Mr. Dudley's monologue in the basement is to this day, one of the finest performances I've seen from an actor. Just bone-chilling. The actor, Robert Longstreet, said he was terrified for the scene and had trouble getting through the first three takes they did because whenever he got to the part about his daughter it became too painful and his memory would blank. The director, Mike Flanagan, said "We got it, we can piece it together anyway we want with reaction shots from Hugh but if you get through it once all the way, it'll be art." Robert said "Well, hell yeah, let's do that." So they did a fourth take, all in one shot and that's what's in the show. Astounding. He's so so good in this. Love him.

I think Olivia was the most susceptible in the family to the influence and power of the house since she were "sensitive" as well as having those terrible migraines (which were probably exacerbated by living in the house, wearing her down mentally). Theo had her own version of being sensitive but she was fearless and had a different kind of sensitivity which probably saved her. The twins were probably also sensitive in their own way and being so young they were also easily haunted and broken down by the fear and influence of the house and it's ghosts, explaining their issues when they became adults.

There are a couple of shows that are really great but I don't think anyone has reacted to, that I think you two would love. The first one is "The Terror" with Jared Harris from 'Chernobyl' loosely based on the true story of the voyage of British ships the HMS Erebus and HMS Terror that got trapped in ice in the Northwest Passage in the Canadian Arctic. The show is based on a book that takes the real incident and adds a horror element. It's a brilliant series. The other show is "DEVS" which is a sci-fi thriller written and directed by Alex Garland, who did 'Annihilation' and 'Ex Machina'. Both are one season only (well, 'The Terror' had a second season with a different real life storyline mixed with a horror element) and they are both great series. Maybe check out the trailers to see what you think, but I highly recommend both. SO excited for these last few episodes, and get the tissues ready, especially in the last episode.

I know it's not a horror movie for October, but you guys really should add Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003) to your library (or theater?). It's an insanely underrated movie that shows Russell Crowe, Paul Bettany, and especially Director Peter Weir at their very best. Though historical fiction, it has a shocking amount of accuracy while not sacrificing story. The filmmakers even went so far as to purchase a replica, era appropriate frigate and taught the cast to sail it. Worth consideration at the very least.

It's not surprising this show didn't get Emmy nominations to me. I've seen great writing and acting go completely unrecognized on some shows over the years. Also, I think much like in film, awards are biased against horror in TV as well. Bates Motel is one of my top 3 shows of the last 20 years and over it's 5-year run, it almost never got recognized for the phenomenal writing and acting from Vera Farmiga and Freddie Highmore, although Farmiga got nominated once for the first season and that was it. Another thing is that even though this is a limited 1-season series, the Emmys always tend to cherry pick and re-nominate the same actors over and over again no matter what shows they are on, which doesn't leave a lot of room for fresh blood. Timothy Hutton is the only actor on Hill House that as far as I know has been nominated for an Emmy prior to it's premiere, but he's a veteran. The rest of the cast are pretty young and relative newcomers to the TV landscape. Even Henry Thomas and Carla Gugino, who are in their 40s, hadn't done much TV to my re-collection prior to Hill House.

I wonder if Mr. Dudley thinks Elliott from E.T. won't believe him if he tells him there are ghosts, or if he can't warn him clearly without being punished by the ghosts? Or maybe Mrs. Dudley has asked him not to tell? Yeah, it's true that Hill House didn't win any awards. Most awards shows have a notorious bias against genre fiction, but ESPECIALLY against horror. It was the same situation when Toni Collette got snubbed for her acting in Hereditary. Awards shows hate horror, no matter how good it is. Literally the ONE and ONLY time I've ever seen a horror movie get nominated/win anything at the Oscars was Get Out, and that was clearly just because of the identity politics of it starring black people (not a problem with me, obviously, I loved Get Out, but that idpol shit really is a constant obsession with Hollywood). Yeah, people are better off just rejecting the prestige of these award shows. They mean nothing. They're just a bunch of snobs in fancy suits and dresses deciding which show or which picture appealed most to their political or egotistical sensibilities. More often than not, the movies and shows that I keep seeing stand the test of time are the ones that ordinary people watch over and over again, not the ones that necessarily win the most awards.

This show did not receive award nominations that just goes to show it's completely and totally rigged... If there's a haunted category or a scary category or even drama or a fiction category... Any of those areas heck even cinematography. Honestly I think this show should have swept the board in all of those categories in addition to maybe some acting awards. (I do wish there was a bit more diversity however they did add in plenty of side characters that are of diversity and they are dealing with a white family as the main actors so I get that and the help at an expensive house would probably be white if their families been doing it for generations. So I get they're working with what they could but that's my only gripe about this show.
