I decided to watch this without reading the comments. For the most part, I have faith in old movies because the quality in acting feels so much more authentic to me. And this movie did not disappoint! I have heard of the novel, always wondered what the title itself meant. I have never read the book, seen the movie, or any of its versions. I look forward to watching The Innocents now. If this is the version of the original and I find it this good, then I have a lot to look forward to. I don't want to spoil the ending for anyone but I do want to share my sentiment for the children. They were innocent the whole time. And I want to say I am so impressed by the little actor that played Miles. The ending was stunning...and unexpected.

I just learned the great actress Diana Rigg died yesterday,September 10th 2020, at the age of 82. This woman was one of the most amazing actresses and has performed in many movies and shows. I first saw her in the Avengers acting alongside Patrick McNee. Loved the series. She married James Bond in one of those movies.For more modern roles a couple roles was one in Doctor Who and also a part in Game of thrones. This lady had an amazing career and was highly respected. She will be missed. RIP Dame Diana Rigg. You'll be missed by your many admirers. As you watch this movie please give her a moment in your thoughts. She played Mrs Grose in this movie.

Unlike the garbage version produced recently by Netflix under the name “The Haunting of Bly Manor”, neither the original book, nor the truly terrifying 1961 movie contain the obligatory gay/lesbian agenda foisted on the paying subscribers of Netflix.

The thing that chilled me the most was how the little boy that played Miles could act like a grown man, in mannerisms, and mentality, it was scary to me. And the way that Valerie Bertinelli's character, Helen Walker, was unnerved and slightly afraid of the boy at first, that's how I would have been around him too, if I had to be a nanny to such a creepy boy.
@sandramullikiin56906 жыл бұрын
A lot of people here compared the movie to an original from the 1960's; But, I never seen the original. Therefore, I'm basing this movie on its own standing. I thought it had some pretty decent old actors in it from back in the '70's-'90's. Not bad for an old movie. Thanks for sharing.
@sandramullikiin56906 жыл бұрын
Ok, I went and looked up the supposed original "The Innocent (1961)" film and watched it. One, its black and white; two, the movies, though they differ a bit, are too much a like to really say that the older one was better. I think people go on how they felt when they seen the first movie (the original - the innocent), which most seen as a kid or teenager. This is sooo unreliable and here's why - My generation was the first to see the most frightening shark movie ever "Jaws " and the most scariest zombie movie ever "Dawn of the Dead". Both, came out when I was just a young teenager and we seen them at a Drive Inn Theater. Drive Inn Theaters don't even exist anymore now, sadly... love the experience of seeing scary movies outside away from home and in the car. Atmosphere really helps in these movies. Also, now that I'm older and have seen tons of both shark and zombie movies, the famous old scariest ones are well, quite frankly no where near as scary today. Back then, everything being seen was so new and seemed so realistic. Yet, now you can watch them and see just how fake Jaws the shark was when he was up close and personal, LoL . And of course, the zombie movies, as all movies, have come a long way too. So, there you have it. Most movies are not as good 25-45 years later as they were when they came out. Now, there's an exception to this rule with some movies that are more intellectual than visual, like The Who done it kind of investigative movies, etc. Most of those would probably be just as good today as they were back when they first came out. But, most things that involve a visual effect, especially in the paranormal areas, need to be closer to the last decade. Personally, I liked this movie 'The Haunting of Helen Walker' better than the one before. Because, it is in color and the acting and all was, I thought, better in this one. So, there you have it.

I love this version! First, the children are EXCELLENT. Particularly the boy who plays Miles. He's charming and creepy all at once. You really believe that a creepy man like Peter Quint is in his body! Very good job with him and Flora's dynamics. I think it was a good idea to make Mrs. Walker a widow (the nanny was originally a young girl about 20 in other versions) but Valerie Bertinelli plays the part very well. She plays naive and knowledgeable very well. It is very possible that Mrs. Walker feels guilty about being attracted to the dashing Mr. Goff--women often feel disloyal to their deceased husbands in the Victorian Era. Also, you get the feeling that Mrs. Walker's husband was maybe not interested in the physical side of marriage, so Mrs. Walker might have been repressed. So the question still remains, are the children haunted? Or is Mrs. Walker just having psychological problems? I love, love, love the amazing Diana Rigg in this. The setting of Bly is also beautiful--a perfect setting for a sinister story. The actors who played Quint and Jessell were spot on, I thought too. Very nice effort. (Check out the Innocents with Deborah Kerr she was amazing as the governess)

This is a really enjoyable film based on Henry James's novel 'A Turn Of The Screw'. Henry James was the brother of the famous philosopher and psychologist William James. William's ideas centred on how we know the world (epistemology). In this film it's ambiguous as to whether what the nanny is experiencing is real or imaginary, and that's what makes it so eerie. Henry and William shared similar interests. Henry James has been described as a novelist who wrote like a psychologist and William James as psychologist who wrote like a novelist. They both were very interested in spiritualism and attended a variety of séances. They were very aware of charlatanism but also in those occasions which defied ordinary explanation and which challenged them to ask what is reality and how do we know what we presume to know.

quite possibly one of the creepiest thrillers Ive seen. Love it though! Oh My these kids are fabulous actors.

The original film, The Innocents, was a masterpiece in every way. A great deal of that is due to the direction and the acting and the delicate subtly of the elements of the original story - are there truly ghosts or is the character of the governess a very suggestible woman who knows very little about children. This version, while very well photographed and in color, just can't live up to the 1961 film. People today are generally not so educated and demand direct spelling out of all detail.

The original I thought was a Henry James novella, no?
@allenkracalik76625 жыл бұрын
Yes, this version of the story is a bit more explicit, but still quite effective. I wish the 1959 teleplay with Ingrid Bergman was generally available; caught the live broadcast and know video exists. The Turn of the Screw remains the only ghost story --if, in fact, a ghost story it is--to actually frighten me.

I love the Deborah Kerr version, and the novella, and will forever see this as the ghost story James himself said he intended it to be. I saw “The Innocents” for the first time when I was 12, I watched it with my mom. I think it’s what started me on a lifelong love of ghost stories, especially the old classics.

It seems to suggest that the spirit of Miles' violator had completely consumed his young soul, replacing the emptiness with his own twisted presence. Once he'd been 'exorcised', there was nothing left to keep the body active...most intriguing.

The problem with this telling of this classic is that it comes right out and admits there are ghosts. The genius of the book and the original movie, The Innocents, with Debra Kerr, is that it never does. Mixed with extreme innocence, religion, and sexual repression, is this back story, so that you’re never truly sure if the ghosts are real or if the nanny is imagining it all. The innuendo is part of the creepiness. You’re never sure how innocent anyone really is. I knew it was going to be rough when they had the main character be a widow. It’s a good effort, and maybe one you can like, if you haven’t read the book or seen the original movie.

Valerie Bertinelli is far better as an actress in this remake than Johdi May in the 1999 Turning of the Screw.
@allenkracalik76625 жыл бұрын
One major flaw in the 1999 version was the actor playing Quint, too ordinary, not sinister.
@danphillips27845 жыл бұрын
@@floraflorabunda2216 The Jodhi May version made the governess seem like she was mistaking ordinary behavior from the kids for perversion. There has to be something a little off about the children for this story to even work...it can be taken as a straight up ghost story or as a governess in above her head dealing with victims of child abuse.

The story, narration and exposition of this film are psychologically insightful. It's not surprising that it's originally based on a novel by Henry James and not on a screenplay by some tv-screenwriter. The acting is good too.

Possibly Valerie Bertinelli's best performance! I loved "The Innocents" but have always found it so oblique as to just be somewhat confusing (probably due to the restraints of the time period in which the film was made). "The Others" took the concept into a different dimesnsion, literally. I like that here they intentionally attempted to incorporate story points and facets that were left out in "The Innocents." Diana Rigg's character was fleshed out considerably, which gave the characters a deeper "history." I think the brightness of the garden, having a group of people in the house, the beauty of the location were an attempt to contrast the brightness and beauty with the darkness inside (a methaphor for the "angleic children"). The brightness and color make it very hard to maintain the kind of grip that the darkness of "The Innocents" had. This script still did a worthy job of having all of Mile's lines be very opaque and open to interpretation. If you enjoy seeing different "translations" of a really solid ghost story, this is definitely worth your time. I do agree it can not compare with "The Innocents" but that is not really fair, a bit like comparing all paintings to the Mona Lisa. Thank you for this video!

'The Turn of the Screw' by Henry James has fascinated since it was written in 1898 more for what is doesn't say than for what is does. In Victorian times the subject of sex and child abuse were taboo. This version makes the mistake of making James's virginal, innocent governess into a young widow which removes half the horror because in the original novella the naive governess was not only up against two highly abusive ghosts but two very experienced sexually mature children who preferred the hedonistic to the repressed puritanical. Or was it? Perhaps the whole haunting is in the imagination of the sexually immature governess and the children are innocent and under the charge of a mentally confused woman. Is she or isn't she? That is the question. When asked Henry James said "Think the worst!".

I do remember Valarie Bertinelli being on Ancestry she was a decedent of Longshanks, Edward I of England. You may remember him from the movie 'Braveheart' (Sir William Wallace, Scottish hero played by Mel Gibson.) He succesfully took away the autonomy of Wales and although named the 'Hammer of the Scots' it is a misnomer he failed to hammer the independent country of Scotland. Still an independent country and free nation. In fact it was the Scottish royal family that inherited the thrown of England. If things had gone as they should Mary, Queen of Scots, born a Queen, would have also been Queen of France and England. Still her son James the VI of Scotland became James I of England.
