I've had mine for over 5 years.....and yes the engine went pop.....but, the car was well cheap in the first place, a mint £1800 back in 2014 and the rebuild with a new clutch, a street port and trick exhaust was not much over £2000 and look what you have, practically a new car.........and once run in, I can tell you in tuned form they fly, they feel special, handle with mid engine car balance and give exotic car thrill to a dad on a dad's wage....yes, really. They are not unreliable.....they can flood, but it's easy to de flood em....as long as you keep a check on the oil( and they don't burn much as you may think) ,get em warm before you thrash em,shut em down properly and thrash them daily to free the carbon..they are as reliable as a Honda. I'm fairly sure I can say all this with experience👊

To all the haters, this review is refreshing, the whole reason for this car, its about the driving experience, I've owned one for the last 12 years, used it as a daily and covered 34,000 miles in less than 2 years, its never broke down on me, it has had a rebuild but still never left me stranded at the side of the road, you won't find a cheaper out of the box track ready car, that's also a pleasure to drive.

I know a guy who runs one of these and although it was cheap enough to buy, it drinks oil, does less than 20mpg and costs a bomb on tax. Not to mention higher insurance than similar power cars. Hes also having compression issues and may eventually need a rebuild. It's lovely though, will have to get it on the channel soon. Its obviously like a 'dream car' for people in our age bracket having seen it featured in so many films and games of its time.

My PZ is on 94k on the original engine with no issues. It returns around 12mpg under my size 14 boot. Insurance is double what my Lexus GS300 Sport was. Tax in the UK is over £500. Servicing is expensive, plugs are £80+ and it needs oil top ups every month and premixing in the fuel tank. It is not a car for young people, however it is the most fun car i've ever driven.

OK, I actually own one of these. Great car for the $. Where you find one that’s running well with only 45k miles and is only £1,500, I don’t know, but in the USA, if you’re patient, you can find ones with bad, low compression engines and good bodies for $1500 they don’t have too many miles. If you’re up for the responsibilities of ownership (time, $, wrenching on it) this can be a great value. Best smile per dollar out there in the used sports car market.

They will be more reliable and use less gas than an RX-7. First reason being, the RX-7 is getting very old, second, the FC has a turbo model and all FDs have twin turbos, which make the car more prone to failure and make it use more petrol

Actually, no. Yes, a lovely car, indeed. But it’s sublime, world-class handling are a direct result of its having a tiny, 13” tall rotary engine placed well back into a near mid-engine position. The car was literally designed around that tiny engine; a taller, heavier traditional 4-banger wouldn’t give you that special, unique RX-8 feel.

This is probably the only good review I heard about rx8s and only one that likes it. Most people hate it idk why but if u take care of it it should last 100k or so I seen some with original engine with 100k miles not km and yes it does use a lot of oil but if u add oil take care of it it should last long time . The only reason engines blow because not enough oil added and that’s the problem and that’s why they cheap. If u add 2 stroke oil to gas tank every other fill up and check oil add oil it should last. But I get it a lot of people think it’s Honda Civic or something come on man it’s sports car not a economy car don’t expect it to be as reliable or good gas miles it’s definitely weekend car for sure take care !

@XoloYT 4 жыл бұрын
i can see why young drivers in the uk would stray away from this especially as a young driver since you guys are taxed on everything and everything is pretty pricey in europe, but here in america ive done some shopping around and insurance isn't bad and this would be my first car. every car ive looked at (ive even looked at an s2k) would be $200-220 a month for insurance, and my commute for work is about 50 miles a day which also isn't horrible (and thats on the worst day possible where i have school, go to work, go to the gym, then go home for one day). ive tried looking into getting a 350z but ive seen most manual hardtop ones going for $8,000 with 150k miles, in which case i could pretty much get a used 370z at that point for $2,000 - $3,000 more. an rx8 however at least here would be going for like $6000 and that for a series 2 model with 80-100k miles and a new engine with 20k miles on it (can show an example). i mean even though gas mileage is shit if you like to work on your car, keep up with maintenance, and don't mind the gas consumption i don't see why you wouldn't get this car, especially when they are being sold for so cheap and are so underrated, especially around the track, which is why im buying one soon at 18 since i got the money to. good review!

After spending a long time looking at these, your idea of being 'over 60,000 being due a rebuild' is completely incorrect. It is all to do with how well it's serviced and how it is driven. If they are driven well (Not high RPM when cold, not constant town driving, etc.) with regular, thorough servicing, the original engine can and has lasted in a lot of cases beyond 150,000 miles. I think when buying an RX8 that has been used, you have to be prepared to spend out on a rebuild if required and that goes for any mileage as they have also been known to fail at 40,000.

192s are much cheaper than 231s 192s aren't much slower in the real world, but the extra port and higher rev limit on the 231 are worth paying a bit more for. Oil consumption isn't a problem (it's designed to use oil), tax and fuel are. My 231 is on 90k today, bought for £1500 nearly 3 years ago. Great car, exhilarating to drive on a good road. Absolute nuisance to drive in traffic due the revs / clutch as mentioned in the video. Unreliable? Not necessarily. Buy one that starts hot and cold easily. New or recent coils and plugs (both v. expensive) are essential for preservation. Not much goes wrong apart from the engine. If it blows up, not the end of the world! If you pay 5k for another car with comparable performance, you've much more at risk. Don't get the Toyo exhaust, horribly droning on a long journey. And if you buy one with crap tyres, treat with extreme caution in the wet. Avon ZZ5s are great for just over £100 a corner.

I’m just know as an added plus you will not have to pop off the motor oil so frequently if you used to sell pre-mix in a graphic the OMP function based off of load at a certain RPM . Having two stroke oil in the gas causes a better start up and less friction which means higher compression!! . I could go on and on. FYI you can barely drive a rotary motor just know that you’re essentially spending money just like driving any and every sports car every day driver. The rotary motor affectively is one of the best “Racing “engine ever made essentially because it’s very small displacement putting out large horsepower for inside. The reason for that being if you’re getting 4 power stroke to a piston motor s 1 per rotation. Imagine an eight cylinders firing off all lights on is it same time. By design that couldn’t happen because it was a fucking break and blow up. However the Rotary function is this way very very smooth

your prices are off mate, tis 2024 and in America they are hovering in the middle of the price range 10 000 dollars from there less pleasing to the eye as far as condition 9000 dollars or the best ones 15 000 dollar so yea prices jumped a bunch since this video. I have mine and is properly fun for its intended purpose. Scream high revs and attack turn like nothing else. Not drag racing against an Rx7 fd

Not a great review as others have said, Note you would never buy an RX8 for £1500 without compression above mid 6s, you would never buy without seeing the numbers....... I'm fairly sure that model is the less desirable 192 as it doesnt have headlight washers (or I think xenons), the beep is at 9k. I wouls also point out that an 05 or older is £350 tax a year not £500 for 06 or newer.=, they drink oil because they are supposed to and designed that way, the RX8 is an enthusiast car and those who just like a plug and play car will always hate the RX8 ... seems like you are trying to sell the car for your mate.... if you love it then buy it yourself and tell us how afordable it is for a young driver....... that said I am 51 years old, I have 2 8s one I paid £250 as a spares or repair, gave it a service and it flew through the MOT the other I paid £100 and is a project waiting (plus I have another PZ I broke for spares I swapped for copper and old car batteries.... Ilove these cars , but for me as a weekend car in the summer

Brilliant cars, drive superb, refined interior and looks for the year, sound great, shit engines and not powerful enough.... Think Mazda missed out on a decent gap in the market for a 300 ish bhp sports car to match the 350z etc... much better looking, must better chassis/ driving etc. Should have come with the 2/2.3 engine turbo'd rather than an NA rotary.. I got lucky with my 231, compression was perfect and with a few tasteful mods the sound and flame throwing never got boring, as did the ease of going sideways and the b road blasting, fuelling it did tho :(

RX8 owner here... you would be EXTREMELY lucky to get a good one for 1000gbp. 5000gbp might get you something decent but the reality is you're getting something around the level of an s2000... expect to have paid that much by the time you've got the car sorted. Engine life is entirely dependant on your driving spirited and most of these were bought by accountants when they were new so aren't in good shape these days. I'd recommend an RX8 to any enthusiast willing to actually put money into their car, it is one of the most fun cars I've ever driven, including much more expensive offerings from Porsche etc however it's a complete misconception that they are cheap fun. You pay for the experience. That all said, once you have it rebuilt and restored, they are reliable as hell when maintained properly and I know a couple of rx8s with 160k+ on the original engine with no issues.

Sorry but, this is appalling advice. High insurance, high road tax, very poor mpg, servicing is every 3k not 6k if you want it to last. That engine is shocking when it comes to reliability and maintenance. Expensive service parts and plugs stick in the engine all the time. So 1500 for a average car "not a good one", 1000 on tax and insurance, then 1500 on all the extra crap just to keep it running. Plus extra premix oil in the fuel, or a secondary oil injection tank and late model injector. The parts are horrifically expensive and a lot is still mazda only. You can't just start it up drive it 3 foot to get on the drive, coz if you do and it have a poor ignition system, you flood the thing. If you are a young driver, please go and buy something else... you will regret this "I DID!" Btw if it spends more time getting fixed than being driven. Its not worth the drive.

I also owned a rx8. Bought it when I turned 18 and I get what your saying “oh boy trust me, I do” but it’s more or less for the love of said car. Yeah it’s a pain keeping up with the oil and trying to avoid starting it up and driving half a mile and shutting it off “flooding” & honestly you and I can both say the car is/was a pleasure in Itself to drive. I remember when I owned one and would get bored or just lonely at night and just go for a drive. Returning home I’d have a fresh mindset and it was a car I can honestly say I’d always look back at mentally and physically when walking away for the day. It did eventually blow up on me but it was more or less my own blissful ignorance 😂 but what I’m basically trying to say is I’d never trade those memories & experiences for anything. Kinda thinking about buying another note that I’m older and wiser.

They suffer due to bad maintenance and reckless drivers/owners that have no idea on how to treat them. Healthy ignition, battery and an uprated starter from the last version (R3), and the car runs smoothly.
