I have to commend Smith for his viewpoints here. Despite what seems to be said a lot, to me he demonstrates consistently a highly considerate and yet well-reasoned and rational perspective on a lot of social issues. His bar story was particularly interesting for rethinking the often binary perspectives of what sexual forwardness should or shouldn’t be accepted. Great example of why moral relativism allows for an open mind.
@___AB___5 жыл бұрын
i dont think it's an example of moral relativism (which imo isnt a good idea, nor makes anyone more open minded, since it basically means everyone can decide whether their actions are right or wrong; you might as well have no morality). i think he made the right call by going up to her out of concern. the only part he went wrong was assuming she wasn't ok with what happened. that can be easily addressed in the future by first asking whether what they did bothered her then proceeding to apologize if thats the case. the underlying moral reasoning which might boil down to 'sexual harassment is bad' still stays, it's just a matter of not assuming whether the person considers themselves to have been harassed.
@bushbaby44215 жыл бұрын
It doesn’t mean that at all. Moral relativism doesn’t have to mean total acceptance; I merely stated that as a state of mind it can be eye opening to other perspectives. For example, if a culture where the first borns eyes are removed, it could be easy to say it’s wrong, and, if you’re in a position of power, end it. However, it’s important to understand why it happens and the consequences of changing it. Maybe if it’s eyes aren’t removed, the child is outcast from its home, family, culture and people. Maybe it never completes a right of passage to becoming a tribes wise elder figure, who knows? In fact this isn’t so different from the issues of cultures that castrate certain sexes of children, for, especially for women, the process can be quite dangerous. It would be easy for a western culture to denounce such actions and stride in with their moral righteousness and kill a bunch of people to put an end to it. But, it is highly important for that culture, defining the right of passage from girlhood to womanhood and creating a stronger sense of unity and identity within their population. Without it, they could be more psychologically stunted and harmed than the potential physical harm of the process itself, you just can’t know without hearing the words and considering the views of different sub groups from that culture. It doesn’t mean you have to agree ultimately, it’s just an awareness that no morality can be categorically more right than another and that it’s all situationally constructed. I equally think Smith was right in his actions. He held the belief that what that man did was wrong and wanted to apologise because he was, at that time, associated with him. The lady at the bar called him prudish and he backed off. It takes that level of open mindedness to not press that point further, he didn’t proceed to press how wrong it was and tell her ‘you shouldn’t accept this’, and ‘stand up for yourself’ e.t.c, instead he realised that such behaviour isn’t always harmful, and therefore isn’t always morally wrong; that it changes in different situations and with different people.
@lewis65905 жыл бұрын
@@bushbaby4421 It's not "all situationally constructed". That's taking a rational idea to an irrational extreme. If I believed that everything is relative, and nothing can be assumed to be bad, there would be no reason to interrupt any situation like Alex was describing. Moderation is key as with most things. As they say, be open minded but not so open minded your brain falls out.

The trending page is essentially the same as going to the movie theater without knowing what you want to watch. You see a selection of films across a variety of genres and you pick which one sounds entertaining. Going to the movies with a movie you want to see in mind is what most people on here do where they want to see content creators they enjoy and only watch those videos.

I think Alex is contradicting himself a bit with the Bell Delphine stuff. He's simultaneously saying that she's specifically targeting and trolling "less worldly" men and that's great and empowering, and that she has no responsibility for bringing their weird messages on herself and shouldn't have to deal with it. You don't *have to* deal with those people because you don't *have to* make a career out of collecting donations for teasing nudes or whatever. She seems like a funny person but I can't say I am able to see her as a victim as she sits back and collects NEETbucks. She seems like she's fully aware of what she's doing and the consequences, and that's fine, but I don't have any obligation to pretend she's being victimized or doing anything noble or "empowering".

Regarding the Bath Water thing, that's nothing new. Back in 1961, an Italian artist named Piero Manzoni put his excrements in cans and sold it as "Merda d'Artista" (Artist's Shit). The whole concept of fame and followers was already well understood in the modern art world, starting very early in the 20th century with Duchamps and his signed urinal.

Videos presented as trending are videos that are performing better than usual on that channel. So if Hatfilms channel videos usually get 15 000 views per hour in the first hours and the scooter vlog got 30 000 views per hours, then you will be placed on the trending page. The same goes for the videos of larger channels, if videos there usually get 100 000 views per hour and they make a video that gets 200 000 view per hours, then their video will appear on trending as well. The improvement of view rate compared to average videos on the channel decides your placement on the trending page.

I think what's going to make it a lot easier for people to take the chance to intervene and tell off gross men for their behavior and hold them accountable is if we, as a society, shift our perspective and see intervention not as doing a favor for women, but rather, fixing society in general. If we stop focusing so much on the person on the receiving end and focus instead on intervention in uncomfortable situations as a form of public service, that could help it feel less like a social gamble and (maybe) more empowering.

That's a really important point. It's well-intended, but I think those situations necessitate discomfort for the sake of the greater good. Otherwise it won't really make any difference because that woman's perception of men as a whole isn't the real issue in that situation, so that being the talking point would probably feel more frustrating for her (like, I'd probably think "Is that really the takeaway here?")

what's going to be lost in the new Lion King, is with the old animated characters they would use the mannerisms and expressions of the voice actors to reflect in the animation of the characters. In the new version where the lion looks like a lion, nothing in the way that lion's face moves is going to express whatever star they hire to do the voice. It's going to look like a lion.

A huge part of advocating and genuinely trying to fix the systemic objectification of women is by men intervening when they see a man being gross. Not by talking to her afterward (since that's not technically intervening) but by talking to the guy. Because men who slap a woman's ass in a pub aren't going to listen when a woman objects. They will pay far more attention to another guy because they respect men more than women. Even if he doesn't listen to that guy, I can guarantee, that woman has already subconsciously done the math and knows she can face much worse if she were to intervene for herself or another woman in the same way. Helping fix the problem will entail a lot of discomfort and risk taking for men, but they need to know that for woman, that risk has always been there and their likelihood of success is going to be very different.

The "ice cream lickers" should be prosecuted if they post such a thing online. Furthermore, such a thing does damage the entirety of society, by putting others at risk of exposure disease, as well as spreading an unsanitary behavior as acceptable. Furthermore, something you have mentioned, is that the Jack Arse guys were a bad influence on people, but the majority of the time, their harm would only be done to willing participants, or to themselves.
