Agreed 100%. And the amazingly clever thing is that mental health is used by the family members to explain away the hauntings of Hill House. When in fact the hauntings are what caused some of the Crain family members to become mentally ill or unstable. So even though mental illness was not the root cause of their trauma (the house was), it still ended up playing a very important role in the life of this family. Every single instance of the Crain's actually being haunted in Hill House and how they reacted (i.e. "I just want to wake up so badly") can be translated to how a suicidal person feels in the real world. Just brilliantly done.

The ending made me cry and still continues to, it seems to relate to a lot of people and they don't really think about it until after. Nell struggled with depression and mental health which a lot of people struggle with including me. That's what made me cry cuz it was so relatable and personal. A lot of reactions from the ending of this episode have mostly the same result...tears. You realize how Nell feels, even as a ghost she still isn't seen and yet her family leaves. This show is a masterpiece, it's scary but more scary since you realize the "scares" are more personal everyday life struggles.

this episode is pretty incredible with the way it’s shot but if you listen hard enough, there are a couple times when Steve (adult) does kind of fumble his words, and tbh I think it adds to the very human element of this show. nobody speaks perfectly all the time in real life lol and of course, Nellie’s story breaks my heart again. all she wanted was to be noticed and validated, and her family couldn’t even give her that in death. great reaction! (you’re gonna have to get used to the emotional rollercoaster to get through the rest of the season!)

Nell and Luke remind me of my relationship with my brother. We were really close. Inseparable. Had our own language we were only able to understand. He has severe mental illness and its wedged a knife between us but when I hear Nell say "You couldn't see me." Just reminds me of all the times my brother called for help but we were so busy arguing, in our own world that he was invisible and it breaks my fucking heart. My brother is in a better place mentally now but that little scene just took me back to when I was 12 again, just me and my younger brother against the world.

@@laurenellorente Exactly right! It was only five takes for the entire episode, with the longest being the one at the very start, lasting over 15 minutes! This episode is so f'in spot on. I didn't know how true this is til' I became a parent, but for real: when you see your kids, you see them across the spans of their lives. Especially in stressful, super-celebratory, or heavy moments. In every gesture, laugh, heartache, and victory I see the babies I held, the stumbling toddlers, the grouchy adolescents. I see them in every incarnation, all their moments condensed into one. And it's all flawed and crazy and perfect. My adult daughter is asleep in the next room; at rest she is her baby self made over. Sounds cheesy, but it's a real thing. Especially for moms, but dads have it too. If your parents sometimes seem overly interested, overbearing, or hyper-sensitive, cut 'em some slack. The most severe fuckups and ungrateful assholes all flashback to innocent kids for parents. We can't help it.

I love your reaction, man… so human, so humble. This episode is so f...ing good! First of all, the long tracking shots. The acting, the choreography between the actors, young and adults, the camera and the rest of the crew to get the shots in one take… Amazing! Second: the writing. This episode made me care so much for Shirley! Her entire world crumbles around her in this episode: First, she has to prepare, make up, dress her little dead sister and put everything toghether for the funeral, everything has to be PERFECT! And she knows she has to stay in charge of everything when the rest of the family arrives. But suddently there’s a storm outside. Theo is drunk and she doesn’t care, her addict brother Luke is coming to fuck it all up. And then she knows that EVERYONE has betrayed her: Theo has betrayed her by taking the money from his brother’s book and she tells her to leave the guest house, and to make things worse, even her husband confesses they took the money too, without her knowing it. Then someone is making fun of her job (the only thing she thinks she is good at) and her dead sister by putting buttons on her eyes, the lights go out and the coffin breaks apart with Nell in it. The coffin she so lovingly prepared. She finds her husband and Theo in a strange situation and her mind (or the house) starts playing tricks with her again, there’s that guy with the drink looking at her. Her world is falling apart completely. The control that ruled her life is an illusion. That’s probably Shirley’s worst day ever. EVER. But Theo is still my favorite character. Shirley:-You’re drunk! Theo:-Nope! (thinks again) Yep! But I’m right Priceless bit of humor! And I also love how they use the thunder sound effects to create tension, instead of the typical music cue. Great episode and great reaction.

I'm only 3min40sec into this video and I had to pause it and say thank you for being one of the only reactors who has actually commented multiple times at this point, on the long single takes. A lot of people don't even notice it and that's why it's brilliant. It just sucks us in to the scene like we're there or watching a live play. It's subtle yet effective and extremely powerful - not to mention, extremely hard to pull off in film making for so many reasons.

Na I don't think many watch the show anymore. it started off great but they became to hungry for activity. So they started to make it happen themselves. Derek Acorah played a big hand in the downfall of the show but it's funny how things always seemed to happen whenever Stuart was around. They should of just kept it real and if something happens on a investigation then great but if not, then ok.. at least you was being real with the viewers.... but they have to think about ratings so I think they tried to fake it... It's a shame really...

This episode was done with 4 or 5 long shots (the longest was 17 minutes) which is insane. I also love how the mistakes and minor flubs were kept in. Like how Hugh stepped on a piece of the chandelier and how sometimes the cast might stumble over their words. When Theo fell, it was also a mistake that was kept in. No one broke character and Mike Flanagan said that they treated it like a play. They'd have rehearsals and then they'd just go for it. The mistakes make it feel more authentic. Also Nellie at the end had me in tears too, it's definitely an emotional episode. Mike Flanagan did an awesome thread on this episode on twitter that you should check out... maybe after the show, I can't remember if there's spoilers but it's good: twitter.com/flanaganfilm/status/1059105688541118464

Awesome reaction man, this episode all hit us in the feels. This was my favorite episode of the show and I was looking forward to see your reaction so much, wasn't disappointed. When you'll be done with the show you should watch this episode's making of, it's short but it shows you how they managed to get the "one-takes" and everything, that's really impressive. It's called " The Haunting of Hill House | Featurette: The Making Of Episode 6 ". (Oh and at 9:59 they actually really lowered down the cameraman with a sort of lift, you'll see :)

Ok, probably a bit late commenting, but I do need to pass my thoughts on for consideration as Im pretty impressed with this whole show and Ep 6 in particular. 1) the entire interior set of Hill House and the Harris funeral home was built conjoined, before filming of even the first episode started, just so Mike Flanagan could get one single transition shot in one single episode. 2) the entire conjoined set was a maze of hidden passages and hidey holes so cast and crew could move around unseen when off camera. 3) yes, they built an elevator so the cameraman could do a smooth transition between the two storeys, and then the crew had to hide the rig and themselves in about ten seconds before the camera swung back. 4) they halted filming for a month, rehearsed twice a day six days a week, with fifteen cast and thirty crew, before turning a single reel. 5) the only CGI used was the shattering windows, and that was for safety. 6) there were no hidden cuts, the only cuts were the ones we see. 7) these technical achievements are vastly impressive old-school film making at its best. And yet, overriding all this effort and rehearsal and intense work, the one thing everyone will remember is the final static shot of Nell standing beside her casket and saying “None of you could see me. No-one could see me.” Seriously, this script was cruel.
