The biggest problem with the gaming industry are the investors and their unreasonable expectations. FF7 Remake vs Rebirth is a prime example. Rebirth is a better game, but is considered a “failure” because it was released on PS5 (with less than half the install size of the PS4) and because it had no pandemic to push it, it didn’t sell as well. Also the fatigue of over saturation in FF and other RPGs and blockbuster games was to blame. We just got FF16 last year and I still haven’t had a chance to play that one yet (couldn’t put down Tears of the Kingdom at the time).

These game companies didn't think about diminishing returns. Every new game cant just be more and more expensive and expect more and more profits no matter what. At the rate they're going, $1 billion dollar games are right around the corner and will cost $200 for just the base game, $80 more for DLC, and $20 a month for their subscription service.

The current state of Gaming has been a blessing in disguise for me. It finally gave me a big enough reason to go through my backlog of retrogames (which is a huge backlog.)
@ragmanx62569 ай бұрын
The way I see it, backlogs are a thing many people should be looking at. I frankly don't get this fixation with getting showered with new things while ignoring the remaining 95%+ things gathering dust in a corner and pretending there's this contrived sense of scarcity people just make up to rationalize their outrage over relatively dry release periods, especially now when undercooked new things are notoriously broken on release.
@iortizjunior9 ай бұрын
Gaming isnt stale at all. Some of ya need to expand what genres you play. There are a lot of great games that released this year so far. Also play your backlogs. Pick up older games you never played. You don't have to play every new game on release to enjoy gaming. Also gamers themselves are to blame why gaming is in the state it is in. Gamers don't support new games even though they want new ideas. Gamers also want these high fidelity games but then complain that games are taking so long to make.
@Piccolo9189 ай бұрын
I agree on some points, but I disagree with other points. You expect people to buy broken, unpolished, lazy, and full of political checklist video games. Games aren't being made for consumers anymore. Instead, it's about a message about society and how there isn't enough representation in games. How about companies stop the political messages and focus on what consumers want. All I want is a good video game. I don't care if it's a reboot, remake, or sequel just do it right.

I think it might be far more societal than ever. Back in 2019, my big concern was that too many games were coming out, and there were some titles that we wind up passing up. As a Switch owner, I have managed to pick up some games that I passed up in the previous years. But I think the problem is far worse than ever when we all have far shorter attention spans than we used to. Case in point: I do want to finish up on a game that I've been playing. But at the same time, other games try to grab my attention span and I want to go play those instead. Worst case scenario is that I don't even bother to play a game because of that, or because of other things I want to do, like drawing, writing a fanfic, and other projects. Or even real life gets in the way. As someone who is aware of the Switch 2, I'm not as concerned about it as I'm supposed to. Why? I think I've gotten to the point where I have enough games to last the rest of my lifetime. Sure I know there won't be any games I will be able to finish. But I'll be glad to have played to my dying breath.

For me, I think VR is what will push innovation in the gaming industry moving forward. Yes, it's still super niche even to this day and I'm definitely romanticizing here, but I'm hoping it evolves to a point where it's like SAO without the irl dying. It'd just be so cool to really feel like you're in a MMO world doing raids with your friends and pulling off those actions with your in-game body. Or even something similar to CP2077's braindances as eerie as that sounds. Idk if the tech will ever advance to that point or if we'll be alive if it does come to fruition but the possibility of that becoming a real thing would definitely push the whole entertainment industry as a whole; not just gaming.

Either it be unfinished & buggy games, or microtransactions & battle passes. (Suicide Squad…) But I can safely say for the time being, the only games I’m looking forward to that will fulfill my gaming needs are *Hades 2*, *Dragon Ball Sparking Zero*, (Even tho I think their will be DLC, the base game content might be justified for purchase) *Stellar Blade* *Warhammer 40K Space Marine 2*, *Black Myth Wukong* and even games that came out earlier are also pretty good. *Tekken 8*, *Persona 3 Reload*, *FF Rebirth* even though two of these are remakes, they’re built from the ground up and excel the originals in many ways

I think there's a number of things that are happening. First, the game industry is still recovering from the pandemic. Yes, the US opened up really quickly but a lot of nations didn't lift lockdowns and restrictions until relatively recently. This affected game release schedules and caused year 3 and year 4 games to get pushed back even further. Second, because of how Covid affected things, big companies are looking to make more money. One of the ways of doing that is remakes and remasters. Another way is live service games. This makes the AAA industry look as though it's stagnating, which, it kind of is. Companies aren't willing to take risks on new and original ideas because they just can't afford to. Third, when a company does actually make a big budget single player game, many times they lack the polish and quality that games of the past had because there's so much more going on in them now, they were made at a time where most people were working from home so there wasn't as much QA, and the publishers want to put them out before they're actually finished despite the developers telling them they need more time. Fourth, the indie scene is definitely over saturated. There's way too many games and way too many same template but slightly different theme games. Don't get me wrong, there's still original stuff out there, but it's few and far between in comparison to everything else.
@Allaphaidole6 ай бұрын
This is probably just a me thing, but I feel that games today have become too complicated. What got me into games as a kid personally was the story, characters, environment, sounds. And the best part, I could take my time and take it in. It was like how how books allowed you feel for the story by words, movies allowed you to witness a story and games allowed you to be in the story. Now when I play games, there is this nagging sensation of ' GOTTA GO FAST. GOTTA GET IT DONE NOW.' few games where I feel like I want to take my time and just take in the work the studios poured their time and soul into. No doubt why I have a heart for Red Dead Redemption 2, it gives you that option to take your time and invites you to linger within the environment and rewards you in a very beautiful way. Its not shoving you to the next section of the game. The second part of what I feel is an issue, even with games I like personally, is that the controls are getting a little complicated. To a point where it'll break immersion and pull me out of the experience. I do not mind a game with simple controls. Sometimes less is more and encourages creativity for problem solving when you have few game rules or interactions. Why I feel a few indie games were successful like Undertale, Little Nightmares, Stanley Parable, Inside etc. had pulled off so well. Like if game studios wanna make quick battle royals because that's what they love and want to connect people, great! but if it is only for the sake of a sale or because they are too nervous to branch out , then I encourage them to consider alternative options. Downsizing doesn't equal bad and would actually allow studios to present a full product worth the price that folks can enjoy.

I think this malaise has been bubbling in the background since the start of the 8th gen. I noticed that while first party PS4 games certainly looked better, I didn't enjoy them as much as PS3 games. Even then people were complaining about games getting dumbed down for normies. This was also the time scummy mobile business practices began to be incorporated into traditional gaming. GG 1.0 and ESG also dropped, which led to the industry over-correcting and hiring on a ton of these vapid activists. Skip ahead to today, and there's really nothing coming down the pipe that I'm excited about. I'm not spending $650 Canuck Kopeks for a PS5 just to play Stellar Blade. I don't play online, so none of these live services appeal to me. Most games now are too expensive, lazy, money grubbing, and broken. Investors keep trying to squeeze more blood from a saturated industry. The politics stuff is getting worse. Even Nintendo have been absolute butt nuggets lately with their crap customer service, broken controllers, online service shutdowns, and the war on emulation. It's all very exhausting. I've gone back to playing older stuff, and even there, almost entirely Japanese games. Definitely the worst it's been in my 30 years of gaming.

I think the issue at hand is how expensive it has become to make games. In order for a game to become a success, it has to be a blockbuster. Otherwise, it can leave a company in financial ruin. Due to this video game developers have become risk adverse. And the console exclusive is looking less and less profitable. By making a video game exclusive to one console you essentially limit the market that you can sell your games too. I believe this is what xbox has realized. Nintendo games are much less complex than the other two systems, so they do not suffer as severely as their two competitors. Sony is still playing the console exclusive game and in my opinion is going to cost them because although they are the top dogs ps5 owners are such a small market in comparison to the overweight, overblown, budgets for today's games. PS. I love gaming, I got all systems, PS5, Xbox series X, Nintendo Switch oled, and a gaming PC.

I feel it's gotten this way simply because as you said nobody's willing to take a risk, nostalgia is great but not when it's overused like this I'm so over remakes/remasters they completely lost their charm... *looking at you naughty dog.*

As a mid 90's kid, I couldn't agree more with your opinion RGT. I feel like games have become stale, repetitive, and rely too much on "how much money we're gona make, and how quick". If I go back and check my N64 collection (which I don't have anymore unfortunately), games like Snowboard Kids, Beetle Battle Adventure Racing, Banjo Kazooie... All of them had personality. I feel like the industry is now facing the problem of being unable to create new identities. New IPs aren't as frequent (which makes sense after all, videogames have been around for a while now), and they prefer to either remake old games (I'm a sucker for those so I'm probably part of the problem), or half-baked sequels (looking at you, newer Paper Marios...). Even indie games, as you mention, just copy successful entries. I've seen way to many Hollow Knight clones, more than I'll ever play.

Also played some arcade Pang then tried something I had overlooked, sports games. And now there is some great gameplay. I happened to get NASCAR Heat 5 on a sale, never played much, tried NASCAR thunder 2002 and compared the 2 and Heat 5 looks great, controls are responsive but it's about as fun to play as having one's teeth pulled out. Same for basketball, NBA Live 2003 : more fun the my latest 2K releases (admittedly none beyond 2K14). Never understood NFL (am French btw) but NFL Blitz just made the game click for me. Ok it's arcade oriented but the main point is I had fun playing. I think that's why we see so many roguelikes these days ie. if you're going to do the same thing over and over it had better be fun.

I always said one of the reasons why the console wars of the 90s and even early 2000s was good was because companies were competing against one another. And that that made them all pump out amazing title one after another. And like RGT points out, in a world where remakes/remasters are around because its essentially a "safe bet" and it stunts creativity.

Between mobile gaming and streaming game services, games are a disposable commodity now. The sense of investment you once had in buying a game and putting it on your shelf is history at this point. That and the cookie cutter aspect of these multi-million dollar AAA must-succeed games that really just play it safe makes it less attractive to people with increasingly more important things to do than rinse/repeat every few months.
