I’m in the first stages of decluttering and am always thrilled when I fill a trash bag and get rid of it - I think of it as “wow, my house is losing weight!”

I just pulled out 11 fitted queen size sheets with spent elastic from my closet. I kept telling myself I would repair these sheets but i do not have a working sewing machine and I have been saying this for 10 years. Finally, I donated the sheets to a local animal shelter who uses the sheets to wrap around dog beds. I have not looked back and look forward to going through my comforters and donating some as well.

As a Random act to realize my progress and feel and see the difference - I weigh the items before they leave the house - or if not able to weigh them by the box and or bags, I keep a mental count and sometimes guesstimate the weight based on the container size. This has been a Huge help to me. I literally have a TaNgiBLE figure to attach the items that are ‘weighing’ me down. Literally and figuratively. I feel and See the actual weight lifted!!

Dawn! This video is literally an answer to the prayer I said last night. I have been working and working on minimizing because you have truly inspired me and my life is changing. Last night i hit a wall because the stuff is piling up and i just dont want to take the jump to donate it. I am holding onto the “value” and the possibility of selling it. However I hate selling it! Anyways last night i felt defeated and I started searching your videos for this video! I couldnt find it because you hadnt posted it yet! So I prayed that you would talk about this. I see it as a true miracle. I NEEDED this!! Thank you for listening to God and answering my prayers. You will never know how big of an impact you have had on my life. I feel like we are friends.

Elizabeth, let me encourage you to please take that stuff and donate it TODAY! It might be easy, and you will feel immediately better, lighter. Or it might be hard and you might feel regretful. But let me remind you that those feelings are from the enemy-if you’ve popped it into a box or bag, donate it! Bless someone else! Soon, the feeling of having a lighter, cleaner space will be enough encouragement to keep decluttering, I promise. 💚

Elizabeth - I feel that unless you have a lot of valuable stuff & really could use the mone, don’t hassle with selling it - people will expect to get it for next to nothing anyway - I like to donate to the church down the street - they have 3 or 4 rummage sales a year & sell things cheap to the community & use whatever money they do get for good causes - blessings to you

Dawn- I have often thought why info I like this channel so much and I think the reason your channel is so different from so many others is because, 1) I still feel like you are talking to us and with us and are not simply cranking out videos just to put them out. That you are really working through the process with us 2) and this is a big one for me: you really take the time to explain the thinking behind the process. Every family and situation is different so if you only show us what you do then we are at a bit of a loss because our situation is different. But with your channel I can think through the process and then apply it to my situation 3) You are a mother with a family! And you have indeed done an excellent job not making minimalism weird or unnatural. So many thanks!!! I have found your channel one of the, if not the most, helpful. Thank you from ~ Perth Australia 🇦🇺 Katie

Apparently my mom and sister have been watching these and just now told me about them! All 3 of us have the Sentimental Packrat Syndrome.. We've lived in our wonderful house for 3 years now, and still have things sitting in boxes because of my mental clutter. I am SO excited and encouraged by your videos! I've already been gearing toward wanting to minimalize so your channel has come into my life at the perfect time! Plus, we thought we were moving but haven't yet, so, many of our things have been packed up sitting in the dining room. If we have gone almost a year without it, we obviously don't really need it. I can't wait to move forward with this. I play your videos in the background as I work! Thank you and God bless 💜

Congratulations on 100K! You have inspired me more than you can know. I work at home and had my office in the dining room, open to the rest of the house. After my mom's death three months ago, we finally went through her room, got it painted and cleaned, and now I have a beautiful office (with a door!). That caused shifts in every other room on the ground floor, and everything is so fresh and new. A clean slate everywhere I look! Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I have been working on periodic dejunking for the past 20 years. I started hearing little bits about minimal living here and there, but nothing very informative. Then about 3 months ago KZbin recommended your house tour in my feed and I started watching it. My husband was sitting next to me (I normally don’t watch KZbin on my phone when my husband is in the same room, haha) and after a minute he asked me to restart it so we could watch it together. It started a conversation with him and in my head that I couldn’t let go of. Within a week I started my biggest purge I have ever undertaken. I’m not done. I feel I have so much left to do still that sometimes it feels overwhelming. But my house is so much easier to keep clean. And with 10 kids all at home still that is a huge victory for me! I have binge watched your videos from the beginning while I have worked on my projects to help keep me motivated and to help answer my questions. It’s been amazing to me how often the video I was watching would help me through the hurdles I was facing that day. Thank you for doing this channel. I have tried watching other minimalist videos on KZbin and I have to say they don’t help and inspire me like yours do. Maybe part of it is that I feel like I’m a messy and unorganized person, so I’m doing it for the same reasons you did. lol! Whatever the reason I’m so grateful I found your channel. Thank you again!

I have been watching your videos for weeks/months now. I want to say “thank you” for everything, but mostly your honesty. You have put words to thoughts I’ve had about decluttering our house. Hearing about your experiences with “minimalism” and your tips inspired me to go farther and simplify our home too. Recently my husband has said our house has improved significantly, and he asked who you were. I asked “why, do you have a thank you to send?” He said, “yes, exactly” 😊 So from both of us and our four small kiddos, a thousand thank-you s for sharing your work! …and I love your twin sister sharing the support of simple living in the bible as well. It really brings it home for me. I can’t thank you enough.

I love your honesty about getting away from the kids and not wanting to think about the sheets. That's so totally my life, too! I think sometimes you make decluttering look easy because you tackle such big jobs (like an entire basement). I still have to go one drawer at a time sometimes, rather than thinking about the whole room. It's gotten easier, for sure, but sometimes it's still not easy. Congrats on 100k - you absolutely deserve it!!

Hello Dawn, I just recently got on the Minimal ban wagon, and it so happened that I found your videos just when we were preparing to move ( downsize). What I can share in this short time for those that are struggling is this is not a fad its a new mentality and way of living. We need to think minimal and make it an everyday thought process as we navigate through our home. Also break it down in sections. I loved starting with the closet, then the kitchen, ete. Its really liberating. What's more this isn't just the being minimal at home. its relearning how we shop... Controlling our shopping and being mindful. I'm simply fascinated by this movement. Alicia, Miami, Florida. BTW if we are not mindful we can jump off the ban wagon, 😆. I love your videos. Guys I look forward to comments on how other ppl are handling this phenomena.

I have a crazy decluttering issue that I had to overcome. I have been working on decluttering regularly for a while but when I would do a closet or anything I would make a trash, keep, donate to family, donate to friend, donate to hospital or office (magazines and puzzles) and donate to goodwill bags. I found that I did not have the time then to get the donations out to everyone timely so the piles would lay in corner stressing me so much. Finally had a talk with myself that my reason for decluttering was peace not anxiety. I have now started to give everything away to easiest location all at one time. My reasoning became my peace and once I had made decision to let something go it was no longer mine so it could go to one place and a higher power could find a way to get it to next owner. Decluttering for me had to stop being about taking on others individual needs (maybe selfish) rather the main reason which was a simple calm space and more peace of mind. I now do not even call friends and family and tell them to come get things in next 24 hours if they want them. However, if a friend or family member is at my house and comments they like something I have I quietly think do I need that item and if not give it to them on the spot. This takes away the quilt from my previous decision. Mind games against yourself can take all forms. P,S. Congratulations on 100,000 you deserve it so much.

Dawn, you have helped me so much with my decluttering journey. I hear your voice asking, "When did you last use this? When do you plan on using it?" Those two simple questions keep me going. Just when I think I am finished, I find more to donate. I am doing this in small bites and have been dropping a box or two off to the local charity shop each week. I also remember being a young mom with little money and being thrilled to find snow pants for my little guy for 50 cents. It helps to remember that our discards can make a difference in another person's like. Thank you for inspiring me!

My biggest hangup is sentimental items. I’m a sentimental person to begin with, but I feel like because I lost a parent when I was a child, I tend to want to hold on to the items that belonged to them even more because it makes me feel like I can connect with them more. Baby clothing is another hangup for me, I get so sentimental about them, but I obviously cannot keep every piece of baby clothing they ever wore. I’m working on detaching myself from these things, but it definitely isn’t easy. Also, you are so sweet, and it’s nice to see your genuine excitement over hitting 100k. Congratulations! That is a wonderful accomplishment!

I just had Five of my grandkids staying with me and things could get pretty crazy in my house to say the least. However, I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to clean up at nite because I have simplified so much! So worth it! Happy 100k Dawn!!

You shouldn’t be surprised in the least bit! You are amazing people and are my favorite channel here on KZbin! You and Tom are 2 of my best friends...you just don’t know it yet 😂 Ok...That sounded creepier than it was supposed to...🤦🏻‍♀️ Point is...you have been such a big help and inspiration to so many of us and you have built an amazing community here and you have a lot to be proud of. You make it look so effortless! Your authenticity on your videos really shines through and that is what I love so much about you guys. Thank you for sharing and coming back week after week!

Thank you for all your work on these videos. You and your sister are inspiring. My mom was prone to hoarding and I have been cursed with her logic about possessions. She passed away 2 years ago and Dad passed away last year. Almost all of their stuff ended up moving over to my house. I am drowning in boxes and bags and possessions. My minimalist 15 year old is helping me work items out of the house while my 11 year old and husband are fighting the change.

Glas cutting boards are terrible for your knifes anyways, they will get dull immediately so it is totally useless. We have 2 pair of sheets because I try to avoid using the dryer because it damages the fabric and it costs a lot in electricity so I dry the sheets outside on the washing line. Thank you for the ongoing motivation!

Love & thanks from Buffalo, NY , Dawn ! Imo, yours is by far the BEST decluttering channel out there ! And I’ve watched plenty of great 1s. I just moved ! And to a smaller place. I was at my previous, larger apt for 6 years... Even tho I’ve been pretty good about purging stuff all along ( & esp whenever I’ve moved, which has been six x’s since 1996, & plenty of x’s before that .... I’m 60 & now have 2 adult kids), I def had a good amount to purge while preparing to move ! Plenty for garbage, recycle & donation! And then after i moved ? Well i have 2 medium bags & 1 smallish box to take to donation today ! I still have too much stuff ! Books & CDs ( & even old cassettes !) - plus papers - are my major culprits. Oh & sentimental stuff ! I did an okay paper purge recently after watching your video . ( & I’d done a good amt B4 my move). I still have a crate of folders to do soon, that I have to get ruthless about ! My problem is that I like to archive, & I’m a bit of an “information junkie”. I have a studious side that collects kinda esoteric info ( history etc) . Ugh ! But I need to remind myself that my home is not a library ! Anyway ... I’m happy with my progress ! Annnnd isn't it weird how once we’ve adjusted to the “post purge” , we forget all we’ve done, & feel as if we’ve done almost nothing ? Strange ! I’m glad you brought that up in a different video ! Good reminder, to prevent from being discouraged ! For whatever reason, I don’t take “before” photos. But that’s good : less digital clutter ! Anyway , thank you so much for encouraging me along this journey ! Liz

Congratulations! This decluttering is hard work and can be emotional too. Started this a year ago, hit a wall. Then in May we decided to get the house ready to list. We/I purged, decluttered so much! Boxed up and took a lot to storage. However, now the house is SO PEACEFUL like you said! Once we move we are downsizing and I can not imagine all the things in storage will have a home. So.... I am sure we will be decluttering again. :) Thank you for inspiring me.

Ha! I was already planning on doing a second sweep through my basement because, to be honest, I KNOW there are things we could still stand to part with. Something specifically that I am thinking of are two red twin down comforters I bought for a travel trailer we do not even own any more. But they were nearly new, hardly used and "we might need them some day", blah, blah, blah... Haven't used them in YEARS. So... they are going in the "out" pile tomorrow for someone else to use/enjoy. Thank you for your continued encouragement and motivation!

Hello, Dawn. Over the last 40 years of marriage, my husband has been in full time or part time ministry as a church pastor. Moving several times has certainly helped us declutter. At the last move, we did remove MUCH stuff for donations. For the last several months, we have been living in a graciously loaned residence as we wait for where we may be moving next. Half of our possssions are literally still packed in boxes in closets and basements, mostly breakble well art, photos, special dishes, as I certainly did not want to unpack only to reback. We are living with only what we regularly use at this point in time. Yes, it does make cleaning easier. I will be interested to see what happens when we get settled and begin to unpack those boxes:) .....what goes and what stays! I enjoy your videos so much. They have given me great ideas and much food for thought. Congrats on this new milestone.

Dawn(also my sisters name) I recently found your channel and really love you and Diana(best friends name) must be a sign. I am 65 and so I am probably not your average viewer but what you say and the way you explain the mental aspect of the attachment to things resonated with me. So I recently purged my kitchen. The haul that went out was huge! But it feels so good, I can breathe again! After Christmas I am getting in a spare room that gets used to store all the extra stuff. I’m looking forward to more room to breathe. Thank you! Keep up the good work, Robin from NC

you are my new inspiration, I always watch your videos, then pray, then start moving and doing decluttering around home, some decisions are so hard to do, in this economy that everything is expensive to buy, we like to hold on to things we have, but then it getting chaotic. Many things were gifted ot me that are expensive but not my style, and do not bring joy to me. you make me set my mind on the positive and od as you command, I truly love all you post, and thank you for helping people and caring for others , you are the best, God Bless you sister. Thank you.

Dawn, I have watched a lot of YT cleaning, organizing etc videos in the past 7 years since my son was born. Trying to juggle being a mom, wife and working outside the home is hard. Your channel is such a blessing to me, as I’m sure it is to the other 100K subscribers. Thank you for the time and effort you put into sharing your journey and knowledge with us! 🌻

I picked up a few small very thin cutting "boards" at a yard sale a few years ago. One goes in my little cooler to cut an apple sometimes. Recently, I was packing to go on a picnic with some friends. The thought came to me that I might need it. A friend sitting across from me at the picnic table needed to cut up something in her lunch. I pulled out the knife and cutting board from my small cooler. She mentioned to her husband that they should check the Dollar store for one. She was surprised I said she could have that one. I do have 5 more. They hardly take up any space (all fit in a folder on a cookbook shelf).

Congratulations on 100K! I'm really glad you mentioned it because I wasn't subscribed and thought I was! Thinking back to the very very 1st steps in this journey (before I knew about all of this), we were moving out of state and our only option was to a smaller home. The 1st challenge was all the kids games, activities, and workbooks (I was obsessed!) and I said I would only take what could fit in ONE box for the games, and pared down 1/2 of the paper activities. I felt it was a bit of a crash course start for me out of necessity. Now I got rid of more games, and activity books can fit on a shelf two years later. I've been thankful for every step and tool I have learned through you (especially with my children's clothing and kitchen) and others here on KZbin.

I have had so many things in my home after my grandmother died and then my mother in law died so almost all of her things came to my home. There are still so many things in my basement that we still need to give away. One positive thing came out of having a pest control spray at our home. I had to take everything out of my kitchen cabinets and drawers. I didn’t want to put everything back. We donated the extra set of dishes in my cabinet and I’m so glad we did! I definitely have to keep up on the dishes but this is a cabinet with see through doors and it looks so much better!

I've been enjoying your channel the last couple weeks. My husband read the book by Joshua Becker a couple of years ago and now as I am packing our home in preparation to move I've been listening to your channel and some from Joshua Becker. We have a family of 7 and live in a small home so in preparing the home for sell we really need to become minimalists. Its really helped me make packing decisions watching your channel. Thanks!

So glad I discovered your channel (a recommendation from a decluttering FB group). So true about white sheets. I share your frustration about not donating something in perfect/really good condition quickly. I recently went through my hope chest and found all the precious baby outfits I saved from my boys (now 25 and 21!). Because I had not stored them properly, they were in poor condition. . Had I stored them properly or donated them they would have been useful to my future grandchildren or someone else’s children. As it is I just created trash. 😥. Proper storage IS important. Great channel.

I just recently moved into an RV and I wondered how do I exist without all my STUFF? Your tips, directions and perky attitude has made this transition much easier! I went from happily married 5 bedroom, 2 story to divorced and a 2 bedroom apartment and now to an RV. It was sooo hard to donate some of my prized possessions. But I bit the bullet and did it. Thank You!

You are adorable. Thank you so much for sharing!!! I love the idea that if you've had something so long that you forgot you had it, do you really need it? I recently donated several things out of my apartment and my storage locker (like my garage, but I don't have one...) and was SO HAPPY to let them go! I didn't know I was going to live in this apartment for 10 years when I moved in, and this one thing (love seat with sleeper twin bed inside) has been in storage all that time! Obviously I don't need it. It went to someone I know who actually did need it. They were grateful, and so was I!! Keep making these videos, Dawn!! Love you!

I found your channel about a month ago. And it has genuinely changed my life. I work full time with 3 kids and my house was always chaos. I’ve started decluttering and simplifying my belongings and it’s already made my life so much easier. My husband says I’m less stressed and seem happier. I’ve still a long way to go, but it feels great to be on the road to a happier life. My children have actually started going through their stuff on their own accord and decluttering, as they said they like the rest of the house with less stuff so want that in their rooms. Really wish I had found you before when my children were younger. Thank you.
