On this weeks Video
we have a 2007 Mazda RX-8! the most hated rotary from mazdas RX line.. this car was released after the RX-7 FD and people wanted something to better that car.. but instead mazda gave us the rx8 witch was actually a down grade version so that it was more affordable and there aim was to sell more.. This car has unusual styling unusual door configuration unusual engine unusual everything lol and i kinda like it for that.. this RX8 is no RX7 FD but it is a great little sports car especially for the price! i actually think this car is one of the best value for money weekend fun sports cars! i wouldn't recommend any RX car as a daily as they are a bit finicky with maintenance and they love to drink the fuel... but as a second kinda weekend car these are some of the most fun cars you can buy.. the rotary engines drive like no other and really love to hit redline repeatedly! haha
let me know what you thought of the RX-8??? do you think its worth the money? do you think its a fun second car? or is it just a hairdressers car??
thanks for watching as always and please leave me a message with what cars you'd like to see on the channel..?

Man when i said i'm buying one, everybody said whoaaa, do you know how much fuel and oil uses? well, the oil consumption is not so tragic, always depending on how deep your foot goes on the throttle. And fuel.... A true petrolhead burns PETROL, doesn't care how much, only cares to enjoy the ride... If you want a ,fast car with no consumption, buy a Tesla.

Honestly, after looking on some forums - a rotary burns as much as oil as a piston engine. People just think piston engines don't. And it's the fact that a rotary deliberately burns it that gives it that bad press.

The biggest reason for the hate is not the car its self but the reliability of the engine. This was caused by mazda making certain changes to make it pass emissions. With some care and extra work, more work than a 7 needs, you can make them fairly reliable.

I own a silver, 6 gear cream/black interior with the sliding factory sunroof. I love driving it as much as riding my 996. They both love corners and sound awesome. Keep it looked after and you have no problems. Check oil/water levels regularly. Rotary motors tend to use more oil. Also tape over the taillight key lock before car washes,some car washes force water past the seal and discolor the lens below the key lock. Bad design. This happened to me. $700 factory new/ $300 second hand Australian to replace lens. Wasn't happy. Having said that I've owned mine for ten years and have had no problems mechanically at all. Still drives like its brand new. I love it.

Ah Yes, the RX-8.....I have my 2008, still in my garage. Love this car. Don't care about the haters. Yes, if they would have added the turbos to the RX-8 as originally planned (perhaps 300 horsepower) then tighen up the suspension to handle it, it would have been true successor to the last RX-7. So emissions and other reasons killed that, but the ever present aftermarket could let you make your RX-8 much more of a track machine, if you wanted. However, the amount of power, with the superb manual transmission, and yes, the "soft" suspension, make the RX-8 an excellent everyday driver! Also, love the back two seats, as compared to a "real" sports car with just a wall behind the two seats, in the old days, it was called 2+2, which some of us liked. There is nothing (literally) like driving a rotary engine car. Someone called it the sound of "ripping silk" when revving up the engine. And the smoothness! Fantastic! Car and Driver (and others) gushed about the pure drivability of the RX-8 (Randy Probst loved it too in comparison tests with other more popular cars) Once, Car and Driver named it first in test--years after it came out---and said it was "100 horsepower short of perfect." I guess I would agree, except you don't Have to have the extra 100 horses, and those spoiled car magazine guys will always find something....even if the car still wins the comparison test. And Yes, I also dig the muscle cars....but they are apples and oranges---comparing sports cars to muscle cars. Having a light car with rear wheel drive, can simply not be replicated in a heavy machine. Yeah, the Cayman is so awesome, but you can't touch one for under $80,000, which to me is just obscene. The new Supra is growing on me lookswise, and price is somewhat attainable, however no way many of us will touch it without a manual transmission, period. Look how well the Miata has done over its run.....Many of us are waiting for Mazda to bring back the RX. I am hopeful that they do so with the two seater, and the 2+2, then we can choose. Cheers.

I have owned 5 rotary cars and used them as my primary driver for decades. I can't go back. Now we have driverless cars all the rage and it just breaks me up to think of the future of driving or if there will be one. I enjoy driving but many people do not. Seems like i am on the losing side. Can one imagine the insurance cost, and even the legality involved in the future, if one wants to actually drive their car and not just be carted around like groceries?

If I'm not mistaken (I could be wrong) the holes in the visor have a two-fold purpose. One is part of the gram strategy to reduce weight and the other is so for road visibility. In mine, with the visor down I can't see the road and you can look through the holes to see where you're going.

A lot of hate?! In fact, when the RX-8 was introduced, it was universally LOVED by the worldwide automotive press. Rarely have I known a car so widely praised by automotive journalists in review after review, year after year. The “hate” you speak of was only on the internet, where nearly every yahoo and his brother tore it apart because it was not an RX-7. The irony? The 8 is the superior automobile. (Oh, and those sun visors? Brilliant; they allow you to block the sun and yet still “see” a red traffic light. You control how opaque they are by adjusting the angle, from being able to see through the holes to having them completely blocked.)

@Saboda53
@Saboda53 5 жыл бұрын
Ben Stevens They apparently are flimsy; many have come apart. But I bought a replacement set about ten years ago, just to have them if necessary, and haven’t needed them yet. My 8 is 14 years old and in mint condition. The fact that it’s garaged (doesn’t sit all day in the sun) and that I’m gentle with the visors (I never slam them up or down) has probably been the secret to my good luck.

*The RX-8 never lived up to its overly generous reviews... when the car developed a notorious reputation for having a weak unreliable engine sales plummeted and then dried up completely... doktorbimmer I’ve owned one for over 13 years/48K+ miles and have yet to experience an engine problem. But what do I know, I’m merely a long-term owner. Hmm, perhaps the low resale value is not the result of a “bad engines,” but from the dark, non-stop negative narrative that thrives on internet car forums. You seem to know a lot about the 8; I take it you must be an owner, too. Wait, what’s that? You DON’T own one?? Interesting. Found the video 😉 I'm an old Rotary nut from way back. My wife picked up a stock 40th Anniversary Edition RX8 a year ago and it has not missed a beat. Handling is top notch, gearbox is awesome at stock power levels. While people these days are used to Ported or Turbo rotaries, it's actually nice to drive a naturally aspirated non ported Rotary. You forget how smooth the power delivery is and how free revving they are. I dunno, we will keep ours stock and enjoy the car the way Mazda intended, everything balanced. As for the looks, initially I wasn't sold, but I'm now a fan.

@@RossReviewsau if you get a chance, try a Series 2 R3 RX8 as they have a superior suspension set up over the older models (plus Bluetooth etc..). Even our Series 1 '40th Anniversary Edition' has different mounting points and Bilstein Shocks from factory which is quite an improvement over the already good handling Series 1 standards.

thanks for the points and tips ill consider this in some new videos :) now as for the RX8 ive never owned one so my advice will be from people i know who have told me things about them/there experiences... is that these cars are actually pretty easy to maintain as long as you know what your doing and treat the car well.. if you buy one that hasn't been looked after then you do run the risk of having to deal with a lot of issues. but if you drive the car the way its meant to be driven and understand about flooding the engine and what not to do so you don't damage the apex seals it should be fine! these cars do like to drink tho! so be prepared to pay a lot in fuel..

hey ! so I just turned 16 and I am looking for cars to buy for a good, affordable price and I came across the RX-8. I have done some research on the rotary engines (eventhough Im a noobie when it comes to cars) and I know that they have a bad reputation, but I just keep coming back to this car. What do you recommend? Would an automatic version of this car would be an ideal "first car" to own? Or should I focus on a car with a more common engine. Also, loved the video !

I think there is an OMP or oil metering pump that feeds oil to rotors in order to lubricate apex seals and i guess inside moving parts. I used to think it was "burning" oil by a "leak" but now know it's a natural design function. I use 1 quart of $3 regular oil per 1000 miles so that's about $50 per year. I have not premixed ever, but may try.

@@RossReviewsau I picked up an RX8 a couple of days ago. Plan to sell my wonderful little Miata. I took the 95 MX5 NA to the unofficial/covid19 Miatas at the Gap a couple of weeks ago. The car is genius through economy and simplicity. But now that I'm not a young man, I didn't appreciate difficulty having cell phone conversations ( we used walkie/drivie talkies ), and the excessive Heat from the center cowling/console in the sun on hot days, the marginal A/C, and the rough ride on bumpy and pot hole roads. The RX8 is a bigger car, but addresses every one of my issues while handling surprisingly well; and I own a Boxster and a Z3. So I think that says something about the RX8 chasis.

People bought them in droves. Really it should be and should always have been an enthusiasts car. Never a daily driver. Having driven a few of them they are beautifully balanced like all Mazdas, personally I have always liked the way they look too. If you bought one now as a weekend toy and budget for an engine rebuild, it's actually a decent little sports car for the money.

I think some of the negativity stems from the reputation of the rotary engines, specifically the requirement to have them rebuilt on average every 100-150,000kms. All of the sub $7k examples on the market at the moment are well over the 100k kms mark and would warrant this additional cost being a consideration. Having said that, I've always loved the shape and handling characteristics, but definitely needs more grunt. Nice work.

I'm in the middle of rebuilding mine, it is the easiest car to work on that i've ever had, and easily the best sounding. Lube it right, and it'll be fine. Big thing with is the hate they get from cheaparses and "Ls SwAp TeH WuRlD" yobs, and they think it's hilarious, while still forgetting that piston engines can fail, and, can fail even more spectacularly than a rotor can. I just pulled apart a 300,000km engine that had never been opened, (Still had an engine number on front housing, and typical old engine crap everywhere), and babied by last owner previous to me, and it still cleaned up. It'll be right again after new seals. Run Idemitsu oil and premix, and you'll be right. which is another thing that puts pistonhead yobs off, is premixing/using any old regular oil. Do your research, Get the right lubricants, and it'll live a long time. And yeah, it was never meant to compete with the FD or it's rivals, but, it can still hang with the FD in the twisties, and is actually quicker than the old FC TII.

good to see your rebuilding it and know how to actually maintain and run them.. people just need to get educated about rotaries as they are bloody awesome!

of all the cars mentioned in the video the RX8 has the best chassis. Torsional rigidity is higher than all those mentioned.

I own an FD, but have been in an Rx8 and thought they had an excellent chassis and brake system. But power delivery was not on par with the FD. Looks wise I still can't decide if I love or hate the Rx8. Sometimes I really like them, other times I'm not a fan. I think they look better in darker colours with good wheels and small kit / extensions. But I don't know if I'd own 1. I dont think the 13b renesis is as good as the FD's 13BREW motor.

i think this is a real perspective.. i've driven both cars and i agree with you. would i own one.. i think i would if it was just a weekend car.. the fact they are so cheap, i think it's great to be able to experience a rotary car for such little money
