Fun fact: My nickname among my motorcycling buddies is "Crash." Which is interesting because one of them has crashed far more often than I have. He actually crashed six times in one year on the same bike. Me, I crashed four times in thirty years and two of those weren't my fault! (I got rear-ended once, and caught up in a crash someone else caused another time.)

Yeah it kinda did. The early comics never explain WHY The Devil changed Johnny into Ghost Rider other than "because he's a big meanie". The comics eventually gave an explanation but I don't remember what it was. But the movie from the start doubles down on the Western theme and states that the Rider is Hell's Bounty Hunter commanded to drag escaped evil souls back to hell (seems breakouts are a regular thing in Hell). The second movie goes further and states that if there's no escapee around when Blaze transforms the Rider will just torment the most evil person it can get its hands on. The O.G. comics never made half as much sense as the movies. Make of that what you will.

Now later on they do fix his origins or rewrite them in the comics. His mother abandoned him with his father, who was a stuntman. Then Johnny was involved with a cult in the circus which messed around with demons and the devil. It's a darker background and makes a lot more sense.

So, I read the Ghost Rider origin about 12 years ago, andit made me think: "Wow, the movie's version being pretty super condensed actually seems better than original..." I can't believe I uttered it. Though, I am glad in future renditions clarifed it, like if you sell your soul for others then yourself, you get supernatural powers, that's how it works!

The Nicolas Cage ‘Ghost Rider’ films are worth it, just for the exquisite hairpiece he wears. Also, casting Peter Fonda (who played Mephisto), in a movie about a character who rides a motorcycle, was a nice little touch. It also featured Sam Elliott, and that man can do no wrong, in my eyes. Plus, Eva Mendes played Roxanne, and I’ve had a crush on her since she had a minor role in the Will Smith music video for ‘Miami’. “Welcome to Miami Bienvenidos a Miami” Ah, I miss the 90’s! And yes; I’m both old enough (I was 14 when that song came out), and pathetic enough, that I remember who was in a Will Smith music video from 1998... ...form an orderly queue, ladies haha.

LOL Yes, I remember as a kid the phrase "cycle jocks". Motorcycles were big in pop culture in the 70s and if I remember correctly, the riding enthusiasts wanted to separate themselves from the motorcycle clubs. Plus, stunt riding was big in the 70s, which of course is a more athletic style of riding. A lot of trucking culture and CB radio in the 70s too... I digress.

*Spirits of Vengeance: Rise of the Midnight Sons* is my favorite Ghost Rider tale, and it was definitely a passing of the baton type tale (from Blaze to Ketch, of course). I know a lot of people have a difficult time with the horror/occult stuff Marvel did in the 90s but to me it's no more or less definitive than the original 70s stuff, it just adds to the allure of that genre. Apart from the few Marvel Master Works collections I've found Ghost Rider to be collected rather poorly, only being able to find random collections by chance. I'm hoping more people will want to rediscover the origins and early tales now because of videos like this one, and then Marvel will see a demand for better collected editions.

Yeah, I was reading comics when, and remember the premier of Ghost Rider, and the term "cycle-jock" was used, though maybe not "common." (I didn't start riding motorcycles till '76, and rode till I promised my mum I wouldn't, shortly before she passed. Probably saved my life. But I respect my son's riding.) I love GR, but I think he has the same problem a lot of characters do. They don't age, but instead, as time goes on, they get more powerful, they get more connected to everything else, there are more "surprises" in their life that changes their characters (often not for the better), and their threats get bigger. (Batman started off solving crimes and criminals, and now faces unbeatable villains, massive criminal organizations (that widely operated before he knew about them,) world destroying threats, and really, who doesn't know his secret ID at this point?) (Please excuse my rant.) As always, honestly and sincerely, for all your efforts, your observations, you being you, and of course your video, thank you so very, very much.

After the first movie, my brother really got into Ghost Rider and started collecting the comics. I used to read them too and they were pretty good. It was around the time when Johnny had escaped from Hell, accidentally releasing Lucifer into 666 pieces scattered over Earth. We kept collecting up until that epic battle against that angel (I forget his name) who took over Heavan, when it was revealed there were Ghost Riders all over the world and that they were actually angels, not demons. The last thing I remember is that they had to try to protect the Antichrist so they could defeat this big bad angel, but the our local newsagent stopped getting it in. I still have fond memories of those days.

Thing is yeah, GR made complete sense in the 70's...it combined Roger Corman B-Movie biker flix, Occult movies, and real life daredevils like Evil Knievel with an undeniable cool visual. I think the mistake the Nic Cage movie made was in trying to make it a family friendly superhero movie...they should have made it a straight cheesy horror film.

GR’s whole origin feels like a writer took a deck of character traits and bits of backstory cards, gave them a good shuffle and tried to deal out a decent character. I am wondering if the different creators didn’t come up with a few notes each and try to shove them together like a fruitcake meatloaf casserole. I might be the only one, but this seems like the most random origin story I have ever heard of.

I read almost all of the Marvel supernatural comics as a kid growing up in the 70s and you're spot on with your observations about a lot of the things I never noticed back then (dating his "sister", absusive family, his interest in satan coming out of no where). Naturally I found this episode interesting and great! I love that you find a lot of the second tier characters fun to read and I can't wait to see who you decide to do next. Some suggestions: Howard the Duck, Scarlet Witch and Vision, Dazzler (I'm sure there was a lot of subtext and absurdity with these characters that went over my head at the time)

As for the flaming skull concept ... there was a character called the Blazing Skull from back in the Golden Age. Roy Thomas used him in an Avengers comic that came out in March of 1972. The Ghost Rider also appeared in 1972, but wasn't published until August. So I don't know the timeline used in the court case, but if you went by publication, Roy Thomas certainly was aware of a hero with a flaming skull, and it was characteristic of Thomas to honor the Golden Age by including them in modern comics, IIRC. I guess I should add that I'd read the Avengers comic before the Ghost Rider one, and I assumed it was a situation where Thomas was trying to give an old character new life. I kinda thought he might do the same with the other characters that appeared in that scene in Avengers, but it didn't happen. I think I even remember them a bit, after all this time. One was something like an "Angel," one was the Fin, and the Patriot, and the Golden Age version of the Vision (who was green). I'm going to clap myself on the back for remembering that, but I probably should have used those neurons for something more important. ;)

That comic book code change was due to a technicality. Marv Wolfman was a writer at DC and wrote House of Secrets #3 which stated the story was told by a "wondering Wolfman". But the CCA had a rule that said you couldn't have wolfmen in the comics. Thus the controversy. The editors appealed and the CAA said it was okay if it's stated that Wolfman was one of the creators, leading to all the creators getting credits for their stories. That was 1970.

The best issue of Ghost Rider is #70 - Freaks! If you read this issue and compare it to the 1932 movie Freaks, you will be amazed not only with the artwork and well constructed plot, but also the realism of the sideshow experience. Great video!!! I find it hard to believe anyone had the moxy to claim they "created" a flaming skull and then go forward with two lawsuits. I feel certain flaming skulls were common decor on motorcycle club jackets and vests of the era, from which inspiration for a motorcycle comic book was drawn. It's almost like claiming you "created" the look of Dazzler while standing next to Gene Simmons and the rest of the fully painted KIZZ band.

Regarding the fiery skull - there was a Golden Age Marvel (Timely) superhero called the Blazing Skull who also had a head that was a fiery skull. So, it was far from an original idea. Roy Thomas was always a big fan of the old Golden Age heroes. So, it seems more likely that he remembered the Blazing Skull (at least sub-consciously) and suggested using a similar appearance for Ghost Rider. It does make for a very striking image. As to Marvel's push for occult themes in the early 70's - the one that stands out in my mind from that period is Daimon Hellstrom, the Son of Satan. It is pretty wild that in a few short years Marvel went from avoiding the occult altogether to featuring a comic book with the title of "Son of Satan." Even back then then it was considered a controversial character. Now you have to keep in mind that back in those days issues of comic books were being sold in places like corner drug stores. I still remember as a kid the shock of seeing a comic book on display with the name of "Son of Satan" in bright, bold letters depicting a character on the cover looking just like the Devil - complete with hellfire, pitchfork, and an inverted pentacle on his naked chest! And this was located in the aisle in between the "Get Well Soon" cards and the stationary!

i know "scooter trash" was a thing in the seventies and 80's. i always loved the style of his bike. if you look back at the stylings of 60'S AND 70'S chopper style motorcycle's, they did a lot of that kind of seat style, and that double squared headlights, ape hanger bars and upswept exhaust pipes. are you gonna do the ghostrider reboot? ride on little sister! :)

My first issue was #34 that you showed the cover of at the beginning - The Demon Within. I was hooked. GR was and still is my favourite at Marvel - WHEN DONE WELL. Since then I have read all the issues and appearances, and collected most of the original run, and enjoy the slow change of the character. First he is shown as a human with a skull-like head (that's on fire) but with eyes, not just eye sockets, and is Johnny Blaze. Seriously, we see his head morph into the skull-shape - it's not his skull. One panel in Champions shows him being raked across his back, and you see his human flesh underneath the leathers (which always seem to be self-repairing off-panel with no sign of stitches. Seriously, those things should be in tatters well before the end of the run). Then it changed to pure skeleton under the leathers that supernaturally make the leathers look as though they are over a well-built fully-fleshed body. Then Johnny started becoming more aggressive when he was the Ghost Rider. Then the eyes started to fade away. Then the personality of the Ghost Rider as a separate entity started to emerge and Johnny found himself at odds with it. Then the revelation that the Ghost Rider was Zarathos, imprisoned in Johnny's body and partly held in check by Johnny's subconcious. And somewhere along the way, the writers/artists just gave up trying to convince the readers that his leather jump suit was black, not blue.

Okay, so I am very late to your party apparently. But you are hysterical. I just found your channel as it showed up in my feed probably because I watch other comic book nerd channels like Midnight's Edge and nerdrotic , but I am so happy I found you. Sasha you are great. Those voices and those accents as you read the pages, OMG. You literally cracked me up. And yes I was collecting at the time, and I remember buying this book. I pretty much bought everything that Marvel and DC put out at the time. Until right now I just did not realize how silly the dialogue was. I still love the character, and that Nicholas Cage movie (both of them actually.) I did really like what they did with him in Marvel's Agents of Shield a couple of Seasons back. You have definitely earned yourself a new subscriber! Seriously love your deadpan delivery fabulous

My first experience of the Blaze Ghost Rider was a reprint of issue 68. Obviously meant as a jump on point, it has Blaze seeking shelter from a storm in a church. He tells the priest his origin story in the confessional. At one point he tells the priest that he feels guilty because sometimes he actually wants to let the Ghost Rider out to punish people..... I loved this issue. It good origin recap, nice twist, chilling ending. If only they were all like this! Now if you'll excuse me, for some reason I want to look up some art from "Ghost Rider/Blaze: Spirits of Vengeance"

I've read the entire volume and I think that of those 81 issues, with the 15 or 20 most important stories you are fine. The 'must read' run is the Jason Aaron one.

Ghost Rider🔥🔥 Good stuff. I liked what they did with Blaze for Midnight Sons. Loved the art on the run Tex did on the 2nd series. Hearts of Darkness was an awesome team up with Wolvie and The Punisher. He was in an Xmen comic where he's possessed by the Brood😲. Would like to see more of the new version. With the car.

Don’t know if you like punk rock, but if you do; Rollins Band covered a song called Ghost Rider that’s a favorite of mine. They did a couple of different versions but they did a slower shorter version which appears on “The Crow” movie soundtrack. Originally is was done by an industrial synth band called Suicide. If you like country; Johnny Cash does a bad ass cover of the old country western song (Ghost) Riders in the sky.

Hey cool, a Freakazoid shirt. Now you can use it as a jumping-off point to talk about Madman and whether or not WB stole the idea for Freak from that. And after that it's a simple digression into the realm of Allred's Mormon comics.

To be fair, I was reading comics at the time and I read this one too but it felt OK because tbh most of the origin stories then felt pretty rushed and silly when looking back on them but at the time it felt mysterious and full of pathos compared to some of them. All these origins were done in 1 issue, from the FF to Spiderman to The Hulk and there was little time for introspection or finer details, so this felt on par to me. Plus, to the 10 yo me it really seemed deep and angsty for as much as I could feel that. I definitely had not sarcastic comments or follow up questions, it was just another (kinda) dramatic origin story. Love the show!!!
