The Sopranos follows New Jesey mob boss Tony Soprano. In today's video, I wanted to discuss whether Tony made the right choice in sending Feech La Manna back to prison, whether it was the right thing for Tony to get rid of Feech, and whether Feech's apology, when he says he'll learn and he still thinks of Tony as a kid, was genuine. So let's discuss!

And Tony remembered it. I don’t think Tony was afraid of Feech stealing his spotlight in any way whatsoever. Feech was simply disrespectful and felt he was owed so he started taking without asking. He was bad for business and Tony wasn’t going to allow it. Fool me once, shame on you/Fool me twice, shame on me. Moving on turf without asking and then not kicking up twice is not a good sign. Feech screwed himself with his hard headedness.

Feech was a time bomb. From his perspective, he gets out of the can and is now expected to show obedience, respect and deference to a younger man. Not just any younger man, but the very one who once robbed Feech's card game to make a name for himself. Multiple characters expressed disdain for Tony because he was a relatively young boss, but Feech was especially dangerous. To him, it was personal.

Everyone has mentioned that Feech was a legend and was feared. Something that wasn't said about Dimeo, Johnny Boy, Corrado, Richie, etc. Most likely Feech was some ultra macho, alpha male type, and his actions/personality/behaviour reflected that. He was also similar to Paulie, a now older guy, with no wife and no kids.... Beansie correctly stated that all Paulie has in his world is his image... Feech is the same, he only has his image, thus he made sure it is maintained.

The dangers of sending Feech back to prison is that Feech knew a lot about Tony's dealings in the criminal World. If Feech wanted to, he could have easily given the FBI strong tips on how to bust the "Godfather". Yes, Feech was old school and the odds of him "snitching" were low, but if he came to the realization that Tony set him up, he may have well felt giving the FBI information was acceptable. Feech would die in prison and could have given a death bed confession. For all we know, the killing of Tony Soprano could have been partly due to a Feech confession in prison. If he didn't talk to the FBI, he could have given New York inside information.

I like how you can kinda see some parallels with how Tony handled Feech vs how he handled Vito. Feech commanded respect, and held the traditions of la Cosa Nostra with pride. He was a stand up guy, and he brought fear and respect everywhere he went. Meanwhile you had Vito, who was reduced to Captain of the Good Ship Lolipop. However, where Tony defended and delayed Vito's execution, he wasted no time in dealing with Feech once he was recognized as a problem. And it all boils down to how Tony viewed the Mafia. This wasn't a brotherhood to him, it was a business, and the only thing that truly mattered at the end of it all was how much money each individual man could make him. Feech had to be pushed and prodded to give Tony a cut of low-end scams and robberies. Whereas Vito raked in millions off of construction. At the end of the day, reputation and respect came second to Tony.

I think it was evident Feech didn't like Tony, and probably thought he should be dead from robbing the card game. And held clear resentment towards him over it. When he told the story, he presented it like he was over it but was trying to humiliate Tony when telling the story. I don't think he was going to change, not just because the times changed. Because he didn't like or respect Tony. He apologized, because Tony is the boss and he does respect tradition. But he can't help himself. Like leopard can't change its spots. Feech's dislike for Tony wasn't going to either.

“Nipping it in the bud” with Feech was maybe the wisest thing Tony did. And while it ended up being his defiance in the Tony B. situation that led to his ultimate demise... if Feech had stuck around, the unrest from within his own ranks would’ve probably done them in. Richie wasn’t as well-liked as Feech. He made his own bed with the whole Beansy ordeal. Feech could have caused major problems for Tony... far beyond anything Richie or Ralph ever did.

Feech kept saying “in my day”, in his day if he was so smart he wouldn’t have went to jail. When he gets out he does petty things like beating up Pauly’s landscaper. I don’t think he was an asset at all, he was out of control. If he would have put his ego aside and listened to Tony I believe he would have eased on in and would have reestablished himself again. He just didn’t have the patience or temperament.

I wondered why Tony didn’t have Feech off’d and was surprised he just sent him back to prison. For instance, Tony had no plans of sending Richie back to prison. Part of it was Richie was younger and Tony basically sent a Feech back to prison to die. However I think he also didn’t have him killed because Feech back off of him and Jackie about robbing his card game. Tony’s Dad to intervene and that is why Feech didn’t have Tony and Richie killed. However I think that is why Tony sent him to prison to die rather then assisinate him. He also viewed Feech, for all his faults and annoying stories, an actual legend in the game and he knew that Feech was old school and wouldn’t cooperate with the Feds. He also knew that Feech was well liked and it would bad for business if he off’d a likeable legend like Feech who had developed a lot of respect in his crew. He realized it would be better just to send him back to prison rather then have him offer. Plus he remembered Feech didn’t go after him after he and Jackie robbed the card game, even though it was because of Tony’s Dad that he let Tony and Jackie live.

As Cineranter points out, Feech could have had value. If he had assumed a mentor role such as Silvio, perhaps the war with NY could have been avoided. Heck, Feech was buds with TonyB and perhaps could have saved TonyB from getting killed and the whole NY mess. The question here is... was Feech trustworthy and smart enough to become an asset or dangerous? It's a tough question in that if Feech had brains, he wouldn't have been tricked into getting busted back to prison. After all, Feech didn't fool Tony whose therapy and, quite frankly, read-the-room skills allowed him to ferret out Feech's entitlement attitude. It would have been interesting to see if Feech could have been made useful in a role but... that carried the risk that empowering in a mob politics role, rather than as an earner, would have meant Tony would be training his replacement. Heck, if Feech was alive, it's likely that NY would have clearly planned to whack Tony and replace him with Feech who presented a FAR better mob boss that they wanted to run NJ in the first place.

I personally thought Tony made a mistake with Feech, he over-reacted a little bit because with Richie he under-reacted, so he tried to not make the same mistake but from my understanding, Feech wasn't going to betray Tony, sure he had problems taking orders and getting up to date with how things are now, but the way he said "I'll learn" sounded real like he had a hard time bowing his head but he did it, there's no real evidence that he was gonna go the 'coup' rout like Richie, and btw Tony was also disrespectful, he would try to assert dominance when they were hanging out, acting all insecure about jokes and stuff, that was too pathetic, to me it was part of the Theme in the last two seasons that Tony is completely paranoid and over-reacting and pushing his most trusted men away which led to his downfall, he pushed away Chris, he shit on Silvio even, his last straw to go against Feech was that slow-mo scene where he's shitting on Feech's jokes and Feech is looking at him with Disgust, but that look was about them hanging out and him not respecting the old timer enough, it wasn't the look of 'I'm going to back stab you' but anyway, they definitely left it up to interpretation

I think the thing that sealed Feech's fate was his remark on Johnny Sack. While New York and Jersey weren't open enemies just yet, their alliance was tense at best. And the moment Tony knew that Feech, a man who wouldn't bow down easily to him, was working with the other team, that's when he couldn't risk letting Feech stick around.

You forgot the main clue to Feech’s intensions. His first story to Tony after he got out of prison was about when he first got into prison and he purposely picked out the main guy in there and went for him to assert his authority. This is a man who does not settle for being under anyone else’s command. I think it was a little hint to Tony to look out

This man was an absolute legend & one of my favorite characters on the show. I tend to believe the book bc it does seem like Feech was going to be the next “problem guy”/antagonist for the season along with Tony B. I really wish he stuck around at least a few more episodes bc the actor had so much charisma & portrayed the character perfectly.

No. Feech was never going to respect Tony, he saw him as a kid still and had a huge chip on his shoulder going back to the card game boost. The main issue is how popular Feech is and how legitimate his claim to being boss could/would have been. Realistically if say Feech is not in the can at the time Jackie Aprille dies he very well could have been the boss just via earning, time in and how feared he was on the street. It was a lateral move instead of wacking the guy out just send him away for another 5 years.

Tony sent Feech back to prison because in this part of the show when Feech set up the heist to steal all the cars from the wedding of the mob Doctor Tony knew, Tony already told Feech he a friend of mine meaning he off limits. Feech ignore that and didn't anyway when Tony got the call from the doctor about the heist Tony was outrage until Feech told him, Johnny Sac connected him with a guy where he can sell the cars. To me this indicates clearly Johnny Sac was gonna take a cut of that and Tony and Sil did discuss how well liked he is and how he could present a problem.

The decision by Tony was the correct one. Feech just doesn't get that other guys are not going to voluntarily give up turf & earnings, or that the current capos and bosses are giving orders that have to be obeyed. Feech had a big personality, but the real issue was that he was basically not respectful of the new order and the people in it. He's not listening when they tell him not to carve out any new earnings without checking first. Feech is not an idiot, because he's building support among younger guys, trying to one-up people, and sniffing around for signs of discontent against the ranking guys. Tony's not an idiot; he sees this. He doesn't want to do something bad to Feech, because Feech could be a great potential capo for a crew, if only he would listen and show due respect to the guys already there. Instead, the way things were going, Feech was either going to end up dead by Tony's hand, or at some point by Paulie's or Christoper's. So Feech getting forced retirement back in prison was as merciful as Tony could allow himself to be.

Great episode this. I always felt a part of Feech understood that he had to adjust and i felt that his apology was half real but that ultimately a kooshty lap of honour for his retirement would never be enough as he would definitely get back to his old groove. one thing I've noticed after watching a lot of these conspiracy theories about sopranos and the writing of the show, is that like decent art, they leave a lot up to interpretation which is great, even though a lot of these are too much of a reach, the way the story is written and structured gets you to that place where you feel like you're reaching, it has that characteristic

What people don't realize is that sending Feech back to the can was the cruelest thing Tony could do. Imagine being an old timer and getting through that whole damn 20 year sentence keeping your mouth shut but you had something to look forward to. Getting out, getting back to living life, kicking ass, and chewing bubble gum. When he goes back in for the next stint there's probably not even a glimmer of hope of getting back out again. Even IF that could happen and it's a huge IF..... Feech is going to be too damn old to do much of anything by the time he gets back again. I can't possibly imagine taking that bus ride back into the can taking one last look at the outside knowing your own family set you up and the walls start closing in.

It was the right move. Feech saying "I'll learn" seems to carry the subtext of "eventually", as if he plans to take his sweet time tapering down instead of stop when ordered to. Like he'd "methadone maintenance" instead of detoxing, figuratively speaking. He was a Wolf, he made it obvious - making it obvious when he was wearing Sheep's clothing.

The part about French going to see Junior instead of Tony to get back in the game is because at that point in time, Junior technically still had the “stripes”. The way Tony presented things was that Junior was still the top guy and he was just acting boss on behalf of his uncle. The fact that Tony really was running things was a side agreement between Junior and Tony. The Capos and the FBI eventually found out that it really was Tony running things but that wasn’t until later in this season when Junior had to act mentally challenged for his trial.
