I think many people fail to realize that artists have certain styles and personal ways of making things, just because something is very stylized doesn't mean it's necessarily "bad" it's just that person's style even if somewhat niche

While people did take issue with the redesign, one of the biggest reasons the video got so much hate was the creators complete lack of research into the show. She claimed to watch it and yet one of her alterations to Charlie's design was to add horns because "it's weird she didn't have horns in the show as a demon". She showed a complete disregard for the source material and trashed on the designs with blatantly false information and was poorly researched. It's one thing to criticize a design choice. It's another entirely to be entirely wrong about an observation and try and "fix it".

Viv's designs definitely ain't perfect, but critiquing them without actually doing much research is pretty pharisaic. She's a great artist that does a lot of research into the topics she talks about, but it's clear she didn't bother to review the lore of Hazbin Hotel much before making the video.

It is okay to redesign the characters. It is never okay to be an obnoxious and saying that your redesign is way more preferable than the original canon design in a rude way. I made my redesign of characters from other shows. I’m not an obnoxious. I love doing redesign for fun. If it’s actually my style, I still do it for fun and not being obnoxious. 3:00 vaggie being made chubbier is so ironically hilarious to me. She's literally the ONE single character who by no means would be overweight in any way shape or form. She's a soldier. A warrior. One whos specifically trained and worked under ADAM the biggest misogynistic crazy dude bro in the show. He literally went out of his way to make his whole Exorcist army all slim women with nearly identical body types that he found attractive and also worked as the whole having the same silhouette thing so that they all look the same when in uniform. yeah, but she also, for all intents and purposes, was "kicked out of heaven" and has been in hell for around two years (iirc). who is to say her regimen wouldn't have changed over that time? she even makes a comment to carmilla that she's not used to fighting with long hair-- you could easily use the same line of thinking to justify her falling out of shape and being out of practice with fighting. just change "long hair" to "put on some weight"-- there are many ways you could spin it where it would make sense for vaggie to have a different body type from the other exorcists at this point in the story.

I doubt she'd fall out of shape since her relationship with Charlie is pretty blatantly her trying to be her "guardian angel" for lack of a better term and protect her. So she's still keeping in shape to be adept for combat and correcting/stopping any problematic Sinners that attempt anything at the hotel

For me I think the main reason why a lot of people hate redesigns so much is because most (not all, just a good chunk of them) do the redesigns without even knowing the story first. So when they show their new designs, a lot of the needed themes and references are just gone and the character would no longer make sense within the context of the story. If we compare Alastor original to her redesign, you will not be able to tell he was the radio demon, losing his iconic mic and vintage aesthetic. He instead looks like a talk show host or reporter with a more modern or retro look. Not really fitting his "radio demon" title. Even more so, Alastor having deer antlers would mostly be a refrenced to him being a cannibal. Here being represented that hes a wendigo. A monster (usually with a deer theme) who eats people. So her redesigns dont really sound like "I think would be better for the show" but more "I saw this in the internet and didnt like it, so heres a better version that I did" kind of thing.

I think redesigns are fine as a small exercise to do to test yourself and see how you can use your art style, but when you start acting like you somehow know better then person who actually drew them with their own vision and style in mind thats when its a problem.

I liked lavendertowne's videos but when she made a comment saying she didn't know the point of Alastor's ears and she couldn't see that he resembled a deer or a wendigo made me mad like GURLLLL it's right there! Although props to her for admitting her mistake and apologizing for not doing much research. Her redesign of Angel Dust is so bland because he looks like just some dude. She removed all his sexual elements which takes away a lot of his character as a p0rn star

The fact she not only rushed the video but mistook fanart for official art is baffling considering the show has been out for a few months. She had plenty of time to watch it in full, and that would've absolutely helped her in redesigning the characters. Like I'm not going to act like Vivzie's designs are 100% perfect but she clearly tries to be clear with what her inspirations for her character designs are and her silhouettes are distinct. There's more I can say about Vivzie's designs, good and mediocre, but I hope my point is clear.

That video was definitely one that was more for business purposes than actual inspiration. She probably wasnt a huge fan of the show to begin with but saw it was getting traction so decided to make a quick video to draw people to her channel, only for it to backfire. While she should have done a bit more research before jumping into making that video, i cant really blame her for trying to make a quick buck off of something that’s trendy. Content creators, especially art ones, need to always jump on new trends or their channels will die. And tbf, she is a full time youtuber and comic creator, so watching the show might not exactly fit into her schedule.

Angel looks like a Gacha fem boy, Vaggie is just a generic human, Niffty looks like an opposite version, instead of looking cute on the outside being being deranged on the inside, she looks deranged but is actually a sweetie on the inside, and Alastor lost his personality to the Ink Machine. The only one that looks good is Charlie. She retains her personality and I like the addition of the horn crown, that’s clever

I think what especially sucks about this whole thing is that redesigning characters from popular shows for fun is not new and the only reason this is such an upset is because of how controversial Hazbin and Vivzie are in general. I definitely think something was up behind the scenes on lavenders video just cuz this is the furthest thing from normal from her and her content in general, I’m glad she’s taking the time to handle this with grace and I look forward to her follow up video

One of the main issues with the redesign trend (aside from the fact that it gets labelled "FiXiNg") is that in an effort to tone down the more overbloated aspects of Viv's designs, some artists wind up going the opposite extreme and essentially basic-bitch-ifying them for lack of better word. It's sacrificing visual appeal for the sake of making the designs less convoluted when these two things should be able to coexist.

At 1:23, im SOOO glad you brought up the characters blending in with the background! I remember watching the show when it first aired thinking that something just felt...off? Like its too flat(in a sense where there really isnt any depth)? Then I realized, like you point out, the background needs to be darkened with additional shadows. Its one of the reasons why the pilot is more visually appealing to me. 😬🙌

I do have to admit that I was very disappointed in her designs (no hate of course) I was extremely surprised because it didn't really feel like her style? The color palette in Hazbin Hotel being repetitive does bother me but if I were to redesign characters I'd stick to their themeing and just attempt to use various shades or just experimenting with various color pallets. Although, I don't draw. I do coloring, inking, and calligraphy so I don't think I have the right to talk about redesigning or redrawing characters to be more appealing to certain people. You shouldnt watch LovesArt123 then, she has this weird high and mighty tone when shes talking about the show, she’s even redesigned most of the Hellaverse and basically ripped out what Viv and her team made and replaced them with generic and baldy proportioned with bad color schemes, she also claims that she’s “fixing” Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss, I was subscribed to her for a while but i unsubscribed because of how she was talking so much shit about the designs and the shows

I watched the video and she spent most of the time pointing out(not bashing) some of the very reasonable flaws( everyone has the same colour palette, same body type etc) and made a quick rough drawing at the end there was not a bit of snark or rude comment at all, She had to take down the video due to toxic HH fans but unfortunately that caused a snowball of miscommunication. She is a professional artist,she apolized, watched the full show, researched lore and already has a new video out with much better drawing and really cool lore details too. So pls for the love check it out before you decide to bash her

One time I saw someone who dedicated their entire channel to “fixing” hazbin hotel, and the first video I saw was their Charlie redesign and they made her look like a Minecraft nether mob with like 8 different colors (which is not good, for character designs you should usually stick to 5 colors, 3 primary big colors all over them, and 2 colors for little details and contrast)

This is kinda her thing. She redesigns characters all the time. I think people took this way too personally and just lumped her in with all the haters when she was really just doing her usual thing. There was some valid criticisms and thankfully LavenderTowne is pretty unproblematic and took it well. I'm excited to see her new redesigns after watching the series.

These designs just make me sad. It’s okay to redesign stuff but when you don’t love the show and put that same care and energy in your designs, then it doesn’t work. None of these designs work except maybe Charlie’s? Though idk the pigtails don’t exactly work. Like there is nothing wrong with her style or anything like that, but for a show being about hell, these wouldn’t even qualify for that, except Nifty but she doesn’t even seem like she would be the peppy energetic pipsqueak she usually is. Alastor looks like he got transported into Bendy and the ink machine, only even the ink demon would deny this guy. Went from being an actual threat to uh this. I love LavenderTowne as a person but yeah… these redesigns she did were pretty bad. With Vivzie’s designs you definitely get a feel for each character’s personality whereas with Lavendar…. You get nothing. I can’t get a feel for what her versions are supposed to be about. Given that she hasn’t seen the show, it makes sense that she wouldn’t add that extra personality since she wouldn’t know what to add.

I swear you people are delusional. YOU are black washing alastor. He's a mixed Creole, there's MANY type of mixed Carole and they don't stop at black skin. His dad is Caucasian, his demon form has a beige skin color and he's from New Orleans, Louisiana and speak some broken creole French. Before the show the most popular Alastor design is drawn to be a white man and viv even drew this design of him before, making it the closest to canon. He IS most likely to be white as human.

Something that is really bothering me about these comments is people commenting on Vaggie’s weight. Though, I agree with Adam making them specifically for his tastes… very good point, love it! The part that runs me the wrong way is saying that she can’t be “chubbier” which, in my opinion, she’s not even that chubby??? She’s just got a different body type.. But, even then, y’all do realize… that you can have more fat and still be in shape. You can still be athletic and have hella muscles… like. It’s insane to me that people are trying to say she wouldn’t have any fat simply because she’s a soldier. When that just. Doesn’t seem right to me.
