Thief 4 was a disaster but interestingly enough it's the game that got me into the franchise. I first bought it back on launch day for the PS3. I didn't like the game but i pretended to out of denial (i mean i just blew half a year's pocket money buying it). Afterwards i got into playing the originals and Thief 2 Metal Age turned out to truly be a masterpiece. Thief Deadly Shadows too was an amazing game. What caused Thief 4 to tank were the questionable design choices, heavy consolization of the level design, the gameplay itself which doesn't even hold a candle to the originals, the awful story, and the changing of Garrett's voice actor. It's fucked up how they treated Stephen Russell, Arkane literally treated Stephen Russell with a lot more respect than how the Thief 4 team did. Even had him voice Corvo in Dishonored 2 which was an excellent touch and a big middle finger to the Thief 4 team

Some of my Forgotten Gems would be... Jet Force Gemini, Tenchu Z, Gun, Lost Odyssey, Shadow of Rome, Chromehounds, Final Fantasy Explorers, 007 Nightfire and 007 Agent Under Fire, and Illusion of Gaia. These are just some games I thought didn't really get much exposure but seemed to be great regardless. Some of them are games I specifically really want to be reborn in some way. Jet Force Gemini was a Rare classic for the N64. I really liked how it had the 3 character system, and you'd land in different parts of the planet on each character, and sometimes it had crossover but you'd have different access based on the character traits. Vela could swim, Juno could tank Lava, and Lupus could hover. Was cool getting the tribals and collecting bug heads, the minigames, the music, fish food... The controls are dated, but I think it could be a good one to revisit. SS Anubis and Water Ruin tracks are so good... (Still wish I could see the timeline where Nintendo bought Rare instead of Microsoft, and continued making bangers...) Tenchu Z was the first Tenchu game I played a lot. I think I played a few levels on a PS1 Tenchu, not enough to count. I wish we had more Ninja Stealth Action games. I know there's an indie game Aragami that made a game like that, but not many others since Tenchu Z in 2006. I only recently learned it was made by Fromsoft too. It was pretty mediocre, but I would love to see a well polished entry to the series. Yeah, we got Sekiro and that scratched some of the itch, but wasn't very "Ninja stealth" of a game. At least this year we have some interesting Ninja games in development. Hyped for Phantom Blade Zero. Gun was a fun western game similar to Red Dead Revolver, made by Neversoft/Activision on 360. I do not remember a ton from this game, but it was pretty enjoyable. I haven't gotten around to Red Dead Redemption 1 or 2, but I feel like it would have been the middleground between Red Dead Revolver, and Redemption. Lost Odyssey was a Turn Based RPG made by some of the FF Devs, namely Hironobu Sakaguchi and Nobuo Uematsu on music. I believe Mistwalker said they wouldn't do a remaster or anything, so that's a shame. This 360 game had a great story, gameplay, and music. Still missing one of the 99 seeds on my original save... It had a really cool skill mastering system between the "immortal" characters. Shadow of Rome was a Capcom hidden gem on PS2. Game was 60% gory Coliseum slaughterfest as Agrippa, 30% stealth sections as Octavianus, and 10% Chariot Racing. You could cut off a limb or a head and use it as a weapon, and you'd get "salvos" for it, giving you bonus points. Was absolute chaos and so fun. It had a very arcade-y feel to it with all the salvos popping up on your screen, you could taunt/cheer to the crowd and get bonus points, etc. Really want to have this game get a second chance one day, but unlikely. It was a little clunky, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Chromehounds was a Multiplayer Mech game from Sega. I had little interest in it until playing it at a friend's house, and I recall playing it quite a bit. It was fun to customize your mechs with sniper cannons or closer range stuff, use a quadrupedal set of legs or use a tank track. Seemed to be competitive with Armored Core, but a slower pace. AC has kinda done a lot of the same things. Final Fantasy Explorers was Square's idea of "Lets make Monster Hunter but FF". I actually enjoyed it, despite getting mediocre reception. I'm a little bias with the Jobs and mastering skills (FF Tactics Advance made me enjoy that system a lot...). It was cool to go fight Summon monsters and stuff as classic FF jobs. I think it was just majorly eclipsed out by MH4 on the 3DS, but I feel if they tried again on a non-handheld, it might do much better. It came out pretty late in the 3DS lifetime too. The two 007 games of the GC Era, Agent Under Fire, and Nightfire, were so good. I remember playing hours and hours of splitscreen with the boys. Rarely ever hear of anyone who played them but I really liked these games. I remember one had a grapple hook thing that made the game so goofy to play MP. Illusion of Gaia was an Enix game on the SNES. Also don't hear many people talk about this one, but I remember it fondly. Action RPG, had some metroidvania kind of things to it imo. Was cool that it had 3 playable characters you'd swap to for various things, interesting story, good music. Could probably name a few others if I thought about it, but those are what comes to mind. Other games I remember fondly, aren't very hidden or forgotten imo, so I didn't include them. I could list a bunch of games that are good but aren't crazy popular, but I tried to go after older games that really stuck out for me that I feel like most people haven't played. Like if I imagined asking an average gamer, they would likely have responded "No, never heard of it" lol. Edit: Also echo sentiment below for XIII, that game was so good on xbox when it came out. Haven't finished the remake, but it's not the same... Timesplitters is an honorable mention, but they just got rereleased so I left them off the list. I'll add more if I think of em/see them in other comments that I remembered also. Edit2: Also the oldschool Medal of Honor games were pretty good. I forgot to mention Shadowrun for X360. A really cool MP only shooter that Fasa Studios went bankrupt after making. Had really cool concepts for a shooter, played it a ton. Kinda felt like Counterstrike with magic. Didn't really pop off, but it was great. I see mentions of The Nightmare Before Christmas game, and Brink, two more games I completely forgot about, but were also quite mediocre. Another one I forgot about but didn't fully play was "Black", I remember it was this FPS that had graphics quite ahead of it's time, but played kinda poorly. Another mention from someone else is Brink, similar fate as Shadowrun, was still a pretty fun MP Shooter back in the day. Couple more that never got sequels, Crimson Skies, one of the OG Xbox Live titles, and Condemned, one of the OG Xbox 360 titles (it did get a sequel, but nothing after) Edit3: Oh my god I completely forgot about the Lord of the Rings games for the PS2 era. I remember Legolas was crazy OP with these purple elven arrows. I remember renting all of those and having so much fun. I also bought the Game Boy Advance title for one of them and it literally played like a Diablo knockoff but was so fun. I think it was the Two Towers or Return of the King.

I'm gonna go with Legendary. You play as a thief tricked into opening Pandora's box only for the box to stab your hand marking you and imbuing you with it's power. The box then releases a beam into the sky and mythological creatures begin pouring into reality. The game itself was very buggy, pc requires a lot of messing with ini files but fighting werewolves and minotaur's while managing your health through the power to drain the energy from their corpses was really fun and the premise alone deserves to be done justice.

I remember Thief and Murdered Soul Suspect came out pretty early in the PS4 era when there was nothing else to play on it. Thief was the first PS4 game I bought just because I wanted something to play on the new system. It's an alright game but as I recall, it was a reboot and all the OG Thief fans moaned and complained about it so it's no wonder it's forgotten about now. Now Murdered Soul Suspect was a good game. I remember it being pretty short and not a whole lot of gameplay but the idea felt unique and if it had the opportunity to be expanded upon further, it had the potential to be a great series. 2 games that came out in the dead wasteland that was the early PS4 life cycle.

I used to play Future Cops L.A.P.D. with my little brother co-op back in the day. Like 20 years ago. Got reminded of it recently and really, really wanna relieve that. I remember you play like transformer cars you can turn into walking robos, it even changed your view, from topdown to third person, and it kinda had like base defending or something.

I grew up during the late 2000’s up to the mid-2010's, which were my childhood gaming golden days (and as an adult today, I still play in my free time, but not as much time as I had before). Aside from the games that were released in my childhood, I also played a lot of late 90's and early 2000's games. I also remember having a list that I kept updating up until 2019-ish. Have you heard of Galapagos: Mendel's Escape? Galapagos is a beautiful, fascinating and frustrating 1997 game for Windows and Mac in which you must guide an AI creature named Mendel through perilous sci-fi environments. You have no direct control over Mendel, and instead manipulate its environment to draw it forward and solve puzzles. Mendel's behaviour is managed by complex algorithms, and you could view Galapagos as a distant ancestor of The Last Guardian.

F.E.A.R. (2005, Monolith Productions) was a game ahead of it's time. Supernatural horror FPS with a clear influence from J-horror. Also, sports a quite good ragdoll physics, plus bullet-time effects. The Suffering (2004, Surreal Software). Supernatural, body-horror shooter with an interesting plot and setting. Spec Ops: The Line (2012, Yager Development). A good game that has been delisted from Steam in January, this year🪦

Shadowrun, an Arena FPS from early on in the 360's life. It used the setting from the tabletop RPG of the same time, so anyone familiar with the license was turned off by it being a PvP only shooter, while anyone unfamiliar with it was left with the weird mix of D&D and Cyberpunk, without any real explanation for what was going on. And, yes, this is the same Shadowrun as the Shadowrun Returns RPGs from a few years later. Kinda surprised Wolfenstein 2009 didn't make the list. It's another case of Activision delisting a game, but also one of Raven's last outings before they were eaten by the CoD support studios. It's still unique, in the sense that it's more of a Wolfenstein themed Metroidvania. The Lara Croft twin-stick shooters. (...and the Guardian of Light, ...and The Temple of Osiris.) Hard Reset. Who remembers Flying Wild Hog's first game? Agents of Mayhem. This will probably go down as the last hurrah for Volition before the Saints Row Reboot. It wasn't flawless, but had some neat ideas... and then got deep sixed. Aliens Vs. Predator 2. Not so much forgotten per se, but certainly an, "if you know, you know." That AvP2 is basically impossible to obtain today is truly sad. A bit more recent, but Deathloop. After Redfall, it's easy to write it off, but as the final (easter-egg) part of Dishonored, and as a pretty competent little mini-ImSim sandbox, it's sad how quickly this one's getting forgotten. It's not the best game ever, but it was creative, and deserved better. Far Cry: Blood Dragon. Obviously, no one's forgotten the Far Cry series as a whole, but this homage to 80s pop culture has become another, "if you know, you know," title that's otherwise depressingly obscure. Mad Max. It was panned by the critics back in 2015, and if you try to mainline the game in as few sittings as possible it can become monotonous. But, if you slow down a little, it quickly becomes a really striking post-apocalyptic world that blends desolate beauty with brutality. It's an excellent encapsulation of the films, even as large chunks are the by-the-numbers recycled content that irritated reviewers. It's not that old (it released last year), but Robocop Rogue City is one that I feel is going to get quickly forgotten. It's a budget title, without much of a marketing push. But, from Peter Weller reprising his roll, to the writing and the gore, it's an amazing adaptation of the films. (The same developer also released Terminator: Resistance, which is another licensed game that far better than it deserves to be.)

Just for context, regarding Evolve, you forgot to mention that most of the hype for this game died due to the extensive monetisation options that were revealed just prior to its release. Before then, some people were skeptical due to the online nature of the game, but there was also some serious support from others and the media. The notification of the planned pricing, however, was a millstone around its neck and effectively killed all interest in it. The hype was gone and the gameplay proved highly repetitive. It seriously became the poster boy at the time for unrealistic developer expectations in a brand new franchise. Turtle Rock ended up being purchased by Tencent in 2021, the same year it released Back 4 Blood, a spiritual successor to Left 4 Dead. The game had a lot of hype built up and initially sold well. However, it released to positive critical reception, but generally mixed public attention. It even led to more than a few video essays on KZbin arguing that it proved that the success of Left 4 Dead was purely down to Valve’s guidance. It released in October 2021 and, from what little I can see, didn’t last much beyond 2022. Still on Steam starting at 49.99 - though it has been on sale a few times around £10 and the user reviews recommended it at that price point. The marketing campaign comparing it to Left 4 Dead seems to have been a mistake and other less positive user reviews claim that it is slow to level up, unlock cards, and can feel very grindy. Some also feel that Turtle Rock have abandoned it. A classic franchise, much missed, is No One Lives Forever. On the console, I’d say Timesplitters.
