I actually think Cassius could make a really interesting anti-hero. Angry at the system that took him away from his family and then proceed to experiment on him, a child. Working to get revenge on it while making sure it never happens to another meta-human child. I would read the crap out of that.

You could totally put him on a super-team like the Titans or the Outsiders (as a stand-in for Metamorpho) and do an issue where he goes to Arkham to try and break his parents out... maybe try to set up a life for them with embezzled resources, only for it to fall apart when Preston's illness starts kicking in again.

Personally, since Cassius doesn't really have much of a personality developed aside from just wanting to have their family back, any future stories they have can pretty much do anything. Anyway, my idea is, since Batman just lost track of Cass, perhaps just have them pop up again by chance. People in Gotham start disappearing in mysterious circumstances, many of them parents of kids. It's soon revealed that Cassius has been kidnapping parents, and has been hiding them in their lair of some sort. Their telepathy has grown to the point that they can basically give illusions now, and they use that and their innate shapeshifting abilities to kidnap families to make them their own. You see, apparently Arkham was keeping them stable enough, grounded enough to a specific sense of self. But out on the streets, with the ability to not only change what they look like, but to see into the minds of others, Cassius slowly disappears into just this mass of clay that turns into whatever, with no sense of identity or personality. Except for one key part: their longing for a family. Which caused it to, well, kidnap families and act like they're the child of said families. But when they see how "wrong" said family feels, they dump them and make them into claythings to find other families to take. In the end, Batman ofc beats Cass, but seeing Cass' reasoning, and seeing as once the claythings were cured, the people inside were ultimately unhurt, he decides to right a wrong Batman has done. Not his Batman exactly, Azrael-Batman, but since Bruce never did follow up on Cass afterwards, which caused them to go through this whole spiral of crime. So he decides to help Cass rehabilitate. And seeing how it would be hard to integrate Cass into civilian society, and seeing as how they're pretty young still, he decides to send them into a well-known group of young misfits, The Teen Titans. So yeah, basically, now we have two good Clayfaces, Basil Karlo (depending on the time), and Cass. And I'm thinking, to fit in with the Titans, they take on a pretty generic androgynous look. Still brown and clay-like, but as non-descript as possible. And as they find an identity of their own, their appearance slowly changes to be who they want to be.

I think a good story would be Karlo taking Cassius under his muddy wings and fostering his powers to their maximum extend with the intention of ultimately absorbing him to become more powerful and his parents trying to prevent that. Would be a nice callback to the Mud Pack.

I had no idea Cassius has such a compelling backstory. I think it would be interesting if he were a legacy villain. It sucks he fell through the cracks like that, but stuff like that does happen, and it would make a lot sense for him to become villainous.

This would be a great story to reintroduce as a "What if ...?" comic, because I would love to know what would have been different if Bruce had been Batman during Cassius's debut. Would he have helped the other Clayfaces? Would he have adopted Cassius as a new Robin?

I would love to see Cassius' agender/genderfluid/genderqueer nature explored. I would also love a story involving all of DC's Cassie characters. Cassius Clay, Cassandra Cain, Cassie Sandsmark. Cissie King-jones can be there too because her and Cassie S. bonded over how similar their names are. Please let me know of any other DC "Cassie"s.

Ali's original name was for a bigname abolitionist and northern General or Colonel (IIRC In one of the state militias rather than the main Union army, military organization was a headache back then_) Which makes it funny the two people he named himself after were both slaveowners.

I read the comic with the intro for Cassius when it first came out. I didn't get it, but now I do. Thanks. It is tragic for the kid. Just being experimented on some being an infant. Seeing his mindset being that of an adult, but time didn't really progress (comic book time), Cassius lost whatever childhood he could have had. No wonder he became a villain. They made him this way.

Knightfall/quest was what got me into reading and collecting comics, so it owes me a small fortune! I remember those Clayface issues particularly as they really escalated the idea that Jean-Paul was not quite right in the head. (Trained as an assassin from birth through subliminal brainwashing- who could have guessed he'd be a bit loopy?!) Not at all sure of your accent for Azrael though. Pretty sure the only thing French about him was his name. Not certain about that but can't be arsed pulling out the issues from storage to find out either.

I would love to see a more antihero style where he does right but most people want to use him for his powers. Could have a stable relationship with his parents but would be difficult with others trying to harm them. Batman could be a friend or a decant ally that tries to help but ultimately can't always get in the way. Too many ideas. Too much potential not to be used especially if you use commentary.

Cassius Clay was also the name of an abolitionist politician who was active at the time of the American civil war. Ali's father was named after the politician, and Ali was named after his father.

If they ever did anything with Sandra’s ability to mimic people’s powers, the fact her kids have the potential to inherit those powers (independent from the forms they were originally attached to) could actually become a really interesting internal family conflict. The more forms she took, the more effective Sandra was as an anti-hero, the more powerful & potentially unstable her future children would be. Even if she and Preston got a happy ending, once they know what happened to Cassius, could they ever risk having another child again? What if Cassius was trying to reconnect with them, only to find out they were trying to have another kid? That could be a really horrible moment for Cass, since their own powers lead to one of the worst childhoods they could have had (seriously, not just being a living experiment, imprisoned & dehumanized, but also having telepathy to know exactly what everyone around you thought of your true form? No wonder they’d take on a default human shape as a defense mechanism, just to get *SOME* level of empathy,) the idea of inflicting that on someone else would probably be horrifying! Not to mention the jealousy angle; the unfairness of seeing someone else get the childhood Cassius should have had, someone with all the same “problems” that lead to Cass’s imprisonment… no matter how much they loved their sibling, that sort of thing *HURTS*. Hurts worse for knowing the person you feel jealous towards doesn’t deserve any of that bitterness, hasn’t done anything to hurt you, and in this case might even really look up to & admire you. The potential for a second child, even after reunions & rebuilding, could tear this family apart. Which I think would be really fascinating to see the struggle of.

I have always hated the use of children in peril as a trope. If there is something crucial to the point of a tale which necessitates the depiction of children in emotional terror, and that point benefits humanity, then I will deal with the anxiety it peaks within me. However, if I am just having my heart strings played, then I have more important things to take care of. I blame the movie Willow. So many children in danger in that film, it scarred me for life.
