and using manipulation to get what they want. My great-grandmother was Narcissus in the flesh. She treated her husband like dirt but idolized him when he passed. She was so horrible to my grandmother, that after she (finally) passed, my grandmother had to go to therapy but not because she was sad. She went to therapy because she was happy about her death and felt wrong because she wasn’t sad.

A few of the rare moments where she expressed genuine joy were when Anthony Jr got suspended and when she was told that Ritchie supposedly left Janis. Once you are able to see this cluster B behavior it becomes hard to not see it. Livia was a fictional character but these kind of people really do exist and it's not as uncommon as people think. You can even see it in their "good deeds" that they broadcast for purposes of maintaining appearances. They only care about themselves and how they are viewed. They couldn't care any less about others save for their contempt for them. If you know anyone like this, keep a safe distance from them no matter how you know or are related to them. The only use they have for you is whatever purpose you serve for them. They will seek to hurt you unless you are serving their ego and even then you had best watch out for yourself.

She was a horrible woman, very well written and well acted. Like in Beowulf, the monster Grendel isn't the real villain of the story; the monster's mother is the real 'big bad'. I remember a literature professor saying about Beowulf, that the monster's mother is subliminally scarier than the monster could ever be, because that which created a monster must be even more powerful and frightening. It's something I think about a lot when I re-watch the Sopranos and see Tony suffering through dealing with his mother.

I think one of the brilliant things about her character was that it's pretty accurate to real conditions that don't seem at all logical cause they're not. I do think she resented her kids cause they were also Johnny Boy's kids and she felt slighted by him, but it was also that she had a personality disorder and refused any and all treatment and treatment for personality disorders are limited to non-existent, depending on the diagnosis, already. Tony and many other characters' antisocial personality traits are logical and exist for a reason, many seemed like normal kids and learned em as coping mechanisms to deal with the traumatic and harmful ways they (and often their family, friends, and acquaintances) feed their families while others did well in that world specifically cause they're psychopaths with no fear of death or prison and no feelings towards the people that get hurt with their scams and schemes be it other gangsters or civilians. Even when they're unrelatable they can usually be rationalized to some degree. Her's not so much and thats usually how it is with people like her, especially to their victims. And Nancy acted that role beautifully too so it was even more believable and impactful, especially to anyone thats been around people like that.

I always found Livia as an essential character to the show. She is the original victim. We see repeatedly throughout the series how woman are viewed and treated in the mob. On top of that, Livia comes from a time where men were dominant figures and woman were less respected in society as a whole. It's hinted at sporadically in the show and in Many Saints that Johnny Boy was quite the narcissist himself. It's not touched on too much, because Tony himself with his rose-tinted glasses won't touch it, but Melfi picked up on it and would nudge him towards that reality. When two narcissists get together, they make each others lives and everyone's around them a living hell. A neverending game of fights, gaslighting, one-upsmanship, and abuse, but they'll very rarely leave each other. Unless one of them gets bored or gets their ego too bruised, they get locked into a cycle of toxic codependency where they feed off each other. Then once one of them dies, the other is almost idolized by the survivor, to milk others of sympathy and express frustration at losing their favorite punching bag. I'll bet you dollars to donuts that if Livia went first, Johnny would always go on about how she was "a sweet girl" and "the mother of my children", even to his goomah.

Livia reminded me of my maternal grandmother. She was bipolar, could be negative often, but she did have more instances of joy and happiness later in her life, even being alone in her house after my grandpa died, where it seems like Livia was never happy. She also had some old timey racist vocabulary (I.e. Blacks Mexicans, etc). P.s. her son, my uncle could be a real bastard but my grandma never tried to kill him tho. Lol

My maternal grandmother was the same way, she did her best to ruin her daughter's life, sucking the joy out of her, manipulating her and generally being a human black hole. Her daughter, my mother, coped thru her abuse by beating me my entire childhood. That's how the cycles of transgenerational trauma works. I never had kids, that's how I finished that cycle, not the optimal response, but I'd hate myself if I ever hurt my child like she did her daughter and her daughter did to me. My mom and I always marvelled at the character of Livia, she even looked like my grandmother.

You can’t blame Livias outlook. She was a housekeeper and baby maker. She shouldn’t have pushed her bitter outlook on her children, but you cannot blame her for having it. She didn’t get all the trappings that we see Carmella has. They lived in a modest house and she wasn’t dressed as a glamorous trophy wife. She had a miscarriage alone because her husband was with his goomar. Her life was to be a maid for her husband with very little return. Her trying to have to Tony killed was messed up, but I think she was in the early stages of dementia by that point. She often didn’t know who her own grandchildren were, clearly she wasn’t of sound mind and she resented the mafia.

This is a good analysis but as someone who is specializing in BPD research, Dr. Melfi is wrong. The writer of the show has a stigmatized view of BPD because Dr. Melfi's explanation of BPD and her reasons for diagnosing Livia with it are based off BPD stigma and demonization. Not everyone with BPD is a manipulator or abusive. People with BPD are capable of love. Livia is more likely to have Narcissistic Personality Disorder than Borderline Personality Disorder based on how she is as a character. If she were borderline, she would not take any opportunity to shit on her kids, that's a narcissist thing to do. Borderline mothers who have untreated BPD are more inconsistent and fluctuate between being warm, affectionate and overprotective to being cold, emotionally withdrawn and hostile. If she's consistently terrible to her kids it isn't BPD.

One of the only good things about many saints and its deleted scenes was it showed Livia and Tony's early relationship. She clearly had moments where she cared about Tony and vise versa. She just doesn't quite understand how to show, it. She was also very fond of dickie with those two seemingly being the only two she actually liked being around, with tony obviously being her favorite child and the main thing getting in the way of them understanding eachother is tonys immaturity and both of their lack of any ability to properly explain their feelings. Until dickie dies and drugs are found on his body(meant for her) which lead to her disgust at dickie due to the assumption of him being a junkie. Then there's Tony who later as we see in the sopranos, lies about Johnny's absence during her miscarriage in an attempt to gain approval from his father which led to Livia feeling like the only remotely positive part of her life betrayed her. Leading to her doing her best to make the rest of Johnny and Tony's life around her a living hell. All in all I could fix young Livia she was hot

Livia was very intelligent and nobody can say the lady lacked strategy or diplomatic skills. She was the equivalent of a gangster. Tony saying a woman boss would never happen in the United States, I don't think it's a far conclusion to jump to that Livia knew about and helped her husband make decisions... Just like she did with Junior.

I’ve seen comments from people who actually defend Livia and even say she was a better wife and mother than Carmela. I seriously have to wonder if these people went in for an IQ test and the results came back negative. Saying that Livia was better than Carmela in any way, shape or form is like saying Denethor was a better person and ruler of Gondor than Aragorn.
