The jumpscare is probably the most iconic part of the show, alongside the Bent Neck Lady reveal, but for me the the most chilling, creepiest moment of the episode has to be “I never build you kids a tree house”
@ILJtheFirst27 күн бұрын
The tree house is the only room to be seen by 3 siblings. I assume Theo was in there because she tore up Luke's No Girls Allowed sign.

There’s one other really shocking reveal moment that completely broke my brain, but it seems a lot of other people had already figured it out beforehand. I’m still not sure if I envy them or pity them for not getting smacked with the full force of the reveal like I did.

The placement of that jumpscare is just BRILLIANT. You get so invested to their fighting and you lower your guard and BAAM!
@Karaokuma27 күн бұрын
Not only that, but it leads to the sisters reconciling, as Nell wanted it to. That is genius-level writing.
@elheber27 күн бұрын
You might be letting down your guard for a jumpscare, but the best jumpscares slowly raise the tension before snapping. Their slowly escalating argument was the tension builder. So clever.
@islaythejabberwokky27 күн бұрын
It makes Theo's monologue that much more impactful tbh, because your heart is already pounding from the jumpscare. The whole scene, monologue included, is a masterpiece
@brandon693327 күн бұрын
Even more than that, the multiple scenes prior of Steven and the dad talking in the car lull you into thinking the car is safe. Mike Flanagan is a genius.
@briangonigal397427 күн бұрын
I actually hate jumpscares, they’re almost always cheap & unearned and usually downright nonsensical if you actually think about it . But this? Just might have been the greatest jump scare in the history of cinema, and it’s just the capper on a series chock full of jump scares that are fully earned & valid.

Kate Siegel is SO CRIMINALLY OVERLOOKED in this show compared to the others. For most of the series her performance is a MASTERCLASS in subtlety, Theo has her little outbursts at times but usually she's quite reserved and stoic, but then in this one Kate finally got to truly UNLEASH and she's INCREDIBLE.

I normally don't jump scare easily, and not bad when I do. But HOLY HELL, Headphone flew off, My cigarette launched out of my hand and hit the monitor, almost fell out of my seat, screamed like a little school girl and spent the next 20 seconds trying to compose myself, which of course led to several minutes of me laughing hysterically. I REALLY wish I had been recording it. because it would have been so funny to see me (6'4", 280lbs, Grizzly Adams lookalike) totally losing his shit. Then to follow it with Theo's EPIC monologue, always puts a tear in my eye every time.

I love the little clues that Flanagan leaves throughout the show. Especially the ones about the tree house - for example when Olivia is looking for Luke pretty early on in the show, Steve asks her if she's checked the tree house and she's very confused by this but we don't linger on the moment for too long. As more and more of these things happen (including a scene in this episode) where the adults are not sure what the kids are talking about, it starts to become easier to pick up on. That's where the fun started for me as a viewer who is obsessed with patterns and loves figuring out why certain moments are included/emphasised over others. I love a Chekhov's gun moment. Anyway, I'm being intentionally vague with my examples because this links to a reveal in episode 10 that I don't want to accidentally spoil. But wait... I just realised they've already watched the entire show it's just not up on youtube yet...

I was laying down on my couch when I watched this episode for the first time and when Nell just popped out and screamed it felt like I jumped so high I was going to hit the ceiling. Maybe the best jump scare of all time and your reaction was perfect. While it's not Mike Flanagan's best series, "The Midnight Club" - also on Netflix and geared more towards a YA audience so not as overall scary as his others - has an episode with like 10 jump scares all in a row. It's nuts.

The Nell jumpscare is my favorite, she's telling her sisters to knock it off 😆I can relate! When me and my sister fight either with each other or with our mother (the twin brothers are never involved in an argument), I swear my dad makes his presence known! He passed away October 19th 2020 and he was the referee of the family and always made us talk it out. He obviously still doesn't like us fighting. It happens more often now that he's gone and mom's behavior is...something. She complains because he doesn't visit her anymore and I told her it's because she's done me and my sister terrible the last couple years, mainly me. I do look the most like my dad and I feel like she takes out her anger of him "leaving" her out on me. We see and hear him all the time. But mostly when we fight.
