I don't mean to disparage Ed Begley, Jr.'s acting creds but when Ichabod said that he had a nervous disposition it struck me that the perfect person for this part would have been Don Knotts. With his nervous persona and his bulging eyes, this would have been comic gold as well as very creepy. Charles Durning is very effective at his narration abilities and inciting fear in poor Ichabod.

I remember I got this on VHS when I was a kid around 1999 or 2000. I was too young at the time to watch the Tim Burton version, so I watched this. This has a fairytale atmosphere that I find to be quite charming. It evokes images of Washington Irving writing beside a fire. It’s nice to revisit old memories.

The version my great grandmother told me doesn't end this way. Instead it's a loop where Ichibad crane runs away from the jerk who's pretending to be the headless horseman and ichibads head gets knocked clear off by a low branch and in a frazzle he picks up his own head and rides away. The moral is that we create our own monsters and should be careful what we make up lest it become true. I still love Shelley Duvall but I don't think this is the original version
@BigMike2112
@BigMike2112 11 ай бұрын
Well it’s not the original version… it’s a dramatic retelling/reimagined version for TV and neither is the version you’re great grandmother told you by your telling…..read the original version written by Washington Irving in 1820. There’s no tree branch….the story has been told many different ways over the years… I’m sure your GGs version was just fine especially how she added a moral….but the original ends differently…

@Caffeine_Club
@Caffeine_Club Жыл бұрын
Yeah, they changed the ending from the novella. It was never confirmed that it was Brom, and Ichabod's fate is unclear. His hat and a smashed pumpkin are found at the end of the bridge. He's never seen in the area again (did Brom actually kill him? The real horseman kill him?). There are rumors that Ichabod is alive several counties away, but never confirmed. A very ambiguous ending.

@nativevirginian8344

It’s not ambiguous at all. Brom decided to finally get rid of Crane, dressed up like the Horseman, & chased Crane & threw a pumpkin at him. He played on Crane’s naive & superstitious nature to scare him away. I don’t like how they changed the ending here, but it’s still my favorite version.@@Caffeine_Club

@@antoniogirgenti9738 Actually it is Crane that was the jerk. In the real story Crane only wanted to marry Katrina to inherit her father's wealth. He didn't actually care about her. Brom did love her and did not care about the money. He knew Crane was trying to use her. He is the hero of the story.

I was 15 in 1985 and NEVER heard of any of these. And trust me, I watched A LOT OF TV! And only had ABC, CBS, NBC, UHF & PBS so which of those was this on? We didn't get cable until 1986 but my grandparents had it and my dad and stepmom had it by '85. The info provided for this channel doesn't mention a Network the show aired on.
