This was NOT the only silent film version of Sleepy Hollow that was produced. There were at least 2 other silent films of The Headless Horseman but no copies of those have survived or been found to date. The Will Rogers movie is THE ONLY silent film version of Sleepy Hollow known to still exist. The sole surviving copy (that we know of) was discovered in the 1990s in a film vault or someone's collection. The quality will never be better than this. We're lucky it's THIS good in spite of not having special care/preservation. Before the end, though, two of the titles were cropped off or deteriorated. One of them had text about Ichabod becoming a lawyer or small claims judge that was cut off. Likewise, there was more about the Headless Horseman AFTER the housewives that's illegible or trimmed out. Oh well! There's no enough interest in this film to restore it... You'd need another copy of it or someone with cash to spend to do that! And, yes, this is a NOT "repeat-viewing" movie. It has ponderous pacing. The 1949 Disney animated mini-feature of Sleepy Hollow has better pacing and is a more accurate adaptation of the original short story than this 1992 movie OR the Tim Burton 1999 Sleepy Hollow. NONE of the film versions of Sleepy Hollow are 100% true to the original short story -- the 1999 Tim Burton film bears title resemblance but that's about it(!) -- but the Disney version holds up better than most and bucks the Disney trend of "over-Disneyfying" adaptations of existing storylines. SPOILERS, STOP READING HERE OR READ ON AT YOUR RISK! \ The 1999 Legend of Sleepy Hollow adaptation that first aired on Hallmark Channel is pretty good, too. That one stars Brent Carver as Ichabod Crane. It's more accurate than the Disney version in showing you who Crane was; Ichabod wasn't just a food moocher and the Disney film only briefly touched on the fact that Ichabod was interested in the Van Tassel fortune. The Hallmark film is not altogether sympathetic to Ichabod but is more real than films that just show Brom Bones as a bully without good reasons. Brom really wasn't a bully but a man who felt threatened by a better-educated man. He thought Crane would take Katrina away from him and that's why he behaved as he did. Katrina was better-educated than Brom and unlike him could read and write. Crane was a bit of a doofus and someone who felt he was smarter than he actually was. Depending on your interpretation, Katrina either used Ichabod to get Brom to be more serious and NOT take her for granted (Disney version), or she was put off by Ichabod's attitude and turned him down as a suitor (Hallmark movie, the original Washington Irving short story).

I own and have watched literally hundreds if silent films and it have to say this is one of the most boring films I have ever seen. The film runs 76 minutes but its feels like ten hours because NOTHING happens. I'm glad the film survives but its isn't with a second viewing.

The part where the townspeople were about to tar and feather him... that's when I would have left town, if I'd been him. What a weird addition to the story.
