Quentin Tarantino's 2015 film was met with mixed reviews. A handful of critics savaged the film for being ugly and violent - but perhaps this was the point of the movie. This video will look at how violence is portrayed in The Hateful Eight.

The wars of America, between the North and the South here, hating all the people that we otherwise wouldn’t....was brought about by liars and the lies we live by to justify all the killing. This film is full of liars. Everyone is lying. The Yankee and the Confederate Renegade are dying, but hang the lies and deceit in the end. Then read that letter, having a chuckle about the lie that kept them alive. I found it to be a commentary on America, the division that we have allowed for centuries, believing the lies about ourselves and others.

I got a theory mannix was not one of the hateful 8 mannixes men were named after his father he was the Shariff, he doesn't shoot the unarmed, tries to keep piece with the old man(who is hateful) and warren, never lies tries to befriend everyone, the only hatefulness you can accuse him of is racial but clearly he sides with sam Jackson's character despite race or the killing of on old man he respects fed and gave the blanket off his back. and still doesn't side with the gang and even goes under sams command when he asked if he can shoot joe gage.

We met the guy, what, ten minutes of film time before he died? Sure, he wasn't a nice guy in that time, but he still wasn't a major player.

I think the main death that caught my eye was the new zealander woman. Even after being shot by the man she was just talking to; even with no expalantion or reason, she still reaches out to him for help. Even in that moment she was trying to engage in a form of social engagement. She was trying to build a bridge of communication, and in less than 3 seconds, the man just shoots her again. Showing how violence makes people close off to outside communication, which is how they can justify their violence. To quote Che' Guevara, "shoot, you are only going to kill a man". That's the mindset the killers end up in.

The only character I empathized with were the horses left in the stable. After every character died they were left to their own devices, unless another traveling group found them after the blizzard subsided.

Yeah the guitar store or museum that owned it and gave it to Tarantino were pissed that their $10~20,000 guitar was destroyed. The museum vowed to never hand Tarantino any musical instruments again.

The insurance company refused to pay out on the antique Martin since it was priceless. The museum was never told there would be a scene in which a guitar was smashed. The museum refuses to loan out any guitar for any film now. Quentin ruined it for everyone.

Can't believe you didn't mention the most diabolically cruel and evil act in the movie and the biggest alienating factor for Warren; how he dealt with the Generals son. Absolutely heinous and if you still was holding onto the idea that Warren was some kind of good guy, that is thrown out the window after that scene.

@@troubledsole9104 I almost had the same feeling (it felt in bad taste) but really the scene exists just to make sure everybody hates Warren as much as the others. As this video discusses, being on the "good side," does not excuse extreme sadistic violence. OR you can interpret that Warren was just making all that shit up, which is what I think is true now. He just said it to get Smithers to draw first in order to legally murder him, basically. Let's not forget that Smithers massacred surrendered soldiers and his son hunted black people for money, no one in that entire conversation was innocent.

Ironically one of the least "violent" characters in this film is the racist confederate soldier. Mannix was pretty agreeable throughout the film, up until the hanging Dommergue part.

i'm writing this halfway through the video, so if you touch on it later i'll delete my comment, but i think the point of this film is that there is no "good guy" i think the point of the hateful 8 is that there is nobody to root for at all, they are all bastards who kill and hurt others at will, there is no real protagonist, and no antagonist, it's just a bunch of people in a room. that's the genius of it {edit - ok so technically channing tatum's gang are the antagonists, but not really, because their crimes take up such a small part of the run time, we don't know or care about their victims, maybe if we got to know them before that scene then i'd consider the gang as the antagonists, but personally i think my previous point still stands}

John Ruth is brutal, but I think he still qualifies as an honorable man, especially given the nature of his profession. He never lies about who he is and he treats every life equally and judges accordingly. He’s even willing to judge Warren on several occasions. I’m not saying he’s perfect but he’s definitely hot a stronger moral standard than the other characters. And as for his beating Daisy around, yes it is cruel but he seems to do it mostly when she crosses a line and she’s also a desperate manipulative criminal who is trying to antagonize the people she’s with. She isn’t just sitting around being innocent singing sweet nothings, and frankly shouldn’t be mouthing off trying to harass people in general. I know I don’t just insult some big guy at a bar, at least not without expecting possible retaliation. It may be easy for the squeamish to not wanna see a woman get brutalized, but this is also a woman who’d probably do worse if she were in the situation of power. Plus John is the only one who seems to value life, hence his no killing rule he has for himself. Even when the General got shot he was the one debating the legality of the actions taken. But again maybe I’m being easy on John given the nature of his job, which requires him to either kill a person in cold blood, or drag a desperate person to jail to face legal justice. Given the options of his profession he does take the better route.

I always found The Hateful Eight the most underwhelming, given there was A) a mystery element in it, only to be a cop out. B) and I guess I was having high expectations at the time, maybe some sort of grand standoff or some form of a epic climax. After listening to your analysis, I guess it does work because guys being violent for the sake of it. Given its setting where violence like that is the norm (being a Wild Western and all). While I still think this movie is still the most weakest of Tarantino's films (close to Inglorious Bastards being the weakest) personally, however I see the point of a film just showing casting violence in its simplist form, not in any good/bad light, just like it is.

they had most of their arm strength left, albeit while experiencing excruciating pain and they could've thrown the rope over a horizontal roof support beam and had warren hold it while mannix got the rope around her neck, the scene cuts so that it can be left up to the imagination imo
